What would you do now from a financial standpoint? Should I trade away all your Mystics and then rebuy them with the Event decks (50€ for a playset plus good stuff)? I'm 100% sure that I can buy the decks for MSRP at a toy store.
The problem is this idea is almost a hive mind now. You've gotta compete with the other dozens of people selling off their copies now.
Ugh, again... the gaming industry is not some career filled with fatcats and millionaires... Most people in the industry make about as much as your average full time retail worker. Granted, I certainly don't know what WOTC's folks make, but the average for even large table top gaming companies is in the high 20's to low 30's.
Why do you guys think they put out so many of these products? Not because they are grabbing as much cash as they can to fill their swimming pools... it's so they can keep the game alive by having a continuous cash flow coming in. ONE bad set effects the whole year's expectations.
If the industry paid as well as some of you "damn the man" folks really thought, we wouldn't have an industry filled with early 20-somthing nerds who actually care about the product...
Wow thats just 100% made up and wrong... There is no way thats even close to right and im guessing your under 16 and that sounds reasonable to you. Thas so little its almost unlivable.
From just running into people who work for companies i can tell you thats wrong cause no one making 20ishk a year is driving around in a new Benz, Jag, or Lexus.

I apologize for not being "sympathetic" about LGS but they still get a big chunk of my money in form of sleeves, deck boxes, drafts and pre-releases. I got no problem with that. But I avoid them in terms of buying Event Decks/Duel Decks/FTV/etc stuff at all costs because they gouge the LIVING CRAP out of them. Fire+Lightning for 50 dollars, Elspeth v Tezz for 40 bucks, FTV: Relics for 120 when they first came out and for MONTHS afterwards. Hell they still have some of those things on their shelves for that price minus Fire+Lightning.
I don't mind paying a bit over the MSRP like +5 dollars more for just sheer convience and because I like going to my LGS, but when they gouge the crap out of these things it definitely does not put me in a buying mood.

To the people that say that a card needs to be a higher rarity because of Limited... I hate you guys so much. I present to you with this.

Ok, it's been mentioned a few times throughout this thread but I'm curious how many of you have actually seen these at a target or walmart? I've never seen them there.
Wow, I'm still in shock at what I saw. The event decks seem very good, especially the white one. Glad I got rid of my mystics before this. I hope some places will still have this for the MSRP though (seeing as some places tend to sell them a bit higher)
Yeah, I've never seen event decks at Wal-Mart or Target. They seem delegated to the LGS and that's because they are where the people will buy them at.
Random person walks in off the street to check the place out... doesn't have his cards with him and wants to play FNM. Or a kitchen-table player comes in and doesn't have a competitive deck. These are the kinds of players that these decks target.
It's a fine line that the LGS has to walk. They are a weird mix between retail store and the secondary market. I think in the eyes of WotC, the LGS is a retail store and should be selling product at MSRP. I've been told by the proprietor of my LGS that their distributor sets the MSRP, and to make any profit they have to charge a marked up price relative to the WotC listed MSRP... hence the $10-$15 markup on Elspeth v. Tezz. BUT, if I were to be running a shop and got in a shipment of FtV: Relics I doubt that I would sell it at MSRP. I know that if I did that, then I would be selling it to someone that would go and triple their money on it or more. In the end the owner of the shop owns the product in that shop and has the right to sell it at whatever they want to... provided that there aren't stipulations in their contract with WotC or their vendor that prohibit that kind of thing. If that's the case and WotC finds out that a retail store is selling a product above MSRP, then I'm sure they can take action like not selling product to that location any more or something.

Singles sales alone aren't enough to make up the difference
I don't agree with you. I think if the LGS has a good way of keeping up with the singles sales, then they can make quite a bit of money. This means having someone on staff who keeps up with current trends and buys/sells cards actively to keep stock and prices current. My LGS puts the cards from the newest set in the binder at the current price at the time. That price never seems to change. Some cards sit in the binder forever, some sell out. They also sell commons/uncommons at a set price (unless it's a chase card at release.) The point is that I've seen enough places where selling singles is their primary purpose that it has to be a lucrative endeavor.
If opening a game store was the path to making millions, I think more people would be doing it... heck I'm sure most shop owners are happy if they can buy Burger King at the end of the day...
My friend owns a game store. His diet consists of canned chili, ramen, and sandwiches. Every once in a great while he splurges and gets a dollar cheeseburger.

