i love that vampire and i like skullbriar but if you can kill him with wither or infect he will stay dead forever (unless you move him to hand or library)
-1/-1 counters make Skullbriar sad. If he has one on him, he's stuck with it forever pretty much. Even having a Melira out when you replay him wouldn't stop him from dying I think.
I definitely want the vampire guy for my Teysa, Orzhov Scion deck. Not sure he'd supplant her as the general, but a lot of the things that work with her, also work well with him.
I'm getting the mirror mastery deck, and I'm happy to probably be getting Edric, he's just such a masterfully designed card for multiplayer. Two things though, is this effect in any way green and doesn't this feel like this should have been White Blue and in the Political Puppets deck?
Wow, I love all these cards! I almost want to get the BUG deck just for Skullbriar, that dude is just so fun. I'll be fine with Edric drawing me tons of cards off my token army, though.
I like edric a lot, but all of them are very nice. The incentive for people to attack anyone but you should not be underestimated in multiplayer. So far so good.
I see designs like these and I just have to salute R&D. Flippin' brilliant. I am seriously impressed. I would so love to work as a team on a game someday.
Vish Kal, Blood Arbiter has the same problem as kresh, a big threat that is begging to eat removal. While it can control when it grows, it requires the controller to generate and sacrifice creatures, rather than destroying opponents' creatures. The fact that the "unload" ability is all-or-nothing really makes it unappealing (to me, anyway). Obligatory mention of counters on permanents being unreliable after Hex Parasite.
Skullbriar, the Walking Grave seems like it could be an interesting aggro alternative to Doran the Siege Tower. Shroud and hexproof would be worthwile inclusions given that most bounce and tuck effects are targeted (aside from Evacuation and Hallowed Burial). Similar to Vish Kal, the parasite really hampers this legend's ability.
Where is the love for Edric? Nobody will ever attack you again - If they go after someone else they get cards. And you draw cards for attacking the others? So good.
Skullbriar is awesome too. I have never seen a card that had an ability like the one on the bottom - is that something we've never seen before?

Also thanks to the OP!
I thought the same thing. I have no idea if they will play well, but the design is beautiful!
All of the cards from the Commander deck are extreamly interesting and well balanced, great job Wotc.
Doesn't Skullbriar cause some issues though? Like when it's sent to the graveyard (i mean not as your commander just as an all around good creature), what happens if something dies after it? Doesn't the next thing have to go above it?

