Linguistics has got to be the most interesting class I have this semester. I shall use this valuable information and learn Phyrexian!
Linguistics is intense stuff. I remember when my ex was taking linguistics classes and I was taking quantum physics, and the stuff we were each doing was so far over the other's head. Occasionally over our own heads as well (mostly me for that one).

I didn't know you could go off-topic on an off-topic thread. This feels weird.
Anyway, I rather put my opinion here and have a talk about it than put it there and feel obliged to respond if someone points at all my spelling mistakes, rendering my comment useless all of a sudden.

I think what is off-topic in the off-topic is the on-topic in the on-topic. When you try to bring the on-topic into the off-topic, the thread will begin a radioactive decay process until its just an unfocused on-topic. If you bring off-topic into on-topic, then cryogen will just slap you with a yellow card
Sadly, he beat me to it. I'm actually mildly upset about that. *I* wanted to be the pedant today!
Also, uuuugh, making your own game sucks. Everyone talks about how it's the dream job and whatever and they lie. It's just a lot of damn work. It should be worth it though, come next year.

Well, making the base of the game can be done in a weekend, just look at all of those Game-Jams, what game are you making? All by yourself or in a team? 2D / 3D ?
Both of you jerks can edit the stax primer then. I hate proof reading and editing.
Mainly because when I do, I end up second guessing myself and erasing 5 hours of work.
Then I get frustrated. And frustration leads to drinking. And drinking leads to me ordering 200 dollars worth of crap online and incorrectly imputing my address, so I never get any of it.

Heh. Paper TCG. I've got one partner to produce the card design, packaging, etc, but the game itself? All me.

Ah, editing, my temperamental love. Honestly, if I didn't have cards to write atm I'd totally edit your stax primer. I may just do that if I get 2 free hours in the future.
Also, I've totally had that exact course of action. Good times.
Man, you've got no idea (unless you've tried doing exactly this, in which case you most certainly do and can sympathize).
We've got one hell of a product though, so things look pretty decent for us. If anyone's actually interested, I'll let people know when I start casting around for playtesting groups and similar whatnots.

I do, but more in the videogames market.
I had some research into board game market and that didn't seem like an easy market, I can only assume the same for card games that need continuis money flow.
EDIT; sure you've sparked my interests, I'll bite, what's the cardgame like?

It's actually quite complicated. The short answer is that becoming MtG, YuGiOh, or Pokemon is extremely hard and requires absurd amounts of money. However, making something smaller with a dedicated fan base (think Legend of the Five Rings or the Star Wars CCG) is actually quite doable. All a game needs to succeed in the card game market (not counting LCGs, which play by appreciably different rules) appears to be about 1% of the market. At that amount, there's enough money going around that a small company can survive and even make a decent little profit.
After GenCon (where I demo'd my game for random strangers and talked to industry members who gave me valuable feedback) it looks like we've got something good enough to get at least that 1% (realistically, probably more) which says that we should go ahead. If we can get 10% of the card game market (unlikely right out of the gate, but possible) then we've really got something great.
Well, that's the idea anyways.
EDIT: Actually, I can't talk too much about it here (no mechanics or anything). All I can say without my lawyer yelling at me a lot (and I do mean *a lot* is that it's a sci-fi strategic card game with a unique combat system and a detailed resource aspect.

For card frame design, packaging, marketing, and other such things, I have my business partner, a professional graphic designer with a great deal of experience (20+ years) and who is quite successful in his chosen field. For actual card art, we are going to be hiring about 30 artists to do a number of pieces each. We also plan to get a few big names to do iconic cards for us.

Always good to get some new ideas out there.
I don't have any actual study or anything to back this up, but it seems like the biggest problem is that people already involved in one TCG are loathe to pickup another one. This would be a huge problem from a market-share standpoint.
At any rate, try to avoid releasing it at the same time as Codex.

Believe me, the testing at GenCon was the best thing we could have ever done. It taught me so much, it's unbelievable.
That is one of our biggest concerns. The market information we've managed to acquire seems to indicate that the market is pretty well held by about 3 big games (I wonder which three? :p) but that after those three there are literally hundreds of smaller games, each of which somehow is making a decent chunk (enough to pay for itself and the guys making it). This tells us that there is at least some market to fight over, enough to make a living. It *is* a major concern though, one we're working on handling.
As for Codex... when's that releasing? I can't seem to figure it out. It looks to have been in development for quite a long time.
