Be a lemming hunter. Don't be a lemming. Really, all you had to do was explain to him the popularity metric, not give him the lemming hunter manifesto...
This is pretty crazy. It used to be that the deck had to WIN the event before card X shot up in price (see: Eggs). Now merely an 8-1 record on Day 1 is enough to do that. WTF???

What's even worse is that over half of the price spike happened before Day 1 was over.
Yea it should have been, maybe I can still find some for cheap
You might be able to find some in the binders of unaware traders but the internet has been cleared of all cheap ones and its been a pretty big talking point so most people are probably aware by now. SFM is one of those cards that I wouldn't be surprised to see pop up in a commander deck some day.
As for fist of suns, this is just ridiculous. These kind of spikes really are absurd but in the end they'll only end up hurting the people specing. Tin fins operates perfectly fine without fist, mono u delver isn't popular enough to warrant the price on shoal, mono g devotion hasn't even been proven to be tier 1/2 competitive and I can't see genesis wave being that popular. People are going to "spec" on these cards and then get stuck with binders full of cards allegedly worth $10 that no one will pick up. I honestly don't think this habit of buying out every copy of a given card then trying to dump them for 5x the price will sustain itself in the long run.

Summoner's Egg. I'm just so sick of the speculators at this point. TWoo could build a deck with Tibalt and he'd be a $30 planeswalker over night.
It would be one thing if the card in question actually broke the format. But Shoal and Egg are nowhere close to breaking the format. It's just a bunch of dealers buying out stocks to make a buck. It also highlights the lemming problem of Modern, and probably magic formats generally, where players just invest in cards and decks because professional players endorse them. That's just as bad when it's tier 1 netdecking as it is when it's tier 4 speculation.
People need to get better at card evaluating, plain and simple. I look at Fist of Suns and think to myself, "I'm never go to play this and its situational at best." Also, are peple that gullible to think Ninja Bear Delver was going to be a thing?

I think the thing about ninja bear delver is it looks like a really fun deck to play and for a lot of people who play blue in modern already, Shoal is probably the only card keeping them from putting the deck together for some fun FNM's. Mine have basically been collecting dust for years and I can't decide if I should sell them or keep them to play U delver every once and a while at small tournaments.
What do you guys think about mutavaults? Are they inflated right now because of standard and to what degree? What's the forecast?
For a little while when they just got the reprint they were going for $15ish. They only jumped to their current price when people started jamming them in whatever standard deck they could. If you wait for them to rotate I'd guess they'll drop back down to 15 or lower, just a guess though.

There's several factors. After the reprint they dropped a lot, but they've steadily gained since then. I think Standard is the biggest factor, but it should be noted that in Modern, 8-Rack seems to be gaining some popularity, as has Merfolk (due to Thassa/Master of Waves), and both decks play it.
However, the biggest reason is Standard play. Mutavault is great in Standard because of how it can withstand sweepers, Supreme Verdict in particular. This makes it a popular card in decks that want a way to withstand a Supreme Verdict... and sometimes in decks that play Supreme Verdict.
Mutavault is almost certainly going to remain very relevant as long as it's in Standard, so I'd expect a reasonably large drop in price due to rotation.

I'm kicking myself too. I think it is because of True-Name Nemesis getting printed. Honestly, it should have been this expensive for a while now.

The funny thing is that Genesis Waveis probably worse than Primal Command and Tooth and Nail in Monogreen Devotion.

GAH. Ugh, just learned not to wait the hard way. I've been meaning to make a tron inspired artifact deck with it.
It will probably come back down some before rising again over the summer.
