Its been a few months since the fervor over overextended died down a bit, but I'm still excited to see if its going to happen. In the meantime, does anyone know if there has been any confirmation/denial of Overextended officially? Or if there have been any more subtle hints dropped?
The only way I'd ever get into competitive magic is if my cards didn't become obsolete and if it were a sustainable format (ie no reserve list cards), so basically, I'm waiting patiently for Overextended.
Any thoughts/news?
EDIT: Overextended as I remember was a new eternal format that was being discussed a ton a few months ago. Basically it would include cards from Masques Block up (7th ed and up for core sets), so it has the benefit of cutting out all the more broken sets, allows Wizards to reprint old cards to keep the format alive (unlike Legacy, which has cards on the reserve list), and doesn't rotate out.

I'm not sure I understand. How exactly do you expect this Overextended format to work? All sets newer than a specific, unchanging starting block? The only way for your cards to never become obsolete is if the format never rotates but only grows, and my impression has been that when people talk about an "Overextended" format is they're expecting a rotating format that's simply larger than Extended (like the last 8 years instead of 4).

If memory serves, the rumors we got were about an new Non-rotating format. I think some people were saying Mercadian Masques block and up.
Overextended or "New Legacy" was rumored to be Mercadian Masques and newer. This would make the format easier for newer players to get into and would also be friendly to collectors, keeping card prices up. Instead of shock lands dropping in value dramatically due to having no format they really fit into, they would retain their value as the only true dual lands in a "New Legacy" format.
The original news that started the fervor though was a rumor that Masques and newer would be a new format.
ah, I guess I must have either heard talk about something different, or different people have different expectations for what "Overextended" means. Pay no mind to me then.
The point of starting a new eternal format would be to deal with the reprint issue. As Wotc has confirmed the reserve list is a final nail in the coffin for cards like Black Lotus, the cardboard currently in existence will eventually all be destroyed, or at least enough to make it prohibitively expensive to get into Legacy/Vintage. Anything post MM can see reprint though, so it is the logical new beginning.
There has been no news of confirmation or denial and likely will not be until after Scars releases as that is when Extended completes its huge change.

This—everything from _______ forward—is exactly what'd been rumored as a companion change to the shortening of the Extended rotation window to 4 years. It locks the sets impacted by the Reserved List out and allows Wizards the theoretical ability to reprint any card within the format at any time. It'd be like a ... Modern Vintage.

Meh, I'd be surprised if that format saw the light of day, considering they could've done that with Extended in the first place.
I'd rather they just ban the original dual lands from Legacy and make that damn format more accessible.

i'm pretty sure, though i cannot find it anymore, that a person from wizards spoiled the idea of the format being Masques and on.
