Do you guys ever tire of this Modern vs. Legacy dick-swinging contest? It's not much more evolved from "my dad can beat up your dad!" kind of crap. Christ, this place is pathetic sometimes.

The thread is actually standard vs. modern/legacy.
As I said in the OP, in terms of play, I actually like all three, each for different reasons. My decision to leave standard has to do 100% with cost, and 0% with a dislike of the format.
I do wish more legacy die-hard's would relax a bit and give modern an honest shot. I think much of the problem is they want to basically play their pet legacy deck, which makes no sense. Modern isn't legacy, and SHOULDN'T be legacy. Formats are different for a reason. More importantly, I fail to understand why one should have to choose between one or the other. Why not simply play BOTH! Saying Modern sucks because you can't play high tide (or Maverick, or Stoneblade, or whatever) is no different from saying EDH sucks because you can't play high tide or whatever. Makes no sense.
You find losing to combo frustrating, but opt to play aggro?
This entirely makes sense. You're looking at it backward. If you start from the premise that my favorite deck is aggro, then of course I'm going to find losing to combo frustrating, because those are the matchups that my deck is bad against! If my favorite deck is control, then I shouldn't be frustrated losing to combo, because I shouldn't be losing to combo unless I misplay a lot.
(in the same vein, this is why it makes sense for aggro players to feel mad about losing to turn 2 combo but ok about losing to turn 2 bte spam)
^^^ Sounds like wanting to play only one style of deck (no real meta-gaming) but wanting that deck to have no bad matches.
Anybody who feels this way is smart to steer clear of Legacy!
Legacy players who hate losing to combo play control (sometimes midrange - midrange is getting far too strong vs combo for the health of the format). Legacy players who hate losing to FoW play aggro. Legacy players who hate losing to to Burn play combo.
Legacy players who just want a good chance to win decide based on their opinion of the meta.
17 is more modern players than my area has for modern and legacy combined. If I want modern, I have to travel 50 miles, legacy, often up to 200. Thankfully, I have a great draft group of about 14 who are starting to branch out into other formats, so hopefully it'll get better.
Sorry for the late reply. I got busy with cosplay stuffs and forgot to reply here.
That's a lot of effort you put into playing legacy and Modern. I bet you have some nice Modern and Legacy decks to drive that far.
Over here we're having the first Modern tourney on Saturday. 150 peso fee, about half the price of a Blood Crypt in our area. Good thing the players managed to convince the shop owner to have a lower entrance fee, the owner originally wanted to have a fee of 300 pesos. Shop is approximately 1 kilometer from my house.
High tide is still a viable choice, I believe solidarity fell out of the meta a while back though. Still a fun deck i'd just rather play my casual budget infimill high tide deck using scrivener + snap for infinite mana. One of the guys I play with made a deck just to go against it though, i'm assuming he added in pithing needle maybe cranial extraction or stifle (if he has any) so I may switch up my sleeves to throw him off a bit :).
Because many of the players seem very devoid of knowledge or experience outside of what they read on the internet, hence why an article like this is necessary:
players who are limited in scope are bad. no surprises there. its why so many new players are upset when they lose to combo or control. it attacks the game from a different axis they typically play on.

I was considering getting into Modern but considering I'm not that great of a competitive player I decided against putting a lot of money into the format for now
Standard seems like a good place to start but I wouldn't mind moving up to Modern and maybe Legacy but that's putting the cart before the horse for me
The limited card pool is certainly very alluring too: limits breed creativity and while I'm far from good I've been told many times that I'm a rather creative deck builder.
I just don't want to spend a fortune on a mana base, I guess that's the main thing about STD for me: I got a lot of RTR block cards so I do have a lot shocklands and it seems like a good way around that going into Theros
Because many of the players seem very devoid of knowledge or experience outside of what they read on the internet, hence why an article like this is necessary:
Standard is the wild west of Magic, the format changes so much so quickly that you need to come up with innovative deck ideas often. This isn't something easy to do, so many players will play like they would in Modern or Legacy and simply copy a successful deck, but this strategy only works a month or two after a set's release, before that, it's those able to make brilliant metagame calls like Kibler that will have success.
I do wish more legacy die-hard's would relax a bit and give modern an honest shot. I think much of the problem is they want to basically play their pet legacy deck, which makes no sense. I'm a Legacy die-hard (I only play magic once a week (married w/ children), so its Legacy)
I don't have a legacy pet deck (I have a bunch of decks in rotation)
I have modern pet deck (because I have very few modern specific cards)
AGREED, Modern and Legacy are completely different
In Legacy the decks are so powerful they can always win. Particularly decks like high-tide are good at fighting through hate.. Whether a DECK is popular is not a measure of its power.
players who are limited in scope are bad. no surprises there. its why so many new players are upset when they lose to combo or control. it attacks the game from a different axis they typically play on.
I wouldn't say "bad", but I agree about attacking from a different axis. They just aren't used to it.

That makes perfect sense. It's very reasonable to say "I don't get to play enough to play multiple formats, so I basically only play my favorite one, and it's ______" That's very different from saying a format sucks because it isn't your favorite format, or because it doesn't allow your favorite decks/cards which is something I see a lot of.
I have the same time restrictions and legacy is my favorite too. I'm focusing more in terms of acquisition though on modern because I believe over time it will become the more popular non-rotating format (simply due to cost), and because of the cost itself.
I wouldn't say "bad", but I agree about attacking from a different axis. They just aren't used to it.
bad may have been the wrong word, but the people who see the different lines and angles of play (and can subsequently play them) are always the ones winning. it doesn't matter if its limited or constructed.

Legacy and Modern are different, so naturally they have different appeal! I gave a bullet point list of reasons I avoid Modern - none of them are because I have a pet deck (I have eight Legacy decks with two or three in the works). That said, if a person wants to play only one deck ever (for some reason) they pretty much have to stick to a single format.
There are lots of people in my area who do play both, but for the "die hards" I think there are two primary factors keeping us out of Modern:
Why have hamburger when we can have steak? Especially if we have limited time for recreation (many Legacy players are older with jobs and families).
The turn four rule and aggressive banhammer (related) are a major turn off if we're used to Legacy where the format regulates itself and nothing is OP unless it truly warps the meta. I find it almost offensive; and it's the only feature of Modern which I think "sucks".
Also most Legacy players have been in the game for a while and already own staples. Breaking into a new format means much additional money.

Personally, I'd give Modern another shot if WOTC would. Lets be serious here, the current Modern banned list includes a vanilla 3/3 that scarcely sees play anymore in Legacy.
The issues Legacy players have with Modern arent about not being able to play a certain deck, its about the table not having enough legs to keep itself upright without WOTC standing there and holding it in place.
WOTC's current hardline stance on Modern means they either have to completely avoid printing new cards that have any strong interactions with cards in the Modern card pool, or else keep banning more cards.
Heck, even Standard's rotation you can at least plan for, Modern's ever expanding banned list decisions just get announced whenever WOTC feels like they havent tinkered with it in awhile.

Good old rock - nothing beats that!
D'oh!
Lisa chooses her strategy according to what she expects to play against, and doesn't get frustrated. Bart only wants to play rock, and hence does very poorly.
Playing Standard largely because my group plays? Otherwise i would be collecting to build Vintage and/or Legacy.
Modern my group is considering, but the price barrier is high. My group does not play Legacy or vintage (or even modern, but at least they are considering modern), which is the only reason I don't play those more often.
Spam warning.
