I'm new to Cubing and I normally don't pay any attention to Un- cards, but I was listening to the latest episode of The Third Power and their guest was talking about how the only Un- card in his Cube was Who/What/When/Where/Why.
I love this card and given Cube is a casual format (and given that I already have a ton of split cards in my Cube), I might just add it. What I like most about it is that it's not just a goofy card. It just plays like a normal card... except it's just split 4 times.
What are you thoughts on using Un- cards in Cube?
Do you use any of them in your Cube?
Can you recommend any cards that aren't too goofy?
Blast From the Past is the best designed (and most "real") Un- card, IMO. I would also play City of Ass if I allowed Un- cards in my cube. Those would probably be the only ones, because I wouldn't want to have to play with house erratas, which knocks out Booster Tutor and Gifts Given, which both have to be modified rules-wise to function in the cube. The only other card I'd really consider would be Symbol Status, but I'd probably leave it out.
We have played Blast from the Past and Rare-B-Gone in the past. Both were powerful, but the majority of our group didn't like them after a while, as they felt that the 'joke wore thin' as it were.
8th edition? 8th was nothing but reprints, and Staying Power wasn't even printed yet when 8th came out.
You are correct, I remembered it wrong; it was The Cheese Stands Alone (Unglued), not Staying Power (Unhinged) that Rosewater tried to get into 8th (and which as we know is now Barren Glory).
Have who/what/when/where/why, blast from the past, and city of ass in my 450+ powered.
WWWWW is a great card, particularly in decks that can splash colors off the occasional dual land or signet. All the modes are useful in the right circumstances. But it does lead to funny moments, like the one time my opponent killed himself flipping it on a dark confidant trigger. =)
I've looked through all the suggestions in this thread and I think it's just going to stick with the single Who/What/When/Where/Why. Blast from the Past is interesting and it almost made the cut. But in the end, I think I like the idea of having "only 1 Un card." Maybe it's because they aren't "real" magic cards and when you put too many of them it kind of feels like it's "not a real deck" or something. It becomes a novelty deck. But when there's only one, it's kind of like that hidden gem that you'd never come across during normal Magic. It becomes a pleasant surprise.
Never really put that much thought in the 1/2 mana cards.
Question: Did 1/2 mana used to burn you 1/2 points of life or did they just not care about balancing the Un- cards? Rainbow land that comes into play tapped with no other drawback seems much too powerful.

Blast From The Past, Who/What/When/Where/Why, and Booster Tutor (which is the only Un card in my cube, and a blast to play with)
Symbol Status and Frazzled Editor I've seen in lists too but are a little more goofy than the other three.

I like Tainted Monkey, as it often does rediculous amounts of damage (always choose "the"). A number of other Un-cards are realtively fun.
Biggest problem is this stuff is impossible to get in foil.

No money for Magic at the moment. Still on here for the community.
There are better uses of 3 mana that don't require you to wrestle for the effect.

Well I'm pretty confident I'd win an arm wrestle against anyone in my playgroup. I'd still rather have Call of the Herd though.

(Although Staying Power's rules text DEFINITELY should have been "Until end of turn, "until end of turn" and "this turn" effects don't end.")

Doesn't mean it isn't lulzy

(I might be reading too much into it.)

Personally, I run it alongside Blast from the Past, Who/What/When/Where/Why, Gifts Given, and Booster Tutor.

I use descriptive language. Assume that I'm being nice and respectful. (I'll tell you when I'm not.)

Which can make a 5/5 Etched Oracle if you're into that sort of thing.
How? It still only makes mana of the 5 normal colors.
Say you have Bayou, City of Ass, and an Island, plus Garruk in play;
Bayou -> B
City of Ass -> R + 1/2 R
Island -> U
Activate Garruk to untap City and Bayou
Bayou -> G
City of Ass -> W + 1/2 W
Spend
BGU = 4 mana, but 5 colors. Enjoy your 5/5!
Have RW left over to do whatever.
