I want a foil Rafiq with original art (it would be hard to top Michael Komarck unless it was by two of my favourite artists Rebecca Guay or Kev Walker) to make up for his not being the foil for Knights vs. Dragons.

Like KvD needed another card tipping the scales in favor of Knights...
Guys, these are From the Vault, not From the Teller Drawer. Rafiq is way too new. Look at WHEN the cards in the previous 3 FTVs were first printed. They are pretty old. Teferi is actually the most recent card they have printed in these sets outside of the preview cards I think... My guess = No Rafiq.
I'm hoping for Jhoira or Jaya. Someone has to rep for the lady-legends! It's unfortunate that Jhoira is too busted in EDH, because she was my favorite card in TSP block. I guess they won't do multiple TSP cards though
I'm hopeful that we can get 2 Portal 3 Kingdoms legends in this the fact that the announcement states-
For some cards, it is their first time with a black border.
hopefully indicating more than one.
If so i'm hoping for both Xiahou Dun, the One-Eyed and Hua Tuo, Honored Physician Xiahou gives the set a nice money card and Hua because 2 high powered P3K legends would probably be pushing it and Hua is good without being crazy in strength or cash value.
On the idea of recent cards other than the preview card being used (like Rafiq) it does seem unlikely based on previous FTV's. Still i'm also hopeful but more for eternal format power cards like Progenitus or Iona, Shield of Emeria than Rafiq. Because if any bant coloured legend was going to be printed it's more likely to be Phelddagrif since it's an EDH favourite for "Group Hug" decks as well as an old school legend which hasn't seen a foil printing.

THIS! I didn't even consider Rafiq. He simply doesn't need new art (none of Michael Komarck's works require an "update"), and I'd love to own a foil version of him. Makes me glad that only 7 are going to be re-done; I can only imagine it would be the older Legends getting revamped art. I won't get my hopes up, but it would be great if he was in there.
Gwendlyn di Corsi with new art would be fantastic; love her flavour. I feel like Dakkon Bladeblade, if he's in this set, deserves the Ray Swanland treatment. His style would fit well.
Think you need to do some more investigation before coming to that conclusion. Unsurprisingly Exiled doesn't contain any recent cards because, to my knowledge, Wizards haven't banned anything new since Affinity but both the other sets have plenty of examples of recent cards (relative to when they were printed) in them.
A lot of the cards had been printed recently, but I was talking about their FIRST printing and excluded preview cards because that wouldn't apply to Rafiq.
I have a sinking feeling that p3k wont ever get reprinted. I have a horsemanship deck and most of the people that I play with refuse to play on account of it being horsemanship
You should port it into a Shadow deck then. Or maybe find some new people to play with.
Seriously though, that's pretty weak.
I'm eager to see what's in this set. I'm itching to build one more EDH deck and Dragons & Relics provided me with twonice shiny generals to build around.

It really would be killer to get a foily Xiahou Dun, the One-Eyed, despite the fact that I already have one and it's more than quintupled in value :o. But a foiled Hua Tuo would rock my socks even more. His ability is great and like you said, he's not overwhelming in power. The other P3K Legends I'd really like to see foiled are Sun Quan, Lord of Wu and/or Lu Xun, Scholar General. I just love aggro Blue creatures.
wasnt lu bu in dynasty warrior? the guy ripped me up soo many times
urrrg, ya lu bu was a monster. I remember getting beat down the better part afternoon, then haveing to go work...at Mcdonalds...*shudder* they wern't all good old days...
but on topic, I was hopeing for a land or two and expected (not hoped) them to throw in Akromas Memorial. (before reading the actually announcment)

If he were reprinted, he'd have new art. Wizards would have to pay royalty fees to print him with that one. I think they'd rather print commanders that are a little more powerful or have a unique ability, though.
Would they? Richard Kane Ferguson has done artwork somewhat recently for WotC so I would assume that meant he agreed to letting WotC keep all profits made on his art and paying a one time fee for his art regardless of the potential profit, or lack of it, that it generates. My point is that RKF would be in a position to refuse the use of his art from Legends since the rules were different back then, but he'd risk WotC never commissioning art from him again. So he is stuck with nothing to gain and plenty to lose if he refuses whatever WotC may offer him in this case, or he could let them do what they want and stand to gain plenty and risk nothing. WotC believes that once they pay for your art, the art belongs to them as does any money they make from it. Whether this is right or wrong, artists are as grateful as most people would be to make a living off something they'd enjoy regardless of how much money they or anyone else makes off their art, even if it somewhat exploitative to profit far more than workers responsible for creating something to profit from. It's easy to accept that you benefit less from your work than your employers if the alternative doesn't benefit you at all except to avoid compromising your principles, which means eventual poverty for all but the privileged.

Reprint Misdirection and Dominate . There, now you can you lose to your own cards instead of being mad at blue.
so, I know this has been up with people speculating for a while, but I just noticed something that struck me as odd. it mentions that " For some cards, it is their first time with a black border. "
What sets had Legends that were never black bordered? The only place I can think of them coming from would be P3K.... I know people were already speculating legends from there... but that kinda says there has to be.

I believe that Chronicles had legends that were white-bordered. It'd be nice to see a few of those gems reprinted with some updated art.
EDIT: I correct myself; all of the Chronicles legends were reprinted in Legends with a black border, so that may be out.

If you had actually read the rest of this thread, you would notice people have been speculating on this exact quote with regards to P3K. A post regarding Xiahou Dun, the One-Eyed was just four posts above yours.

I'm willing to bet that Richard Kane Ferguson doesn't need a royalty check from Wizards to stay in the black. Magic art is freelance in the majority of cases. Art produced prior to 1996 has different copyright rules, which is one reason why reprinted cards almost never use the original art. Time Spiral was a nostalgic exception, and even then the amount of timshifted cards prior to 1996 is outweighed to the amount afterwards.
Wizards has no reason to reuse an old piece of art when they can get a new one from a contemporary artist that's going to look exactly the way they want it to.
