Ouch Thats one of the few cards I was hoping you didnt say lol..... I really enjoy the Witchstalker as I think it give us more reach and stability... considering its a nice blocker against aggro, and it can really give a control deck some problems..... I do feel that the Mistcutter can be used but Im not sold on it being more valuable than the Stalker.... Especially after you take into effect that you can Pump the Stalker with the Bow, Boon Satyr, or a scavenged goliath....
Reverent Hunter is worse than the Witchstalker. Its a good card, but unfortunately very fragile and comes in as a 2/2 more often than you think. If he was 1GG, I would say absolutely.
RDW/WW cant get through enough damage early to be a threat once the hydras get down on the board. Sylvan Caryatid is too good for that matchup. Nylea's Disciple is ok, but I wouldn't worry about it. Honestly Primeval Bounty is great for that matchup as well. You can ramp to it easy, and then every land drop becomes free life, every creatures comes with a buddy that will be bigger than their creatures. Afraid of a god? No need with that card. They cant trample through the beast tokens. Life from lands counters Purph's shocks, beasts block Heliod's clerics.
I've tried the stompy route with this deck as well, honestly going standard Green works GREAT in current sets. Most of our Stompy disappeared with the Innistrad Block. No more Geist, no more PrOoze, no more Wolfir Silverheart/Avenger. Just play some mana producers, throw down hard to answer threats early, make big smash.
Hey all, been reading this forum a lot and was excited when I saw the posting about mono-green for Theros.
In a Tues standard I won the tournament matched up against different aggro decks typically. Haven't tested much against control. It is tuned towards the local meta and aggro that is rampant where I game. Would love input for control. I know there aren't any Witchstalker's in the deck, will likely replace Nylea's disciple and/or a mistcutter or two for them.
I originally started with 18 mana dorks to cast Colossus of Akron but have tuned it back and become more devoted. Its been pretty consistent and again, lot of fun and competitive against the local meta.

I like your deck.... Its goes in a much different direction than my original deck.... Your deck is big ramp into Bigger guys.... My deck is going after quick threats each turn..... To Keep up with the speed of aggro decks while at the same time putting out larger creatures... But I do like your deck... Looks like it could be very good
Running only creatures at first is a pretty good bet. Giant growth, ranger's guile and bow of Nylea are the main contenders but growth and the bow are quite situational. Guile is to protect the hydra but that's not too good against aggro or red.
The combo of bow + polukranos is nice but relies on 2 legendary. I don't like running more then 2-3 of each so the combo won't come online often enough in the matchup where it matters. I prefer to run it from the side.
Sylvan Caryatid is much worse then Gyre Sage in a slow aggro deck like this where every point of damage matters. Especially with Kalonian Hydra. I still run 1 because I feel I need at least 9 mana acceleration with all the big costs, mistcutter and polukranos. You really need to get 1-2 mana dorks early to get online fast.
Mistcutter is pretty good at triggering evolve too. You can drop it for 3-4 to evolve the gyre sages, and everybody.
Kalonian Hydra is so good that I'm pretty sure I need to run a 4th one, dunno where to cut though.
Karametra's Acolyte and Nykthos are beasts in this deck with mistcutter.
Nylea is a 2-of because I need trample but multiples are very bad (it's indestructible after all) and depending on matchups it's a very hit-or miss creature.
Deadbridge goliath and polukranos fit very well the 4 drop being 5/5, deadbridge is also quite solid against control.
Arbor Collossus is a beast. You need him for stormbreath dragon, otherwise you get slaugthered. Definitely a 3-4 of post side if reach is rellevant. I don't like the 2/2 flash for this purpose. It dies to everything and small flyers should not be a problem since you race faster.
Witchstalker is definitely the next card I want to include. I wasn't sold on him at first but I can forsee black being a very difficult matchup with thoughseize, lifebane zombie and removal that doesn't care about the size of things. Might replace boon satyr. The satyr hasn't proven itself too much, especially being a 3-of. Might go to only 1 for combat tricks.
Big mention to Nemesis of Mortals. This card is your get out of jail card against board wipe.

I think you are miss evaluating Bow. It has sooo much text on it. There will always be something to use it for when it is out. Whether its pumping your guys, gaining life, or shooting down fliers. Not to mention, having Bow of Nylea, and Nylea, God of the Hunt out is absurd. Trample and Deathtouch is insane together.
The problem I have with the bow is that it's a slow card. Barring the synergy with Polukranos, you won't get a big impact on your board position when you play it at first.
Almost everything should already die when it blocks (on turn 4-6 they'll need to block your big baddies if they want some HP left). Getting a counter to win a fight is pricey at 5 mana. Killing a flyer that can block you might come handy but again it's quite pricey.
Of course, it helps a lot with devotion and getting an effect every turn gets good fast. In this aggro variant I'd like better to play a Renagade Krasis for 3 mana or Arbor/Kalonian for 5. It's a solid card in more midrange variants though.
The interaction with Nylea is very good too. Mistcutter becomes unstoppable. It suffers the same problem as the Polukranos combo though, both are legendary and you can't count too much on it.
Also, what's great about running no spells is that Duress doesn't affect you.

I concur. The problem decks I have been running into are RDW, white weenie/Boris weenie and control decks. Deathtouch does little to nothing in those matchups. Deathtouch has no power when they are not blocking or have nothing to block with. The activated abilities are not enough to change the balance of the game. Another creature is better.

