the only reason the jace art doesn't fit is because it shows his face, in plain light.
So did the original RTR Jace art.
This Jace art is genuinely poor. I actually think his face is the only redeeming part of the art - but really it's awful. There's nothing special about it, the colors are bland, the detail is worse than that of old Ravnica, and his outfit looks like pajamas. He's not sleek, sexy or magical in appearance. Just an ordinary old looking guy wearing a weird loose cotton getup that fits him like a cheap Halloween costume wandering around a dated-looking setting.
not everyone went to community college and took Art Appreciation courses.
Not sure what that's supposed to mean. Are you saying real colleges don't have art programs, or that you took art appreciation classes from a community college, and that somehow makes you qualified to insult an actual artist?
What a kind person you are to throw all the members of this forum under the bus like that. And to do it to make someone feel better about themselves! You really are a classy person, you know that?
I edited my post several times, and at varying points started it with "Many..." and "Too many...". But hey, read into it whatever you want. Just remember that there's a huge difference between "I don't like this art" and "this art is straight garbage."
Again, respect is paramount. <Snip>

It has nothing to do with phoning in. You have to put two characters together in one piece but they have to work separately. There are also some pretty aggravating compositional restraints.
There's a reason I don't do comic covers and, given the reaction I see here,I won't be doing any more VS products for the foreseeable future either. Not my cup of tea it seems.
I personaly like the art if you were going for bridging a gap between Theros and Ravnica. Feels very Theros. I may not like the fact the art depicts Jace and Veraska, but other then that its fantastic. I think its just that people get ultra caught up in planeswalkers.
I have this feeling that Jace looks like a real life person standing in front of a backdrop.
The only thing that is ugly is the outer packaging of the product. The actual background isn't as bad, although it does look like Jace and Vraska is standing in a stage.
Out of the duel deck packagings I seen, Jace vs Vraska looks the most bland and boring of them all.
He looks tired and worn out, which feels in character with being the Guildpact; having to play babysitter to 10 psychotic children constantly try to kill one another and himself. He looks like he's having a bad day, and might just take it out on the next mofo to cross him.
And then along comes Vraska...
This is by far the best thing to come out of this discussion.