Cube. The best way to play Magic. PERIOD. Come over and check it out. Also, check out my Peasant Split Card Cube.
The World of Pokemon RPG has been rebooted. Come over and check it out.
I think there are some serious rules questions and crazy interactions for the walking graveyard.
My question is what would happen to a -1/-1 counter that leaves at end of turn. The walking graveyard is placed in the graveyard or command zone since the creature changed zones will the counter be removed at end of turn.
well, I was waiting to see what the other three enemy generals would be, and I was not disappointed. Edric is what I'll likely be building, but both of the others are more than acceptable.
Where is the love for Edric? Nobody will ever attack you again - If they go after someone else they get cards. And you draw cards for attacking the others? So good.
I know I at least think Edric is Pretty Cool Guy Tier. I think "nobody will ever attack you again" is overdoing it a little.
I really like Vish Kal. He fits perfectly into the sacrifice theme of W/B and he kills opponents creatures to boot. Well designed card.
Edric is my favorite here. It encourages your opponents to go after one another but can also give you an incredible advantage as well.
Skullbriar is....meh. Simply getting one counter every time he hits the opponent doesn't seem all that great, but I suppose he would make a neat voltron general. Its just sad that late in the game, all your hard work with him can go away with a Spin into Myth or buyback'd Capsize. Although I really like his synergy with Graft and Proliferate. Black Sun's Zenith makes him a very sad panda...
About Skullbriar:...what could be used to keep bringing him back from the graveyard?
well, you're in black, so....LOTS of stuff. all the MANY Zombify analogues, creatures like Hell's Caretaker and Doomed Necromancer, etc. etc. seriously. you're playing BG. it shouldn't be too difficult.
-1/-1 counters make Skullbriar sad. If he has one on him, he's stuck with it forever pretty much.
not necessarily. +1/+1 counters and -1/-1 counters cancel each other out, so you'd just need to put a counter on him. granted, if he gets the -1/-1 counter first, it becomes a bit more difficult, but still not impossible (Vigor Mortis, Miraculous Recovery, or having anthem type effects in play would also work to get him back long enough to put a +1/+1 on him).
I know I at least think Edric is Pretty Cool Guy Tier. I think "nobody will ever attack you again" is overdoing it a little.
I agree. I was excited. But he's still like a Propaganda type effect, but in a rewarding way instead of punishing. But, seriously.... What the hell Volkan Baga? That painting doesn't make any sense to me and I am quickly growing tired of your neoclassical rigid figures and the lighting that screams "Hey, I posed in a studio with 3 lights coming at me from 3 directions!" I know they love this guy, but come on! A UG spy master shouldn't look like the uptight reject from the Architects of Will. /rant
I'm quite dissappointed in Vish Kal. Ever since we found out his Cmc i've been seriously hoping he would have a build around that made him cheaper and playable. As much as people may love his flavor of a white/black vampire he still costs SEVEN mana to cast the first time and has no imediate effect. He will see little to no play as a commander and i highly doubt he will see much of any play outside of the command zone.
Edric is pretty interesting indeed. He will (should) eat alot of removal but he can come down during your turn letting you connect with your coiling oracle, wiskful selkie etc net you a card or two and have more of a chance to effect the board before things turn ugly for him.
Skullbriar... now this guy is interesting. I just created a list for Glissa the traitor and now i'm considering building this instead. Well sort of, i really want a zombie tribal deck to mess around with... why could he be B/ or even more awesomely B//. Sigh it appears Necromancer's Covenant will have to be left out of another zombie deck concoction of mine. I think glissa makes for a more potent rock/control general (she has some pretty nasty aggro side to her without require much of a build around as well as an effect that can generate card advantage and resilience). But this guy... he is screaming to be vultron and hyper agressive. His freaking art is so BA its hard to not want to build him!
All in all i'm glad i'll be buying Heavenly Inferno and Devour for Power.... well maybe counter punch as well but i'm still super confident this guy is going to be in devour for power. Nin and basandra just seem so strongly in to be in political puppets and heavenly inferno.
I'm still confused about what card that one giant guy with the armies fighting is for. I guess he's not a legend at all, then? Just a normal creature? Kind of lame.
I would be VERY surprised to see that big guy not be a legend. I mean he's as tall as a frickin Eldrazi and was the preview image for the Commander announcement. While he may not be one of the primary legends in the boxes, we still have a couple more dual-color legends to go through.
I know I at least think Edric is Pretty Cool Guy Tier. I think "nobody will ever attack you again" is overdoing it a little.
Indeed. He is good in that he deters attacks in the shortrun, but letting your opponents draw a ton of cards can backfire too. I like him a lot, probably my favorite of the five, but he's not flawless by a long stretch.
Doesn't Skullbriar cause some issues though? Like when it's sent to the graveyard (i mean not as your commander just as an all around good creature), what happens if something dies after it? Doesn't the next thing have to go above it?
This is my problem with it. Usually it won't matter, but if you're like me and you play with stupid old crap like Corpse Dance or Nether Shadow, Skullbriar here causes complications.
Other than that though they're awesome. Really want to play with the spymaster, that makes for some good multiplayer politics.

I would love to get a -1/-1 counter on an opponent's Skullbriar the first time he plays it
Oh wow, I didn't even realize that implication! I love Edric!
You:
That would be absolutely cruel. I have a friend who's planning on building around it, I should totally do that just once.
I feel skullbriar is made for my Savra deck.
All of this.
Edric, Spymaster of Trest encourages your opponents to attack each other, which is perfect for a multiplayer-focused deck. Works very well with Mind's Eye and Consecrated Sphinx.

They are legal in Vintage and Legacy so not necessarily.
