I am wondering how many of you guys have family members, maybe cousins or brothers or sisters, that still do not know you play Magic the Gathering. I have kept it a secret from my father for years but last night I got a little buzzed and summoned the courage to tell him I play Magic. He said "OK" and patted me on the back and even asked me how to play. Have you kept this secret before or maybe still keep it a secret from those closest to you?

Do to others whatever you would like them to do to you. This is the essence of all that is taught in the law and the prophets. (Matthew 7:12)
Make the white queen run so fast, she hasn't got time to make you wise.
Pilot of the storm who leaves no trace, like thoughts inside a dream.
Doctor, my eyes, tell me what you see. I hear their cries... just say if it's too late for me.
Doctor, my eyes...cannot see the sky. Is this the prize for having learned how not to cry?
Pretty much everyone I know is aware of it, from my girlfriend's friends to my boss. Anyone who's not an idiot won't really have a problem with it (as long as it's not having a negative impact on your schooling / working / social life). In fact, I brought it up at work as a guilty pleasure during some team building exercise at my office, and about a third of the people in my department admitted to playing it either in the past or that they currently play casually. Some people have even come up to me later and asked for advice on getting through Duels of the Planeswalkers.
When I was in highschool I was terrified of people knowing that I played, but as I got more mature (now in my late 20s), and as the people around me got more mature, it became no big deal. It's amazing that the more everyone grows up, the more they're okay with me playing games. The only people that seem to have a problem with it are those who have some other hobby that's "cool" but equally a waste of time, and they don't seem to see the parallel - usually people who spend all their time at bars and bragging about how drunk they got, etc. Fortunately, as I've gotten older I see fewer and fewer of those people on a daily basis.
I'm a committed grinder (tons of PTQs / GPs / etc.) so once people know why I'm gone all the time, it's easier to just let them know that I'll be at a Magic event. My parents used to hate it when they were still paying for everything I did, and saw it as a waste of time that I could be using for studying, along with being a waste of their money. Now that I'm 100% self-sufficient, they fully support it.
It isn't like everybody here treats their MTG cards like porn magazines am I right? Oh no, someone is coming, better hide my stash.
Well, they're also hidden for their own protection. The average non-player doesn't realize the value of mtg cards and how liquid they are.
Everyone in my family knows I play Magic. Most of them unwillingly accept it and just think of it as a character flaw. My wife right now periodically gets upset that I go to Magic tournaments. I think if I was willing to quit FNM more often and not travel to nearby big tournaments, she would be more understanding. Still, she sees it as it is; a big money pit. Yeah, I make a profit quite often. When I spend that profit on more Magic cards, it doesn't really show up to the average person. Only I see it.
Magic was actually probably one of the factors for my divorce in my 1st marriage. I was always gone on Friday and I even asked her if it was all right. I never had the slightest clue that it was not all right with her at all until we were separated. Then, it came up. Also, in her culture, they see any form of playing cards as gambling and gambling is horribly bad. Since I am only half from that culture and much more Americanized, I don't see anything wrong with having mtg as a hobby.

I had no idea that there was some sort of stigma attached to playing Magic. I "openly" and "proudly" played in the 90's and do so again with my son now.
I am perplexed at these admissions of being "caught" and having to come forward to parents and family. How in the world could playing Magic be worse than video gaming?
Naw, man. I keep my cardboard slingin on the down low in case the 5-0 role up tryin to bag some trade sharks to get em snitchen on the bigger dealers or international distributors. I aint no snitchin planeswalker. Its all in the game man.
But seriously, if your worried about being judged for playing this game it might not be for you.
Most of my extended family knows I play. A fair number of them don't know anything about the game, but for the most part they're receptive of it. A few even ask about how I do when I attend tournaments. The last time I was doing well at an SCG event (I was 6-1 at the time) my mother posted about it on facebook and several family members commented to cheer me on. So yeah, very receptive and supportive. My immediate family all know how to play, though my brother only plays EDH on occasion and my mother hasn't played in quite some time, but she still likes opening packs. My step-dad plays legacy, though he doesn't have much time for it nowadays.
If you treat it like it's something to be ashamed of, so too will the people who find out about it.
Haha, my dad called it "that satanic game" back in 1993/1994 when I played heavily.. It did seem to have a more religious overtone to the game back then. But it was a game, a fun one to me.
Another interesting thread. I think it would be hard to hide that you play magic. Since you need magic cards to play and they need to be store somewhere.
Not sure its anything to be embarrassed about. Its obviously not a "cool" hobby in high school, but birds of a feather flock together.
My immediate family knows I play. My friends that I play with (obviously) know, but the rest of my friends and family do not.
I don't know why I care what they think (or that they would think badly about it), but I'd rather they all didn't know. I put a lot of effort into hiding it! (And have been playing for 12+ years now.) I usually just tell people I'm going to "play cards" which they assume means poker.
who ****ing cares if you play magic? why the hell would you hide it? its not like you are a fan of animal porn where you hide your movies and dont place them on the DVD-Shelf.
I had to tell my boss when I went to GP Vegas and we had 3 people fired the week before. I got $1000 in travel cost non refundable. I said I am going to my tournament or you can cover my costs. I had a great time at GP Vegas.

Seriously? You act like you just came out as gay to your fundamentalist parents. What is the big deal? Why would you keep it secret? Would you hide the fact that you play on a sotfball team, or that you do Stand-up comedy for fun at open-mics?
I do not keep it a secret from anyone, least of all family. There are almost surely people who do not know, but then it has not come up and would probably mean nothing to them. I have not sent out a newsletter or anything, but if something comes up in conversation then I would not even think about holding it back. I taught my cousin and both of his parents to play and for a while we had a pseudo-regular game.
I told my girlfreind I played magic within an hour of meeting her, she thought I was a magician that did magic tricks. I don't find it worth hiding honestly, if someone judges you for it that's their problem. If your family judges you to the point where you feel you need to hide it I feel kind of bad for you especially.
The only hard part of telling people you play Magic is having them understand what you are talking about. I usually start off saying I play a card game. Or I'll use the acronym MTG if I think they might actually recognize it.
Just saying "I play Magic", without explaining what that is, is going to get you a lot of confused looks from people.

i really dont get why you would hide that^^
my thought's exactly...
It's a fairly benign habit (for the most part). I get out of the house, socialize with others, and have fun.
You'll be surprised about how many people know about mtg. My boss plays (he's over 50), which is cool, and I have a cousin who plays as well, and my brother played back during the early days, and I've been playing since Tempest...
My family knows, but I don't bring it up that often. My sister bought me cards last year during the holidays and my mother once bought me a box of Eventide when it was around.
I'm supportive of them and they're supportive of me.
