In today's column about the updated Planeswalker Points, there's an image for the 20th Anniversay of Magic. It looks like it could be new art for Akroma's Vengeance in FTV (Since it was part of the G/W Slide deck that won Worlds in Onslaught/Mirrodin Standard). I would link the art, but I'm mobile at the moment.
Almost anything can be sanctioned. A 4 man EDH can be a sanctioned. It's a catch all types of events.
But it's a store that has to sanction it, right? I can't just throw a draft in my backyard and call it a "sanctioned draft," can I?
Sorry if these questions sound odd, it's just I've never heard the term "sanctioned casual event" before and it sounds like an oxymoron to me. Casual to me is "kitchen table" Magic but "sanctioned" sounds like it has to be official to me. So, it's officially unofficial? Or Unofficially official? Is an FNM a "sanctioned casual event?" I'm just confused...
Dear moderator, look at the original art, and at this art again and tell me how this illustration could fit ANY other card.
Akroma is unmistakable, she's got the sword and gems and even the blue "tail" of fabric. The pose of Akroma herself and surrounding soldiers being wiped out are also a very clear reference to the original art.
The overuse of white in the background and high contrast suggest it will look better in foil, hence perfect for a FTV art.
This is the rumor mill, and this illustration given my the mother ship is considered speculation ?? I humbly beg to differ and let anyone make their own opinion there.
It could be an angel paying tribute to Akroma by looking like her, or it could be a spell featuring Akroma. It isn't confirmed.
Good point. It was the better mechanic of that year that made into a competitive archtype (Slide). Plus Akroma is one of the most iconic Legends in Magic (she even got time shifted, colorshifted).
Would be tonnes better than getting an Astral Slide definitely.

Think of it as a way for Wizards of the Coast and your local gaming store encouraging the casual crowd to pack up their Kitchen Table and put it in a brick-and-mortar store. Many local gaming stores (LGS) have special times specifically allotted for such types of gaming.
If I remember right, this started around the time that WotC first started printing products aimed at the casual crowd - like Planechase, Archenemy, and most recently embracing (and renaming) Commander. There is an achievement on Planeswalker Points specifically for casually sanctioned events.
Another common use of this designation is the Open Dueling side events at prereleases, targeted at the player who wants to be involved but isn't quite ready to/doesn't want to compete.
On the main topic - That art is excellent. Akroma's Vengeance would be a sweet addition to to FTV (although Exalted Angel foil alt art would be my pick from that deck if I had my druthers). I still have R/W Slide built and played with it the other night for funsies - excited for this possible reprint!
Red should be burn, Goblins, Dragons, draw/discard, and Standard-unplayable 5CMC cards with insane, lengthy effects that take 10 minutes to figure out what they do and another 20 to actually make their effects work on the field.

i disagree, when i re-started magic in the summer preceding mirrodin there were few cards less iconic than akroma's vengeance and exalted angel
Magic eternal scrub
Older Magic as a Board Game: Panglacial Wurm , Mill
Best Standard of all time was "Scars/12/Innistrad"
Fav Cards of all time: Geist of Saint Traft; Kaalia of the Vast

Is it possible that's it's just Akroma straight up? Akroma's Vengeance always seemed pretty jank to me but I'm far from a good player
Decks I am playing:
taking suggestions (Legacy)
Elf Company GW (Modern)
Abbot Aggro R (Standard)
Maralen of the Mornsong B(Commander)

That's definitely Akroma. Best example would be the sleeves that match color and everything.
