The format was losing popularity like crazy, pretty desperate move. There simply wasn't a reason for a lot of people to play modern. Maybe this changes things? I can't imagine a modern FNM ever being larger than a standard one. Idk how many stores will make the switch.

Meh I'll go for Knight of the Reliquary over goyf any day. Gets larger than goyf could ever hope to be, and is in colors that can exploit that. Also, Path to Exile.
stop taking the piss. removal's never an argument, plus Knight of the Reliquary and Tarmogoyf just high five and start punching the city together.
if we lived in a world where Tarmogoyf was just a dressed up craw wurm and was secretly a terrible card it wouldn't be pushing $100. oh, and I guess in this fantasy land, JTMS is just a better sensei top.
Take your monoblack deck, then set aside 14 swamps. Add 4 Creeping Tar Pits, 4 Darkslick Shores, 4 Drowned Catacombs, and 2 Jwar isle Refuge and add 4 Jace, the Mindsculptors. Your monoblack deck is instantly better. Better yet, drop those refuges, throw in some islands and some mana leaks, and lo and behold, you're now playing a real deck. Congratulations. Welcome to the world of competitive M:TG.

Knight of the Reliquary is pretty unplayable in modern right now. It's worse than most other 3 drops that see play in every color really (Kitchen Finks, Messenger, Clique, Lingering Souls, Geist)
It's a shame really, it's such a strong card in a vacuum.

Play it in Bant with Moorland Haunt for utility? Combine it with Deathrite Shaman for ramping shananigans?
Since there's no modern scene up here at all I can't really say how it would pan out, I'm just saying there's solid uses for it. Losing Karakas and Maze of Ith hurts, but I'm sure there's some other exploits for it.

It obviously has some applications, there just isn't a reason to use him/his utility over many of the other popular 3 drops. He just doesn't provide immediate value, in a world full of Jund that's just asking for trouble. It's why decks rely on value guys like Finks/Messenger/Lingering Souls or nearly impossible to kill (Geist).
The most likely place I could see him is probably a newer version of Doran with Deathrite Shaman (this card is super good in Modern right now). He also gets splash hate from Shaman being in so many decks now.

Great, as if standard wasn't expensive enough. If this catches on at my LGS it just might convince me to stop playing all together.
Not sure if you can really complain about Standard being expensive if you're playing "5 color best cards in Standard" lol. That means lots of shocklands and expensive cards.
Shocklands are currently in type 2 so not an issue. Early bird lands are not heavily used as filter lands are better (Filters will more than likely be reprinted in the MM set). Fetchlands well.. if you don't need either blue one they aren't to bad. Not sure what the hell caused their insane jump recently.
I wouldn't worry too much. If I recall correctly, Block Constructed and Extended are both FNM-legal formats. Adding Modern to the list of acceptable formats is more of an update than an overhaul.

Dear kbx41,
You have received a warning at MTG Salvation Forums.

Flaming or Other Forms of Misbehavior
Saying that you sometimes wish people (in this case the implication is the staff) would fall down a well and get AIDS is hardly appropriate for the forum.
Got to agree that Tarmagoyf really is a big deal and saying it doesn't belong in mono white decks and elves is a joke.
Then again I just watched GP Chicago where the top 2 decks were Tarmagoyf Jund. Well Spirit Jund is the name since Tarmagoyf is a given.
Turn 1, Nettle Sentinel. Go. Turn 2 Nettle Sentinel and Heritage Druid. Tap all, play Elvish Archdruid. Untap Sentinels, and if I have a staff of Domination in my hand I can play it that turn or the next. Say go, they wrath I play a card that makes my elves indestructible. Turn 3, infinite Mana loop and draw my entire deck and either attack with a single nettle sentinel for infinite damage or play emrakul get a free turn and attack then. Yes, that's really crap. *rolls eyes*

Seems good if it works, but running that play puts you in the line of fire for oh so many sweepers.

true.. but if you got a nutdraw modern elves can go of on turn 2. A smart player will take it easy, playing 1 elf a turn until turn 3/4. My point is, elves if played right with the right cards can and will outperform others. This was my hand this one time: 2 nettle sentinels, heritage druid, elvish archdruid, staff of domination, stomping grounds, and a plain vanilla forest. I drew a mass hysteria and my deck played itself out on turn 2. It can happen.
Unless Wizards seriously address the issues of card prices then Modern FNM will be a joke for a long time at first since it will be pay to win.
With Standard people trade a lot and pay a comparatively small amount of money, so the majority can have all the cards they need. That is simply not the case with modern.
Wizards should not bow down before collectors, they should serve those who actually play the damn game. They should flood the market with Modern Masters. Tarmogoyf and pals should be $15, not $100
Game winning Modern Cards should cost less than game winning standard cards, then?
Anyways, I'l looking forward to modern masters. There's 6 of us here who plays friendly games and we've been trying to recruit others to join in. One person plays a 5 color zoo deck with 12 fetches, 4 goyfs, 4 loam lions, 4 kird apes, 2 geopedes and 2 steppe lynxes. The deck relies on playing things like seal of fires, tarfires, and other interesting things. It's really neat to see it play.
Another guy here plays a vicious storm deck that relies on cloudstone curios. I've even been toying with cloudstone curios and elvish visionary with the nettle sentinels and heritage druids and I'm impressed with it.
Another player uses urzatron.
Another player runs a b/u control deck with bobs...
I own 4 tarms, but I haven't ever really used him. He's just way too limited in use and the ways to get him to be really big is too costly for me to even try and do it. bloody 12 fetches to get 3 lands to have all land types and blasting players for 5 damage a turn with an instant that relies on basic land types. There's another here that plays a b/g dredge deck and goyf does pretty well in that.
And there's even a modern rdw and a modern ww deck. They're murderous, though not so much as ad nauseum can be. ad nauseum chained right can end the game the turn it gets used.
Modern is a fun format with either super fast decks or disruption decks or slow control decks that stalls out the game until they're ready to strike. I of course play combo elves. And my deck is one of the cheaper in the format. 14 lands is all I need. The most expensive cards happening to be 3 chords of callings, emrakul, 4 verdant catacombs and 4 misty rainforest
This is good news for me, as I have abandoned standard for legacy; now I will be able to convert my legacy goblins deck into modern when necessary, and have the best of both formats!
FNM and modern? What a beautiful combination. The fact that it's FNM means that I won't feel bothered using a cute knight or vampire deck as uncompetitive as they may be.
Well I guess the demographics of people that play modern and have the cards/money to competitively go on playing it are 25-35. Those people have jobs and they could play and drink and draft Modern Masters on Friday evenings without so much complaining about its cost as they probably have a regular income.
Makes sense!!!
