Why does everyone like Dark Confidant so much? I can already think of one card that does the same thing, for what seems to be a smaller life cost: Phyrexian Arena. Is it the body or the 1 less mana?
It's both. It beats and it draws you an extra card each turn starting from turn 3, maybe turn 2 if you drop a Diamond/Petal. That's ridiculous tempo. The life cost is negligible in the decks it is run in, which have very little costing more than 2.
You also can't easily dispatch Phyrexian Arena when you no longer need its effect. Bob is easy to get rid of if you want to.
In eternal formats, there's very little removal floating around, which means this little guy is not only making card advantage continually, but also taking 2 life points a turn....which makes Bob better than Arena by miles.

Phyrexian Arena is a decent alternative if you're running a slower, higher mana-curve deck.
But for decks that with a low mana curve, Dark Confidant is just formidable. It's excellent card advantage with a efficient body built-int. Sure, the body might be both a blessing and a curse, but it's much more a blessing than a curse.

I rolled 5 D6's and got 3 fours. They must have changed the odds of getting a 4!
He's card advantage out the wazoo that also beats for 2. You can get rid of him with relative ease if you need to. In the decks he's run in, you shouldn't ever take more than 2-3 life from any one card. Heck, in Legacy you can just run him with Sensei's Divining Top and negate the life loss altogether.

This.
In relation, certain Zoo decks run Bob... the highest casting cost in that deck is likely going to be 3. Obviously you would *never* run something like Emrakul in your deck along side with Bob due to it's bad synergy in such decks.

Hence, most Eva decks don't run him, because they pack Tombstalker.

Being able to hit for 2 is really relevent, holding jitte is also good.
Abuse with top or low curve can even make the drawback LESS than that of arena.
