He looks like enough of one to have me confused. Better?
That's why i think he should have been saved for a block or two in teh future. If they where so intent on pushing him into Theros, why not give him a silly hat and make him a Cabalist Dementia Summoner? Cause that's what he is. A Dementia Summoner.
Love love LOVE the gender-neutral thing Ashiok has. Shkle looks really cool, although I don't think there's room for shklim in future blocks however. No real room for character development.

Dementia Summoning is not limited to Cabalists. And only the greatest of the Dementia Summoners had a hat worth mentioning.
Um, white skin as opposed to black, no mask, clothing inspired by Hindu design aesthetic, half it's head is missing yet it still has recognizable human features on what's left?
Again, I turn you to this picture. The guy on the right has the same pale skin, same facial blur. And I didn't look at the clothes.

[I was permabanned and all I got to show for it was .... well, nothing.]
Almost positive the bad guy in The Purifying Fire was referred to as one. So assuming I'm right, there's that. Well, technically it was Dementia Caster but still. Same stuff.
Also, it's silly to assume that somewhat vague magical abilities are restricted to specific sects in an infinite multiverse.

The vampire? Walbert from the Order of Heliud? (Haven't seen the similarity with Heliod before. Heh.)
I'm sure other people are wondering what exactly Ashiok is. Is (s)he a Horror? A nightmare? A human or Returned with some magical deformation? I hope there's a flavor article about this.
Sorry if this isn't in quite the right place. I wasn't sure if this should go in speculation or not.
I think Ashiok's female. And not a Returned, just someone who's so steeped in nightmare there's been some warping. I'm fairly certain she is/was human to start with. I doubt that "human" applies any more, though. Heck, I doubt female applies any more.
EDIT: lol, meganathed. This is what I get for trying to post and do science at the same time.
And until Ravnica, we only knew of Thrulls from the Ebon Hand/Phyrexia. What is your point? The multiverse is infinite, quite literally, it has no beginning and no end. As such, simple logic dictates that various forms of magic would originate multiple places within the multiverse independently of each other.
This is quite a useful tool for worldbuilding such as which is done by WotC yearly for each and every new block we get. It means that they have more options available to them when making new sets instead of painting themselves into a corner.

It's about time for the reserved list to die, for the sake of Vintage and Legacy (And Commander).
Not exactly, no - apart from the paleness, what is left of his face seems normal - not so much in the case of the Returned (they also seem to loose their ears - or have them "merged" to the skull").
OK. What is a returned? I've probably seen them but forget.

Obviously was meant to be a returned, but when they realized it was more flashy not knowing anything about him they preferred to leave everything in mystery... so you never will know something about its history. Is the same as with Lost and Prometheus.

My point is this. Cabalists used to be unigue with their magics. They just suckerpuched that unigueness for something new and flashy. From what we've seen of Ashiok, not be confused with Ashtok, he brings nothing new to the scene except his appearance.
Why can't he have a silly hat? Why does wizards deny me of these things?

Theran Zombies. People who have managed to find their way out of the underworld but lost their identities in the process. The ordeal eradicates any distinguishing features they may possess, leaving their faces blank and their bodies hairless. They are not mindless however.

They were unique, on Dominaria.
Besides, there is nothing that tells us that it was not taught the craft by Cabalist survivors on Dominaria. it is a planeswalker after all, which means it can travel the planes.

I think it's quite rude of you to keep mentioning hats around Ashiok, it's not the nightmare mage's fault he can no longer wear one.

He should try damnit! Let it hover above is head! Spike it on a horn! For Skellum!
I'm sure wizards will dig deeper in his background as time passes by. And i'm sure he will end up fine. It's just they stole the Cabal's thunder atm, thats all.

As someone who loves Chainer's Torment more than any other mtg book, hell it's in my top 5 of all books I'm completely fine with them giving ANY reference to dementia summoning. The style of magic was probably the best thing that came out of Otaria.
... then Ashiok's entire design is a failure. Not only are the abilities crap, even for a UB 'walker, he/she looks exactly like an unmasked Returned?

.... we've had an Arabian-Nights themed set already. It was called.... Arabian Nights.
That means nothing. We've had two Ravnica sets and, after a fashion, 4 Lorwyn ones.
Also, Seht's Tiger has to have come from somewhere.

brb lighting a candle for Skellum.
He's not returned because it's not from the plane. I fail to see how this is difficult.
Until now it was.

Can't wait to see a second Golem planeswalker with a collection of powerfull of artifacts inside him. Big universe and all.

I don't see the black skin. It's quite light. But then again, I haven't made any art for Magic lately. (Or ever.)

The vampire yes.
And you know damn well what I meant by that. A style of magical casting is nowhere as restricted as a single characters design.