Perhaps I should have been a little less obtuse. I should have said that not everyone here has learned to critique art, and don't let that lead you to think that I know how to do that properly either.
Despite posting here several times, I haven't really commented one what I think of this version of Jace. Let's critique him using the elements present in the work we can see:
Texture: Background is soft and ephemeral. Jace stands out from the background, which is always a good thing. He has a very solid presence in the image.
Space: Limited. Cards are very limited spaces to have artwork be done, especially with Planeswalkers. Therefore, it is vital that the subject of the art be able to be portrayed in the space provided. Mr. Kieryluk didn't have the luxury of dictating his own space, so there's nothing more to be said here.
Shapes and Lines: Both geometric and abstract. Background shows more geometric and architectural themes, which contrast with the abstract lines and flowing cloth of Jace's outfit. Jace has a lot of non-symmetrical elements present in his clothing and general look - lines on one side of the face but not the other, only one glove, shoulder decoration only on the left side of his body - it creates a sense of imbalance, where the left side is stronger and more detailed than the right, which then clashes with his right-turning face.
Color and Tone: Contrast appears to be a repeating theme here. Jace is in darker, bolder colors compared to the background behind him. He stands out because of this, which can also create the illusion of taking up more physical space in the image, which is good given how little space there was to be used. His clothing colors seem to vary from artist to artist. He always wears blue, but sometimes that blue will be blue-green or navy or any number of other shades. This particular shade of blue doesn't really put me in mind of anything in particular - it is not particularly exciting or noteworthy, but instead more functional, even while decorative.
Perhaps it is his facial features which give us most cause for comment - it is a peculiar (and dare I say unsettling) expression that he has on his face, and because it is peculiar we ask ourselves why he is wearing it. Is it in response to Vraska? But Vraska isn't looking at him - Vraska is looking at US.
His hair is also noteworthy to me. It is a far cry from the anime style of hair he wears in the current Core set - here it is heavy, weighted down on his head, unstyled, and a very dark black, which contrasts with his clothing choices. It is not a very flattering hairstyle at all, I have to say, but Jace isn't a vain sort of person. Still, it would have been nice if he'd taken the time to make himself look a bit more presentable where his hair is concerned.
There is also a definite lack of power in this piece (as has been noted by several posters). There are no auras or glowing hands or eyes, there are no symbols of arcane significance floating around him. There is no mystery here. There is no magic here. These are things we've come to associate with Jace, and while we can't expect you to play to the crowd all the time, couldn't there have been something? Just a little something? A book tucked under an arm? Or maybe he could be pulling down his hood or something?
I wouldn't go so far as to say it is horrible or terrible or nauseating, because it's none of those things. His expression I could have perhaps overlooked, but that hair is just a sticking point with me. It is so...dull. So tired. So lacking in life. If it was messy and sticking up in a dozen different directions I probably would have been fine with it, but I keep coming back to his hair.
What a kind person you are to throw all the members of this forum under the bus like that. And to do it to make someone feel better about themselves! You really are a classy person, you know that?
Um, his statement was correct. The vast majority of people here are incapable of evaluating MTG cards (which you'd think they'd be good at given their experience with MTG), so why should anyone care about their evaluation of art (something we can assume they spend very little time doing)? He didn't throw anyone under the boss, he simply made an obviously factual observation about the MTGS community.
Remember guys, Dark Confidant is unplayable in anything but a monoblack aggro deck.
Don't worry too much about posters on here complaining
Most of them have absolutely no idea what they are talking about
Or... Maybe they do, since they are largely just talking about their own opinions.
I am not saying that we should all slam Igor, I love a lot of Igor's artwork, but c'mon. People are allowed to have opinions about artwork. It is a visual medium, and we look at this stuff, and if you own the card you are probably looking at it frequently if you are playing it. If you don't like it, you have every right to voice that.
The line that gets crossed is when you start slamming the artist him/herself, and in this case I don't think anyone is doing that.
Let me be infinitely clear on something. I have no qualms with your skill as an artist. You could draw doodles and it would crush anything I could draw. I also understand that all art has a description now, which artists must cater to, therefore this pose was not your idea. You just drew what they told you to. Aka, drawing this card was a job, and we can take that or leave it. I get all that.
That being said, I, personally, dislike this depiction of Jace very much. He looks like a normal human wizard with no powers whatsoever. The pose is boring, the lack of power is boring, and the fact that (it looks like) he's wearing a damn onesie is atrocious. The only art I dislike more than this one is the Cloud-Strife-esque emo art on Memory Adept.
On the subject of his inclusion in this product, couldn't be happier. There really isn't any reason he belongs at $30, because that's just price-gouging. He's $10-15 at best, so for another five bucks you get Vraska and 118 more cards. Deal. Rather annoying that Vraska can just -3 to kill Jace outright, but also highly entertaining that Jace's +1 completely neuters the Assassin tokens. Even funnier that Jace's -8 can STEAL VRASKA from the opposing deck.
I usually purchase 2 on the spot if they're worth it, but I'm not too thrilled about $40 for basically 2 Jace's. I'm gonna get it because that's a helluva deal, but I would really like good reprints in here. And in decent numbers like EvT. ( <-- Best DD so far, btw.)

Worst Jace ever. Jared Leto Jace is now hotter than someone. >.< Vraska is awesome though. She looks more in line with the Gorgons of Theros. Plus, I just love Gorgons. Us ladies with snakes for hair have to stick together.
Its sad to see people bashing the artist himself. There are so many worse artists and artworks...

