I know this was discussed a lot when the shake-up happened. I know it seems to run contrary to Sheldon's wishes. However, I have just heard from a reliable source that there is a good chance of Commander being sanctioned in the nearish future.
So what does everyone think about that outcome? What implications does it have for the format?
N.B. I am NOT saying this is confirmed. Hence the choice of subforum.
I'm down. I think it would open up the flood-gates for players like me who spend time brewing a more competitive deck. I would personally like to see all of the different decks that could be Tier 1 in a real sanctioned tournament.
Edit: Also, I think Shahrazad would have to be banned :'(
Put any sort of benefit to it- prize, points, etc... you'll pretty much force the destruction of the multiplayer format- get a few friends together, and you've thrown away the integrity of the whole event.
You basically turn the entire format into 1v1, which makes so many generals, archetypes and cards that would see value that they don't in any other format completely worthless again.
This disenfranchises the already existing and growing playerbase, for what gain?
If you look over the number of sites dedicated to it, you can see it's the minority that's calling for sanctioning of the format. Considering the steps they've been taking, the releases they plan to make, I'm pretty sure that Wizards does get the spirit of the format.
They've stated several times that it will never become a sanctioned format. They're coming out with products for it, and that's enough. Make it a real format and the casual fun goes out the window. Also, I think games would last way to long for it to be sanctioned. Every game would come down to the clock.
I don't really see the point of it being sanctioned. It's better than Standard, but that's about the lowest bar for a format to jump over right about now.
I suppose you could run it as an alternative to FNM or something for prizes.
In the article on the mothership they were VERY careful to state that they didn't want to interfere with or sanction the format. Your source is most likely wrong.
When the released the change switching it over to commander, wotc had stated the were not planning on taking it over. I would assume this means DCI or otherwards.
I want this. I want this so bad. And I hope they make a 1v1 format, not only because that's what I primarily play, but because I want to relish in the tears of Sheldon Menery and all the casual players that see him as their god.
I'm not so worried about it getting sanctioned. If it does, it's a lot harder to be competitive in the Commander format than say, T2 is. Netdecking and keeping a library of staples will be far more expensive than other formats based on sheer deck size.
Of course, we all know Commander is so fun because of the welcoming nature for casual and multiplayer games. The lack of social politics in a duel make for a less enticing game IMO. Plus, banned cards are nothing to look forward to

Lol, Like this post ^^.
Sanctioned can mean many things. It can mean multiplayer archenemy type of tournaments, or they can allow tournaments to sanction their 1v1 edh tournaments. Both are fine with me. People just gotta stop whining.
I'd like to point out that you can sanction casual non-rated "multiplayer EDH" events through WER as of now. I haven't tried it but I think you just submit a player list for use in determining the number of unique players that play at your store.
To be honest, the idea isn't all that bad. I don't want to see prices of cards go up any farther, but I also don't like the idea of sheldon and his crew of people decide what is too broken for the format. Sharazad is legal but kokusho isn't? There are cards on the banlist that don't neeed tp be there and cards that need to be there aren't. I don't want to see a crapload of cards banned as a result of sanctioning, but if they take over the format then they will continue to print new product for it. This could turn out to be a great thing in the long run. I just don't want there to be a year or two of hem-hawing and Brett Favre like flip-flopping over it. Realisticly the decision will be made after the release of theit 30.00 precon edh wedge decks with 3 generals in june. If they sell well, they will want to jump on the edh money train. Simple as that. Money talks. And those things are going to fly off the shelves. I've allready got a karador deck. Just waiting on that set to hit so I have a real one.......
I am crossing my fingers that they do this for 1v1 Commander with an established ban-list that doesn't vary based on what a couple different casual communities think makes sense.
WotC should migrate 'Commander' to a sanctioned 1v1 format and leave the multi-player as 'EDH'. I mean, none of the hardcore multiplayer people even call it Commander anyways.
Why do I say this? At Nationals we had a big EDH tournament for a nice price (FTV Relics, which had just come out). We had 30+ players and 4 man pods. Time limit was 2 hours for each round, and they expected to go late into the night. First round was finished by ALL PODS in a half hour. The entire tournament was completed by the time that 2 hour limit would have been called.
Expect faster decks, Turn 3-4 quick kill combos, and a lot of whiners and table politics. Doesn't sound like much fun to me.
You don't NEED expensive cards and to netdeck to win this format. There are tons of Turn 3-4 kills done with commons, uncommons, and JUNK rares.
You don't need expensive cards, but there certainly are decks that benefit from them. If Wizards sanctions Commander, but doesn't break the reserved policy and reprint the duals, it would absolutely ruin Legacy and Vintage, as the cost barrier would raise even higher for those formats.
Also, as I do not enjoy EDH whatsoever, I think this would be the worst thing to happen to Magic ever.
I don't know if I'd even play magic outside of Cube if this happened, staples would sky rocket and everyone would just end up playing the same 5-6 generals since they are head and shoulders above the rest in power level. Not to mention having the DCI regulate the banned list and having an actual banned list (Current one is just recommended) would likely mean more banning and less flexibility when playing. Not to mention it can't be a FFA multiplayer format since that would be way too easily gamed by groups of people. Honestly Wizards said they'll support the format but leave it alone and I think that is the best policy for the format.

But whomever your commander is, Cabal Coffers is really in charge.
as for the winner the could use the points sytem for a winner if they do sanctioned also as for gens I don't think 3 or 4 gen will get teh most stuff I think with the right deck and time any gen could win the game or win by points.

Let's say they sanction Commander, and so what? Any sanctioned format needs big tournaments for support, like Grand Prix, otherwise this sanctioning will have little to no effect. Since I don't think a Commander GP is possible, the only think you get is small rated tournaments(and this is done now just by registering it as "legacy").
The only way they could make it work is if they made it less about winning then the other formats.
It's supposed to be multi-player and it's supposed to be for fun. unless the tournament structure somehow took that into account, it would ruin the format.

I just can't see them doing it, considering how big a deal they made about not taking control in the December 2nd press release http://www.wizards.com/magic/magazine/article.aspx?x=mtg/daily/feature/119k , it would be pretty ridiculous for them to do a complete about-face just over a month later.
You could see a new kind of "casual sanctioning".
