Both states. So, yes also as an aura. The bad part is that it is controller-specific of the aura, not the creature. Otherwise it could be janky play on an opponent's creature.
Are you 100% sure on that? The text on the card is unclear. I figured it would say enchanted creature gets 3 3 flying and gains "at the beginning of your upkeep you lose 1 life".

Why not refer to the text of the card?
The card image in English is attached and should markedly improve things; I had no idea what the card actually did till I went looking for it, as it wasn't in the OP.
As the card indicates, the controller of Herald of Torment loses 1 life per upkeep. I don't know how more convincing this can be if you still don't take other users' responses to be the truth.
The card is okay. It isn't awful, but it isn't awesome. Fine for suicide black as a creature (the instances where I might use bestow are very limited), IMO.
I like it; both costs seem very reasonable, and I feel like the bestow cost is pretty relevant. The longer you wait to play it, the less the 1 life lost per turn will hurt you. And there are plenty of four drops that would like +3/+3 and flying.

Yes, I guess. However, if you simply play it on T3 rather than nothing or anything else (as I do not believe there is anything that can outdo this at 3 CMC in black in the current rotation), you can get in more damage that way.
The utility of Bestow is more or less as back up against sweepers or other removal. The trade-off is that you must play a slower game, though.

Certainly, that's what I mean when I say both costs are reasonable. Getting it out on T3 starts a great clock, though it'll cost you an extra 2 life or so.
Basically this seems like a good card that isn't pushed.
You don't call "dying to removal" if the removal is more expensive in resources than the creature. If you have to spend BG (Abrupt Decay), or W + basic land (PtE) to remove a 1G, that is not "dying to removal". Strictly speaking Goyf dies to removal, but actually your removal is dying to Goyf.
I dream about casting Stab Wound as a response to an opposing Herald.
I look forward to playing White Black enchantments, however, should they create any playable 1 and 2 drop bestow creatures to fit the slew of playable 3-4 drop bestow critters.
Bestow is essentially a weaker / worse costed Undying / Perish, isn't it -- and most bestow cards compare to Sightless Ghoul or Murderous Redcap in that manner, except even more expensive, while giving your opponent (if he uses white/green) a choice to remove the biggest of the threats: The enchantment -- or the creature.
Heck, for the most part, Bestow is just worse TotemArmor because of the utter lack of good mechanics on them and pricier cost, plus it most often leaves you with the worst part -- the bestow creature, and not the creature worth enchanting with something.
I mean: Where is the reasonably costed and obvious cards, like:

Yes, it occupies similar space as Undying and Totem Armor in that it protects against removal, but it's not quite the same. You're discounting the versatility aspect. Bestowing is obviously better than just playing it as a creature, but is only available later in the game, and if you have a worthy creature to enchant. That situation won't always arise, but you have the option of playing this guy as an early beater. With Undying there's just the guy, and if it never goes to the graveyard it never gets the +1/+1. With Totem Armor you can also get the Voltron thing going, but you can also be 2-for-1'd.
Your hypothetical creature would be really good. Soldier of the Pantheon --> that = 4/2 attacking on T2, which when it dies will become a 2/1 again. (And pro multicolor etc.) And you'd still have the option of playing it as a creature if you really needed to. Bestow has to have a relatively high cost to make up for the great value you get, and the fact that it already has a lower possible cost.
Back to the demon -- his direct competition is Lifebain Zombie. Same cost, both evasive 3 power guys. LBZ is much better when you're playing against green or white, obviously, but is pretty much a whiff if your opponent is playing black. Herald of Torment is more flexible in that there's less discrepancy in matchups, not to mention he's tougher and is potentially a better late-game topdeck. I could see playing him game 1 and siding in LBZ if they're in G or W, or the opposite and siding him in game 2 if they're playing MBD.

This is the correct analysis. Lifebane Zombie is more of a risk/reward card and a meta call. With black and blue being as prevalent as they are Lifebane is actually a little less good than it should be.
The beauty of the Herald is the flexibility. A 3/3 flyer for 1BB with a minor drawback isn't world-beating. It is pretty decent on curve, but by no means amazing. The same can be said for the bestow cost on the guy. It is pretty good, but not incredible.
However, having the option for *both* makes this quite a good card. The bestow giving a creature flying is key to allowing you to push damage through when you might not. You should not be unhappy drawing this card on turn 1, or on turn 6.
I believe that if any heavy black aggro (not devotion) deck becomes viable, they would maindeck this card over Lifebane Zombie (though LBZ would be in the side).
Not really sure why anyone would play this in constructed. High pick in draft though.
It significantly decreases your clock in the late game. That Gray Merchant on the board becomes a significant threat if it's a 5/7 flyer over a 2/4 nothing, for instance. It also has the added benefit being another turn 3 play if desired (Because you won't draw into Nightveil every game, after all) particularly in the black MUs. It's early pressure coupled with creating a late game threat from non-threats. If you look at it like this, it appears pretty good.

My question is, do you still get dealt damage if it is enchanting something, or just when its a creature

4 toughness would make it really, really good.
