In the last article of Ben Bleiweiss, General Manager at Starcitygames, he reveal 5 predictions about Modern Master. First one, modern staples in MM will not drop... no suprise there but is prediction #2 is realy interesting. Copied words for words:
Prediction #2: Thoughtseize will be in M14. The Shadowmoor/Eventide filter land lans will be in Theros block.
Lets cross our finger and hope he is right.
The article is only availainble via the mobile app at the moment.
Are these predictions based upon anything, such as patterns in the past or whispers behind closed doors? Or is it just wild speculation being pulled out of thin air?
I read that as "We at starcity are not lowering prices of modern staples from modern masters and since we at starcity regulate all magic the gathering prices, staples will not drop, blah blah... I'm going to go eat an infant."
i will not post all the article here but is explanations make sense, i agree with you on the first one, SCG always hype the price but the second one is regarding a quote from Aaron Forsythe :
"I made a big deal early in the format's life that not only were we allowed to reprint the staple cards of the format, but that we actively planned to do so. A good bit of that rhetoric was anchored in the fact that I knew the ten "shocklands" were slated to appear in Return to Ravnica and Gatecrash; similarly, a couple other big Modern cards are slated to show up in other Standard-legal sets down the line."
a couple other big Modern cards are slated to show up in other Standard-legal sets down the line."
"Down the line" is such vague language. It could this summer, a year from now, or 5 years from now. I just wish Forsythe could be a little less vague in what he means. Yeah, I know, company policies, insider trading, trade secrets, blah blah blah keeps him from giving more details. And to think there are at least 2 others that have to go through what developers say in a public forum w/ a fine-toothed comb to make sure nothing can be taken the wrong way or that too much information is accidently given out.
This was known, and Bleiweiss has stated this already on this very board (somewhere in the 1 million or so pages of the Modern Masters thread). That said, it is certainly nothing more than speculation based on sound theory. One that anyone with half a brain could make (not saying Bleiweiss has only half a brain).
Since it is the one blatantly obvious card left out of MM, it is very clear that Thoughtseize is indeed coming back somewhere between 4 months and 1 year, 1 year and a half. Is it coming back in M14? Possibly, but Theros/Born/Jouney are just as likely. Ben is saying it WILL come back in M14, and that is just speculation. If it does come back in the near future, M14 is indeed the most likely, but it could be Theros block just as fine.
As for the filterlands, that is completely baseless. Blocks don't usually have 10 duals (the shocks are the exception that confirms this), these duals don't even need reprinting *that* badly. It is possible that they are in Theros, yes, but if they are not, we can speculate that they are in the next block, or the next, or the next, etc. We can do the same with the Horizon Canopy cycle, or painlands, or Onslaught fetches, or basically anything that is remotely reasonable.
I don't have access to the article right now, but to me he is taking a likely thing for fact, and a possible but not very likely thing as very likely. I wouldn't put my money on either prediction.

While I do agree that this is all baseless, to the point that you made about blocks not having 10 duals...Wizards/Maro have commented on this recently (since RTR/GTC/DGM were released) saying that they were trying to shy away from only printing either enemy or ally colored duals in a set and instead try to print more cycles of 10 in new sets.
Like I said before though, this is still baseless and I personally can see no reason why they would print filters over any other cycle (or perhaps a new cycle).
Have a helicopter drop you off out front. Light your cigar with a small Indonesian boy holding a black lotus. Then bust out a craw wurm deck with no sleeves. Raw dog shuffle, loose terribly, flip the table, leave in a hovercraft.
I do not see Thoughtsieze getting into M14 because new players do not like to pay life for their spells. That is why Pain lands went out and check lands came in.

yeah for me it will be in theros block
M14 alread has some money cards in
i really don't see it in
This won't happen. Doesn't make any sense in a core set. If fetch lands are not appropriate for a core set, I don't see why a discard spell with a life drawback is.

This is an apples and oranges comparison. Paying life is a large part of Black's theme, and is why Sign in Blood has continued to see print repeatedly. Black has also had cards printed such as Xathrid Demon, among others in the Core Set. There's a big difference between players not liking taking damage for tapping lands for mana, and paying life in a color that uses it is regularly as an additional cost.
Again, comparing lands - whether it's fetchlands or painlands - to life loss from Thoughtseize is rather silly. A cycle of 5 to 10 cards that all require taking damage in a Core Set, on cards that every player needs for their mana base versus Thoughtseize? There's no valid comparison to draw here.
i REALLY hate when people say that crap, "new players don't like x"
you DONT work for wizards, stop acting like you do.
New players aren't morons. We were all there once, it's a bunch of crap and means nothing, so stop saying it.
They're quoting the reason Wizards removed Painlands from the Core Set right in that MaRO and others have said before that new players don't like paying life... but that's in the context of tapping lands for mana. Several users here are misconstruing the context of the life loss argument to draw their own conclusions. There's just simply no correlation between the likeliness of Thoughtseize getting printed in a Core Set and Wizards ceasing to print damaging mana lands in Core Sets.
I read his statement as "We here at SCG with our intense control over Magic's core price-range are going to wring Modern Masters for every penny, and make sure prices stay strictly over what they should be."

Was this the same company that bought out everyone's Scalding Tarns, raising the price overnight? Yeah...
Also let's please make thread titles less misleading!

Amen.
And Ben's first prediction is not only obvious but goes to show just how bad (or how good) his "price predictions" possibly are. He's saying that a massive short-term burst of singles coming into a market that is way, way softer than Standard and are all REPRINTS will not affect the market?HUH, WHAT? Not trying to pick-on/single-out but he's going to look like an absolute tool or genius in about four months. At least we'll all have new fodder for our signatures here?
It's an instant speed 5/5 trampler for 4. Wtf do you people want seriously? It has applications in populate/ above the curve beats decks, or in Bant control/ flash. I seriously think anyone mad at this card for any reason other than losing an attacker to instant speed wurm, should go home and make their own awesome card game and leave the rest of us alone.

They said they are moving away from supporting only allied-colors when it comes to duals, not that every time there's a dual land cycle, they are going to put all 10 within the same set/block. Innistrad has 5 corelands, while M13 has the other 5. Zendikar had 5 enemy lands, Scars had 5 allied lands (so that every color pair had one multi-land, but not all equal). This is the model they have been going with. They didn't say we are getting multi lands in chunks of 10 pieces of the same cycle, just that they will support all pairs equally when it comes to manafixing (so, basically, they have said nothing really).
The filterlands are sketchy at best, they deal with hybrid mana (even if only in cost) and are horrible in multiples (not just painful/slow as multiple shocks/core lands, but flat-out unplayable). It's more likely they give us Horizon Canopy and co. or Nimbus Maze and co. (I hope not, Maze is horrible).
Prediction #2: Thoughtseize will be in M14. The Shadowmoor/Eventide filter land lans will be in Theros block.

Can this be moved to speculation?