So my experience with bow has been that it is the swiss army knife in MacGuyvers pocket. It may not look like much but its ability to gain that last bit if life to cushion against aggro is big time. It has given my 3/3 creatures the additional toughness in a pinch. It has helped create a mini wipe with polukranos. I find its 4 abilities to be useful, but not game breakers.

Yeah I think that the bow is a must in this deck.....
Does everyone always forget the Deathtouch/Trample combo of Nylea with Bow? 1 damage is enough to deal lethal with deathtouch, the rest of your damage tramples over. Someone blocks a trampling deathtouch Polu? sweet.. take 4 and lose your dude. Bow/Nylea is nearly required in this deck. We have no massive combat trick for your board barring Enlarge which is a much worse Revenge of the Hunted.
Bow is like everyone else said, a huge utility item. Lifegain is good against WW/RDW, counters help get bigger against GW, pinging off that annoying Calvary Pegasus / Chandra's Phoenix helps too. Plus if you lose big dudes, put em back in the deck and tutor em up with Garruk. The utility is too awesome.
Here is the deck so people dont have to open another window.
I think Burning Tree Emissary is really bad in this deck. The only think you can cast off it is a Scavenging Ooze, and Elvish Mytics or Experiment One, or another BtE. Just seems really out of place, and a little awkward. I am a little surprised to the lack of Bows in the deck.
There was at least 3 mono-green decks this weekend. The one with Nykthos did not make top 8, but I think during the deck tech with Daniel Novak it lists the single Nykthos with one less Mutavault. That is the only difference between their two decks. I'm only missing the cheapest of all cards to replicate this deck...the Deathbridge Goliaths, which I swore I had! I tried adding two more Polukranos, but legendary creatures just sit in my hand at times.
I thought the same as you at first Metalcrafter. Moved a 3 cards out for Garruk, but he just isn't "needed" half of the time. I also pondered splashing red for Xenagos or Domri, but...why fix something that isn't broken
Keep up the good work Bran and everybody else. Brainstorming into a great Green deck and testing all the possibilities.

The deck needs Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx. Burning tree into activation is a pretty sweet interaction. Burning Tree also helps turn on devotion.

Thanks I really appreciate it.... NOTE: A few cards that are being maindecks in the SCG Cleveland tournament Reverent Hunter and Burning-Tree Emissary, with 4x Mutavault over Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx.... I think I like BTE and the Hunter but at the same time his deck is not running ANY of the Bow of Nylea which I'm not sure I understand.... And I understand the Mutavault but its tough to decide between it and Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx... Im interested in heraing some opinions... Also no Arbor Colossus....
Reverent hunter + BTE seems to work looking at the results. Something like
1: Elf
2: Exp One, Tusker
3: Exp One, BTE, Hunter
9/9, 3x 2/2, 3/3 on turn 3. I can easily imagine getting an hunter in the 7-10 range pretty soon in this deck. That's why Nylea is a 4-of. You really need trample to get HP dissapearing.
Also, Nykthos has no purpose in this deck. Nykthos doesn't really accelerate you for spells under 5 mana. The only use I can see for it is with Garruk post sideboard to dump your newly drawn cards. A single one might be ok for this purpose since you still have 19 green sources and can't have multiples of the legendary land. Edit: Nykthos only shines with X spells (Polukranos, Mistcutter Hydra). There are mistcutter hydras in the side too but in the matchups where this is sided in (blue) you won't have much devotion with Supreme Verdict.
So here are my answers for some anticipated questions
Q:Why four Nykthos, its legendary stupid! A:Tapping one Nykthos for a large quantity of mana and then dropping another and repeating is a very effective ramp, allowing for a large Mistcutter Hydra or multiple large plays in one main phase
Q:Why so much enchantment/artifact hate in the sideboard? A:It seems to me that the meta right now is mostly midrange and control decks, each of which use enchantment removal and enchantment win conditions, they hurt this deck so the enchant removal is necessary.
Q:Whats the deal with Arbor Colossus main? A:I used to run him in the side, but then I started losing to all sorts of decks just because they ruled the skies. Plus a 6/6 for 5 is pretty damn good anyways, and he adds 3 devotion
Q:Why no Experiment One? A:Experiment one is great in the first few turns, but after that heis as dead of a draw as you could ever hope for.
Q: Mistcutter main, wtf? A: In my devotion centric build, mana ramp is massive, allowing Mistcutter to be insanely effective, especially late-game.

No offense meant, but you couldn't be more wrong. If you watched the SCG Open Cleveland, you probably observed the plethora of Mono green decks featured there, nearly all of them used Nykthos as their primary ramp, it allows this deck to actually work.

Actually you are both wrong.... Yes I agree that Nykthos does deserve a place in the deck.... Im not sold on 4 places though...and to be honest if you would re-check the decklists from the SCG Open in Cleveland then you would see that out of the two Mono-Green decklists that made the top 10 they combined for only 1 total copy of Nykthos between the two.... In my opinion 1 does not equal a plethora..... Like I said I do like your decklist and I really like the Shrine to Nyx in it as well but Im not sold on 4x copies
Thats true, but watching the matches themselves, Nykthos was the reason they won most of their games. I wish I had a link to the matches I was thinking of.
EX: They were way behind, often staring down some sort of superior field, all of the sudden they drop Nykthos and the game changed directions completely.
EDIT: Still don't think I would go down to any lower than three copies of the shrine, it seems too crucial.