I don't know why people keep latching onto the outfit. It's the same one he wears in the Return to Ravnica art--it even fits him in the same way. Moreover, Smokestack has mentioned that there are strict guidelines on planeswalker style and attire, and that he has received corrections on that very front. Those corrections may not have been on this piece, but the fact is that this is the outfit that Wizards of the Coast wants Jace to wear.
I honestly think the largest fault with the Jace artwork lies in the resolution of the artwork as we have seen it. Look at his face on the packaging--it's much more defined and looks much better. You can see the definition on his lips on the packaging, whereas he simply looks like he's pouting in the 640x434 version of the full art.
Smokestack, not to be too much of a bother, but would it be possible for us to see a higher-resolution version of the Jace art? I think it might address some of the complaints.
Aside from my personal feelings about the art. (I think it is abysmal)
I cannot understand why WOTC keeps beating it to Jace. The character needs to die or something. He already had a duel deck. Five YEARS ago. I appreciate the characters and constancy but he shouldn't be the flagship for a multitude of reasons. Besides being the most uninteresting character he doesn't fit the creatures matter idea that WOTC has been pushing and he has been taking walker space from other colors.
Gross.
At least the price will drop slightly on a played mythic rare and maybe they will put ancestral vision in this DD as well.
Its sad to see people bashing the artist himself. There are so many worse artists and artworks...
No one's bashing the artist himself. On the contrary, every post I've seen that addresses the artist at all has basically said "You're awesome, but this particular piece of artwork sucks."

It's not the outfit, it's the depiction of the outfit in this particular artwork. Compare it with, say, the Jace Beleren artwork. The outfit in the Jace Beleren artwork looks very substantial and three dimensional. The outfit in this artwork looks very flat and two dimensional, like a cheap costume.

This is true. Stylistically, I loved Jace 1.0 and 2.0, but his costume has always been pretty dorky.
Edit: Actually, the Beleren outfit looks pretty boss; like he's wearing some kind of leather armor beneath that cape, instead of the body suit he's worn since RTR.
When I said I would most likely not do VS in the future, it was not because someone hurt my delicate sensibilities. I genuinely think I'm not the right person for that kind of job and there are people that would do a better job here. I was not happy with Elspeth vs Tezzeret and I am not happy with this one. Both are okay on a technical level, but nothing more, despite my efforts. I could do three normal illos in that time and both produce better content and have more fun doing it.
So if I pass a VS gig in the future, I'll do it because I have certain professional obligations towards my employer and towards myself. If I feel I can't fulfil them, I'll skip the job. Nothing to do with people having opinions on a public forum.
Very glad to hear it. Your body of work ranges from great to spectacular, and it only makes sense not to participate in a venture that would have your obvious talents restricted. I have to apologize for my "phoning it in" comment, since it's obvious that many other great MTG artists have also struggled with this; it was just the way I chose to phrase my feeling that duel deck PWs tend to look less good than their standard counterparts.

But it helps to insult the community as a whole, yep yep.
I'd wish some people had been more discreet with their feedback, but giving up on an art-segment seems a little much based on some "numbnuts" on a forum. I mean if it throws you off the horse to read some of these comments, I fear it may be hard to be an artist for the future.

Personal opinion of the art: I like Vraska's portion. Although I better like her standard as it is more fiery from the lighting, while here it's a little more dull lighting, making it kinda passive and not dynamic.
I don't really enjoy Jace's portion, but if it's any consolation I neither like Architect of Thought one bit. Something about a squared face and those white lines on his face doesn't appease me.
I like the scene though. The posture of the characters is too relaxed to seem like an upcoming conflict IMO, but it may be hard to show them aggressively as I picture both are rather (bad word use incoming, sorry) laid back and pulling schemes and tricks, not being frontline figures.
It's not the outfit, it's the depiction of the outfit in this particular artwork. Compare it with, say, the Jace Beleren artwork. I'm not denying that the shrunk-down version that was posted in the arcana is washed out, but the actual artwork is neither flat nor two-dimensional, in my opinion.

Agree to disagree then. I think the new one looks terrible.
So did the original RTR Jace art.
