Im not sure why people are shocked about the random choice of planeswalkers and the 'story' thrown together so it makes sense.
Look at Koth v Venser. Both Mirran, but wanted to do it THEIR way. So they have to fight about it.

At least I've thought Tibalt is the type of planeswalker to absolutely irritate everyone who even merely splashes white or blue. (Seriously, what sort of semi-random pain-inflicting mage wouldn't?) Guess he ticked off Sorin that day.
(Yeah, that means Nicol Bolas would be the sort of guy who just can't stand Tibalt...)
I guess this is so baffling because... doesn't everyone just freaking hate tibalt? He's so crappy. Or does he test market well or something stupid like that? I don't get it.
Tamiyo also wouldn't have made ANY sense. Honestly, I actually REALLY like the idea of this, even if the match up seems random, it actually makes a lot of sense. Sorin is a protector of Innistrad humans, and Tibalt likes to torture and kill people, and as a planeswalker has enough power to swing a conflict like this. Not to mention, it kind of helps paint a picture of who Tibalt is, other than being some dude with a crappy plus one who is a devil and stands at a crater thing. That art with him holding the dagger like that is really, really, cool too. If it sheds light on an otherwise random ass character, I think it could be pretty cool...
No wonder they took their time with IvsG. With that duel deck, they provided us with a quality product with good spoiler cards, good reprints, and an overall exciting product. This...there are few words to how letdown half this match up is. Tibalt is arguably one of the worst planeswalker ever made. It will be Sorin versus a 59 card red pile. I will look forward to the good cards they do include (or attempt to include) and the reprints that get new art and new frames (to be honest, that's one of the most exciting aspects of these decks).

Do people really not like Tibalt that much as a character? I can understand being disappointed because his card is bad, but its not like Jace vs Chandra had a red deck with a good planeswalker.
So I'm picturing Vampires vs Demons/Devils... could be interesting... I'm still getting this just cause even if it sucks ass.. mainly for the new art cards
I'm not sure why people think that just because Tibalt's card isn't all that powerful, his deck must suck. There is one Tibalt and 59 other cards, there's a lot of room to make a deck that's fun to use and has synergy with Tibalt if you do happen to draw him. Madness seems very likely, and mechanics that use cards in the graveyard like flashback and unearth. Cards like Punishing Fire that return from the graveyard to your hand are natural inclusions. Plus more hand-punishing effects like Sudden Impact, and probably some Howling Mine effects for acceleration. That all sounds like the foundation for a potentially fun deck, to me.

Sorin is my favourite walker and all that jazz, but even taking that into consideration I don't have a deck for Sorin 2.0 - and definitely don't need another Sorin 1.0. And not many people like Tibalt... which is probably an understatement.
Although I totally see Vexing Devil added just for extra trollfactor (this thing just begs to trollface plastered on). On another side of conflict - maybe Lingering Souls?
On totally random note, when hubby woke me up with question "New planeswalkers' duel deck is announced! Guess which one?" and I answered with most unlikely couple I could think of - Tamiyo vs. Karn - I wasn't that far in randomness of conflict. Honestly, why not Sorin vs. Nissa which seemed to be the most popular guess.
Edit: wait. B/W deck from recent ones, Sorin standing alone while there is bunch of devils around Tibalt... Exalted for Sorin?

People really hate random abilities (Unless the random hits your opponent), and with good reason. Chandra Naalar is bad, but she's at least fun in casual and maybe EDH. Tibalt is horrible. Even when you design a deck around his + ability, you still have a deck that works better replacing him.
His character is pretty nice, his art is great, his card design is awful.

I think part of it is that the cards Wizards features on the front... are the cards they feature on the front. They're kinda supposed to be flagship cards, and when the flagship card blows...
I don't think anyone's really gone after Tibalt's deck, though. Of course we don't know the deck, so we don't know how good it is etc. However, we know that Tibalt so far has tanked.
I'm not getting why people are saying this is a "random" pairing. They're both native to Innistrad. Last we saw them, they were both on Innistrad. They have clashing personalities. They have opposing goals. If the two of them did meet on Innistrad (not unlikely) they would definitely not get along, and would likely end up fighting one another.

A simple Otherworld Atlas is both flavorful and synergistic with Tibalt. It also draws your opponent cards. I am very intrigued as to how Wizards will make people play a Tibalt themed deck.:evillol:
Punishing Fire has the added bonus of working well against the life gain that will inevitably be in Sorin's deck if he is Sorin 2.0 (And he really most likely is).

It's more that Tibalt and Sorin had no previous contact in the storyline (There's also a huge mismatch in power). I guess that would put them in the Elspeth vs Tezzeret category, but people didn't care because Elspeth is the second best Planeswalker ever printed.

The wedding is over. Now it's time for the honeymoon.
Tibalt is fun in EDH though...sure the random discard is pretty bad, but do you know how much fun it is to Insurrection with Thraximundar on the field, sacrifice all of your opponent's creatures to a Fallen Angel, and then kill two people in one turn with an overwhelming field presence to fight the third with?
Let me tell you, it feels good. Tibalt's card isn't SUPER fantastic, but I still like this DD.

Anarchist is a good bet, since his ability works with Tibalt's +1 and his flavor is spot-on.
