I can honestly say that I typically don't even see the ads anymore. I really mean that; I just glance over them and it may not even register that they are there. That being said, I'm obviously not glad to see it, ESPECIALLY because the ads on gatherer could be much more focused: everybody searching is a Magic player. :/
Wow, indeed. It looks ugly now - even more reason not to use it.
Well, now I get to check out Free Accommodation on Mana Island. Woohoo.
LOL. The ads are so inappropriate.
Thoughts, anyone?
Wizards has its right to do whatever it wants with its site, but Google Ads shocks me; I never expected that Wizards would stoop (perhaps?) to such depths.
Funny how all these giant corporations appear to have tonnes of money yet in reality turns out they're closer than ever to bankruptcy...especially if they start using Google Ads. While I'm not specialist at PPC (pay-per-click) I do know that Google Ads is a relatively small margin of income for the larger type businesses. It's kind of pointless really.
Unless they negotiated a big fat sum to acquire for each person who clicks on an ad, I doubt it will generate a worthwhile amount for them. Unless MaRo needs more money for his genetic clone project to work fully and Garfield and his Hasbro cronies® are dangling their carrots in his face.
Still, pretty ugly feature for a very (supposedly) professional database which receives thousands of hits every day.

It seems like a waste of money. but then again if the site is getting thousands of hits a day, then maybe it can be a positive source of income since you only need a percentage of those people to click the ads.
That being said, it does look out of place. but since we do not need to use it, then there is no big deal. just ignore the ads or use another search engine.

I am looking for Date Stamped promos from Khans of Tarkir block so I can finish my set. Check my wants if you have any.
Currently offering 2 non-foil Kolighan's Command for a Date Stamped foil!
I used to use gatherer most often, and switch to magiccards.info when I needed a better search engine, just out of ease getting there. Now the two switch places. It's amazing what huge corporations will do to make even more money.
Edit - Just saw the new magiccards.info and I'm muchly impressed. Looks like I would've made the switch even without those ridiculous ads.

My anecdotal evidence disagrees with yours! EXPLAIN THAT!
I know wizards can do what ever they want to with the site, but the google ads make it seem well, like a web search engine instead. :/ oh well, I guess if Crystal keep is ever updated and he wants to do it, then I'll switch back there.
I really don't get why people are bothered at all. The ads are unobtrusive, they don't blink or move around, and might make Wizzos some extra cash so they can keep, you know, making Magic cards.
NoScript and/or AdBlock FTW, I s'pose. I use magiccards.info as well, but I looked to see these ads and can't see them with FireFox.
AdBlock is what blocked it for me. Turned it off and refreshed just to see where they were placed. Have to say it's not that bad looking when you first arrive but sticking the ads between the input boxes and the results just looks horrible. It is a sign they're losing some serious money with Gatherer tho. Or at least that's what it looks like on the outside. I mean, why else would they do that (besides greed, of course)?

Why do people eat breakfast? (Besides hunger, of course.)
They're a corporation. They're required to attempt to maximize value for their shareholders. So they stuck a few tiny ads on their web page. If you want to call that "greed," implying that they're selling out or something, I guess you can. But it doesn't seem very accurate to me.
My biggest problem with the ads is that they make Magic's autocard feature's window far too large. It used to be a manageable size like the magiccards.info one is today, but now it's nearly large enough to almost completely cover the fullscreen browser window on a 1024x768 screen (taller, but not as wide). Very annoying.

Now they have moved them below the search box but above your search results.
Who do we complain to at Wizards about this?
As others have suggested, you should get an adblocker for your browser. I had no idea there were any ads on the Gatherer search page because I've never seen them, and there is no space between search box and results for me, either.

They make my gathering experience a whole lot less 'gather-y' and a whole lot more 'ew'.
I don't like this.