That really doesn't mean anything. I have a rich friend whose diet consists of the same, what does that prove?

I don't want to disclose the amount of money I make per year, but that's basically my diet. I daytrade with my best friend.
I guess what he's trying to say is that someone might need money so they'll sell the new thing at more than it's worth so they can splurge.

Maybe you should do some research before condemning. There was a job posting at Fantasy Flight Games for a senior game designer, offering 30k a year. Maybe the CEO of Wizards can drive around in a Jaguar, but that is definitely the exception. Name one other company that is half as big as Wizards? They own both DnD, the best selling RPG, and Magic, the best selling CCG.
So are people talking about American Wal-Marts or international ones?
Because here in Toronto, Canada they gouge the ☺☺☺☺ out of Magic. 34.95 for a freaking Deck Builders Toolkit or 5.99 for one booster that I have to spend a minute pulling off the damn outer packaging before I get to the actual booster packaging. I can go to my LGS and get the DBT for 20 dollars and a draft set for 10 bucks.
It's all perspective people.

All American Wal-Marts and Targets I've ever been to sell at MSRP. Which right now is 3.99 a pack. 19.99 a Deckbuilders kit and about 34.99 for a fat pack (or are they 39.99 now?)
I've never seen the event decks at Wal-Mart. I'll get a few from my LGS however.
As for money making? it's all perspective. You can make a pretty good living if your living costs are low. 20K isn't a bad job by any means, particularly in this economy right now. We obviously do not know how much money they make per year. Considering how "competitive" their jobs are, I imagine they are paid quite well. I imagine they make a pretty good average income. I'd say in the 30k to 40k range. but that is neither here nor there.
Wizards' has been making great products the last few years. Everyone has been clamoring over the new cards. Pretty much since M2010, all of the sets have been flying off the shelves. There have been a few dud products (Shards Foil Packs ... although I think with any other block but Alara those would have been a great product).

I just want people who redraft to admit this:
"I can't draft objectively unless I am able to guarantee that I receive at least 3 rares. I am also better than most average/new players so I want to make sure that I get the best rares and they end up with worse ones. I care more about the monetary value of cards than actually playing the game for decent prizes."

Actually I am 37, I was once offered a job to do art design for a major table top gaming company, and I had to turn them down because they offered me 10K less a year than my job faxing paperwork for a bank paid me. I had a college degree at the time and plenty of experience even. Heck, I had even done volunteer work for the company for years and they knew the kind of work I could do. When I complained, they said it was "industry standard." Needless to say, the only people at the company that made more than 30K a year had either been there for 10+ years or were part owner.
So while I can't vouch for whatever gaming company folks you've met, the work I've done with people in the industry don't make much money at all, and their spouses were the ones who brought home the bacon.
These decks could have been much more with tiny changes.
It very much feels like the decks - ESPECIALLY the green deck - was intentionally placed at a certain power level, with suboptimal card choices being made to keep it there.
i.e. Overgrown Battlements? in poison aggro? mmmmkay.... I guess to run those putrefaxes into removal that much faster? Heh.

Slingin' cardboard out of Yokohama, Japan. (if you're local and play EDH or want to test competitive, drop me a line!)
I once farted during the final match for prizes at an FNM. It was a tense moment, everything was quiet, control vs control, I was about to mana leak, thought about it.. and farted. Then mana leaked.

No, Battlement is actually good tech. It works with Zenith, and makes sure you always have tons of mana for pump spells.
But the poison deck needs more rares for consistency, sure.

stoneforge is about to rotate out of standard, and with the release of this, they will just become another 5$ rare... sure this is a good buy at first, but I don't think mystics will be worth anywhere near what they are worth now
Sorry Darnovo... I disagree... it's got utility... and I would think people would have learned by now that cards that tutor and goldfish usually end up breaking out to the big time. I guess we should be shocked these were EVER a $5 card (because they were when baneslayer was distracting people...)
