So I'm very tempted to add that Octopus, as it almost always will say when this creature attacks, pay eight colorless mana and win the game. Might be a bit too much for a creature without protection, but it looks awesome to play with, and I'm willing to give it a shot I think.
This makes me happy beyond belief. Lorthos? In my cube? It's more likely that you think!
I think Khalni Heart Expedition might me an option for my cube - given that if a game comes to a stalemate (which can often happen) or it gets dropped on turn two it will push the eventuality of deck thinning and mana ramping. I'm getting giddy at what this thing could do in a dedicated ramp deck in green: T1 Land, T2 Land -> Expedition, T3 Land -> Harrow -> Quest Trigger, T4 Six mana. Throw a different ramp effect in for Harrow and it's still a beating. I really like this quest.
Yes. A thousand times yes. They lured me in with Ivory Tower and Zuran Orb, and I kept telling myself "I can quit whenever I want...just look at that untapped disk". That was ten years ago man.....
Yea, I could definitely see the Quest ending up quite good. A more awkward Explosive Veggies for half the mana that can fire off at instant speed has a lot of potential.
He's an 8/8 with no evasion or protection. Compare this to an Akroma or Simic Sky Swallower.
In other reanimator news, the green landfall guy is actually a pretty good target as well.
And to get the most bang for the buck you still need 8 lying around to run through him. For a strong control deck, he can be the finisher that cuts through any defense. For reanimation he's pretty bad. The latter two cards Phantizle mentioned are the posterchildren for reanimator strategies. Lorthos is a very different fatty.

I'm happy to see them pushing lifelink in black. It seems like black in cube has a ton of good stuff that costs you life (as it should) but the lifegain stuff was pretty mediocre (or only good in mono). Now we have a borderline two drop and a quality three drop to offset my bitterblossom/confidant/muse/arena addictions.
Silent Edge's Tidbits of Wisdom: The Lewis Theory - When the presence of a single card makes every other card in your deck better (see Lewis, Ray). The Rubber Edict - You'd rather have it and not use it, than need it and not have it. The Shotgun Wedding - Don't commit early unless you absolutely have to.
"What happened to the good ol' days when you Swords to Plowshares'd your own dude to gain life? In my day black has to walk up hill in three feet of dead creatures to get to victory!"
I'm still crossing my fingers for some great common vampires (mayhaps one with lifegain that's a little firmer than Child of Night?).
I'm not so sure it's that bad. It's a half-priced Explosive Vegetation that any mid-range or control deck with green would love to see. Add in bounce lands and it doesn't seem that hard to consistently get it off. I look at these landfall cards as slightly skewed suspend - it may not happen every upkeep (adding/removing a counter) but it's much easer to accelerate it normally.

Dude -- I seriously have a problem with my Confidant/Arena addictions. Thank the heavens for life gain!
I like the idea of a self damage rehab center with a class schedule like:
10 AM "Feel free to keep a faerie rogue back to block"
12 PM "Why tombstalker is a bad idea with your Confidant"
2 PM (advanced) "How to side out Arena vs. Burn"

With all of these good vampires coming out, I think a Vampire-esque Graveborn Muse would be awesome, hopefully better than Vampire Nocturnus. I assume with vampires being pushed, there will be a tribal lord to supplement the Nocturnus.
->Stonewood invocation for the Pauper cube, but I think I want it in a regular cube as well.
It doesn't give trample - I'd rank it just below Wildsize in terms of power for a pump variant. Countering removal will be it's unkicked ability; adding +4/+4 is gravy for a solidly green deck. It the pump and shroud effects were revered (you kicked for shroud) this would be better than the original Giant Growth. While GG for the pump and shroud is keen, it's really just an upgraded Avoid Fate.

I love that pump spell. I think the one mana Lynx might have potential. It's a kind of non-commital, but conditional Kird Ape. Lorthos, the Tidemaker is all kinds of awesome. Maybe not good enough for Cube, but I'd love to use him in other formats.
What do you think about the Khalni Heart Expedition?
I wonder if Vines of Vastwood is better than Stonewood Invocation and should replace it, or if it should be rean alongside it. At any rate, my cube is currently running Might of Old Krosa and this new one has to be better than that.

I don't think it's better than Stonewood Invocation. Vines doesn't give trample, doesn't have split second, and requires GG. Most of the time it will just be a Giant Growth stapled onto Avoid Fate. I think Vines is a great card but should replace weaker buffs than the crushing Invocation.

Stonewood Invocation does not grant Trample either. The only real drawbacks that I see in Vines of Vastwood whem compared to Stonewood Invocation is 1.) it costs GG while SI only requires G, 2.) it's +4/+4 as opposed to +5/+5 with SI and 3.) it doesn't have split second.

Ah, yes. I keep thinking the Invocation is Wildsize jacked up.
I believe that the loss of split second would be critical. Shrouding a creature is pretty easy but having an effect that, in essence, cannot be answered feels so much better. There are dozens of plays I've made where split second was the difference maker and taking it out is something I would avoid.
Aside from split second the differences are very small IMHO.

I don't understand why he wouldn't be good if cheated into play somehow. Am I missing something?

He would technically have a form of evasion as you could probably just tap out all their blockers when you attack but he still seems pretty bad.
If you cheat him into play, and have eight available mana, then you didn't need to cheat him into play.

Speaking of vampires if they live for so long where's our Phyrexian Arena on a stick? Even a Dark Confidant at a fairer price would still be cubeable.
