I am looking at making a new EDH deck that focuses on artifacts only for the entire deck. (minus lands obviously) The concept of the deck though, is to just be able to create problems in a multiplayer game, with not having a real serious win condition. I'd rather be able to do some crazy combo's, sneaky tricks, etc.
Now, at first i thought of running a colorless Legend as my general. But, there are some great artifacts out there these days that require colored mana to function. So that idea is out. My next thought, is to use a 5 color general like Child of Alara or Progenitus.
That's where I need the help of all the great EDH deckbuilders here. I've been playing since Mercadian block, so I know classic cards pretty well. But I would say around the time of Zendikar, I stopped following new sets for the most part, so my knowledge from then up to now is pretty rough.
So, I'm looking for a solid general, and post any idea that you have used, or know of one you have read before with the artifacts. Thanks for reading and for helping out
Sydri, Galvanic Genius seems like the obvious choice. Don't play Sharuum, the Hegemon... it has some obvious associations with infinite combo, and if you're just playing for cool interactions, Sydri is better at it anyway.
There's also Glissa, the Traitor but that would probably leave out the good colored artifacts you are thinking of using, but she's a good alternative to a mono-brown commander.
A while ago, some person used Cromat of all things and it has ONLY artifacts (and like 10 colored spells revolving around artifacts). Makes sense, since you have a little leeway in how you want to use Cromat's abilities.
If you aren't totally decided on pentacolor, Slobad, Goblin Tinkerer is my personal favorite artifact deck general. He's the only one you need not worry about mass artifact hate with when you can't find your Darksteel Forge.
Sydri, galvanic genius/Karn, silver golem can do some fun things (sydri opening up colors and probably coming out earlier despite types of mana (certainly castable more times in a game)). Slobad, goblin tinkerer gives you red and some protection against the cards that really punish all-artifact strats (as well as allowing jokulhaups/oblit type cards to end the game if you're into that (he can be built without them though)). Sharuum the hegemon gives you combos if you want, sweet recursion if you don't, and decent colors (assuming you are playing paper your group will adjust to the cutthroatness of the deck after a game or two, so playing a 'threatening' general shouldn't matter too much- unless you build it to be threatening). Arcum Daggson can do neat things, but generally boils down to fetching the same things and becomes linear (and hated out). Glissa, the traitor gives you a pretty good recursion engine as well as a clearer buildpath, also she is great at defense and has a decent cmc. She also opens up less usual colors for artifact decks and lets you use unusual cards like plague boiler, spellbombs, and capsules. Hanna, ship's navigator gives you blue white and a decent recursion system. Jor Kadeen, the prevailer, red white, begs to lead an aggressive artifact beatdown deck.
Best? It depends on what you want to do. Beat down some permanentless saps with your big robots? Slobad (don't like to obliterate/your group will be pissed? Not Slobad). Want cute synergies/combos, like animating a nev's disk so you can REanimate it with nim deathmantle, so it can untap and you can clear a threatening army? Karn/Sydri.
These are the ones I'm most attracted to and I think they have the most interesting possibilities for artifact decks. Personally, if I were to run non-Karn, I would play some nonartifacts. There are some problem strats for artifacts that you can shore up, and I see no reason not to. It can also give you some not blatantly obvious reactive power (since you're typically playing off the board, save orrery/shimmer myr/instant speed sorta stuff). I've considered some sort of affinity style Kadeen deck, and I think faith's reward would make it into the first draft at least. Also, there are some very potent mass artifact reanimation cards. If I truly felt like including no colored spells, I'd probably convince myself to do Karn. Karn does kinda up the cost of a deck just because of nonbasics (we have a Karn deck and it still has a few basics because we just didn't have enough colorless nonbasics... even with some truly janky garbage in there), but there are plenty out there that are dirt cheap and bring some weird minute advantage (if you play with mass nonbasic hate regularly, this would be a poor choice).
I'd say Hanna, Ship's Navigator is my favorite, although I did just make a sweet artifact deck with Barrin, as its nice to have a sac outlet, and to be able to bounce your creatures. Mishra, Artificer Prodigy can make your artifacts uncounterable through Nether Void, and Arcum Dagsson is a kind of tinker on a stick deal.
I like Thada Adel, Acquisitor for an artifacts deck since you get to play with everyone artifacts. It's also a tutor effect for answers that doesn't get super linear.
If you don't mind focusing on artifact creatures, Animar can be pretty good. He let's you get them out cheap and they power him up.
Vorel of the Hull Clade gives you all sorts of shenanigans with the counter based artifacts. You can make giant everflowing chalices or blast everything with Lux Cannon.
Memnarch is probably better with non-artifact cards but he still has nice tricks. Sculpting steel can copy anything, you can uptap your lands with unwinding clock, use blinkmoth urn. He can also steal stuff.
If I was to drop down from 5 color to 3, I would probably pick Sydri. I agree about Sharuum though.
Kozilek, the butcher of truth. There is a really well written primer in the multiplayer section.
I just bookmarked that as a potential guide. I like the build, but I will wait in case I see something else with colored powered artifacts that I like more.

This is exactly how I was thinking of building this deck. But, just not using Cromat.
My Favorite has always been Bosh throwing heavy objects is always fun
I was under the assumption that Bosh's ability couldn't be played because he is colorless. Did they make an exception?
Overall, i like the suggestions. As far as what I want to do with the actual deck, I like cards like Warp World. If I had to pick about 10 spells that were NOT artifacts, that would be #1. Hence, why I was thinking of running a 5 color general.
Yep, Bosh's colour identity is red, just like how Memnarch's colour identity is blue and Thelon of Havenwood's is black and green. The colour identity includes mana in the text box (but not reminder text).
I have completed the insane task of looking at every artifact ever printed via Gatherer. I noted in a document file, each card that has my interest in using for the deck. I also looked up instants/sorceries that had 6+ CMC for all colors that had some sort of wacky effect, or looked like fun for multiplayer EDH.
now i have the task of breaking down roughly 240 cards down to a single deck.
After hearing of the Myr suggestion for a deck, I know I will build that eventually. Thanks again for that suggestion Zero.
Question for a Mod:
Once I get a deck list put together, and post it here, do i request to have this thread moved to the appropriate section? or would that be taken care of automatically?

Just make a new post in the appropriate section and update this one with a link imo. Easier for new people to find it and help.
One of his favorite things to do is turn 3: Play Rasputin, Remove 5 counters for Conjurer's Closet, save 2 to ward off small burn spells, flicker. Untap turn 4 with 13 mana minimum. blightsteel colossus + lightning greaves anyone?

I'm noting this as a whole other deck to build after this one. Seems like fun. Thanks
