I think everyone is looking too deep into it. Most likely scenario is that there will be 2 lands per guild (that makes 20 lands and lets them make both an island and a mountain that is themed for Izzet, and say a swamp and a mountain for Rakdos).
With the other 5 basic lands they might make a cycle of art that represents Ravnica that can be connected similar to what they did in Lorwyn and Scars of Mirrodin.
It's not clear to me that this necessarily means that there are 5 of each basic land.
Consider -- the question asked Mark Rosewater about card counts, and I don't think that's an area he's strong in. Away from his home turf of design, his answers are often incomplete or even wrong because he honestly doesn't know. It could very well be that there are only 4 basic lands, and then RTR has an additional 5 more cards than GTC for some other reason.
I am all for the theory that there will be 20 "guild related" basic lands and 5 others (may them be full art, panorama, or whatever) but I am then very curious about wich lands will be in Gatecrash ?
I don't believe there will be lands in gatecrash boosters, because it would have been more flavorfull to only have guild related lands corresponding to the guilds that actually are in the set. Therefore, they will use the slot in the boosters for something else. We had night/day cards in Inistrad and checklists to go with them. I feel like it could be the return of that kind of shenanigans.
Checklists are an option, but of course I expect WOTC to have done something "new" (at least in it's form).
So the question that is open to speculation is : "What will wizards do with this booster slot in Gatecrash boosters ?"
umm, in Gatecrash boosters, they'll put a basic land in still. Nothing changes, it's just that these two large sets will share lands, when that's usually not characteristic.

IIW for any CCC (pick the highest one in the list):
A high-costed equipment (I want it big, but make sure it isn't nutso-broken with Stoneforge. So a high equip cost or a benefit for casting or something)
A Squirrel Wizard
A G?? (1-3 colors, including green) legendary creature with its main strat based on not attacking
Since we know that there are exactly five extra /basic/ lands, I've come to the conclusion that there will likely be a new supertype for basics in Ravnia, similar to those for snow-covered lands in Coldsnap.
The easiest answer for why there are five extra basics is that they're showing off Ravnica's beauty with an additional basic...but they don't really need to do that and the panoramas don't seem to be able to support more than four card arts. This idea wouldn't make sense because there's really no reason to do it.
They could make guild-themed lands, but again, we've already seen the art for the basics and they don't resonate with specific guilds. The lack of inclusion of basics in Gatecrash to have similar basics for the other five guilds adds to the doubt this route should provide speculators.
Lastly, there culd be a new supertype: city.
Lands would be:
Ravnican Forest
Basic City Land - Forest
This best explains why there are exactly five spots in Ravnica but not five in Gatecrash, as basic duals would create. It makes the most sense to me.
This is probably silly, but could someone outline exactly what 'Gatecrash is using the same basic land as Return to Ravnica' actually means?
If you open a Gatecrash booster pack, it will contain a basic land with the Return to Ravnica expansion symbol. This is how lands traditionally worked in past blocks.
Scars of Mirrodin block deviated from this quite heavily because the storyline involved the terrain actually changing. Additionally, large third sets like Avacyn Restored and Rise of the Eldrazi had their own basic lands. Both of them were turning points in the story of their blocks and were drafted alone.
Guys, the people suggesting there is the new color purple which stands for city where right. I just opened this in a pack of M13. I really want to know which attributes will be assigned to city and what their ally colors will be...
Yay!

It's amazing what comes in M13 boosters nowadays- I should open a few.

Hahaha, I hope this city/purple color sticks around for the future of Magic! And while they're at it, they should go through all the old sets and add new purple cards or update cards to purple!

What inspires these card creation posts? Do people really think that their poorly designed cards are going to solicite admiration and cries of "genius"? Or humour?
Using is not the same as "be put in the boosters".
My question is not a proof of some sort, it is just that there were no basics in Dark Ascension, but I don't remember if they put INN lands in those boosters or if it was all checklists, advertisment and tokens...
If they are not using the basic land slot in Gatecrash for Gatecrash lands, there is good reason to suspect they could use it for something else entirely different.
I guess OP wants it to be 'keyworded' like "dies" was. What word would you replace ETB with though?
When Aegis Angel is born?
When Huntmaster of the Fells arrives?
When Kitchen Sphinx lands?
When Faerie Imposter busts in?
When Dread Cacodemon pops in?
When Malfegor shows up?

so full of fail it's hilarious.. not only is that Pink instead of purple, but adding a sixth color (unlike snow, or colorless in the respect of eldrazi) would likely piss off alot of the playerbase, (not that they care about the playerbase anyways)
Also, that's totally MSE, because that set symbol is garbage.

I'm afraid of the answer, but did you... took the guy's post as anything other than a joke?
Uhh, if it's not purple, then how did my girlfriend's cousin's aunt who works at Wizards show me the new Jace costing one blue and one purple? And as we all learned in kindergarten, 6x4=25.
Anyway, there have been two sensible suggestions thus far:
1) Guild-flavored lands plus ordinary lands,
2) Full-art basics,
plus I suppose the null hypotheses that
0.1) Ravnica is pretty so they commissioned five per, not four; or
0.2) Maro goofed.
My guess, and I am hoping I am right, because just like EVERY OTHER magic player, we love unique lands. There will be 2 of each basic land with the Build Symbol watermarked on it. Or something to that effect. Since there is 25 land. 2 for Each guild in RTR and 1 without a mark. Something to that effect. Makeing more Chase Land.
I think they learned a lot about sales with Zendikar and there special lands.
Just going out on a limb here, but perhaps there will be four "city" lands and one "non-city"/"pure" land for each basic land type. Maybe the crux of the block is nature vs. the sprawl of the city (Yeva's Forcemage anybody?)

nothing more than a joke, with all the oh look what i pulled from m13 crap that's been going on lately, (aside from the obvious accident that was rootbound defenses, and the fact wotc followed up with it) i cant possibly take any more of these as anything more than a joke..

Since we now have confirmation of 25 basic lands, can we update the spoiler to 28/274? Of course, then everyone will flood in, expecting 5 actual new cards, and be disappointed--better to get that out of the way now, instead of in the thick of the season..

If there are Guild-flavored basics, it will strictly be a matter of artwork. The watermark is just where the giant mana symbol would be, and even if that weren't an issue, players are trained to see guild-watermarked lands as able to produce mana of the associated colors.
I would buy those.

When someone tells you they are going to Hawaii do you ask them when the last time they went to Hawaii was as evidence?
We have MaRo explicitly telling us so.
