On the other hand, Extended kept prices in check because some cards unusable outside of this format would rotate one day. Now with Modern, everything is just so ridiculously expensive I've been retreating mostly to limited play, even though I'm financially comfortable.
Modern is the fixed extended, they just decided to call it a different name. We'll still have good memories of the format. Keeping it around was just stupid.

You where more likely to get a Legacy Tribal / Prismatic game than a extended one on MTGO.
Modern just feels like a cleaner format. Sure it has some birthing problems, but people who remember thopter depths games or hypergenesis will forgive modern it slightly ridiculous ban list.
Extended used to be my favorite format back when I started going to my local store on a regular basis, circa 2000. I thought Standard had too small a card pool to choose from - which is kinda funny, since my favorite constructed format has since become Block Constructed.
I have many good memories of playing stuff like ScepterChant, DracoExplosion, and Winter Orb White Weenie back in the day.
I have some good memories of playing The Rock and Oath in Extended way back when Spiritmonger was still considered "broken"; but, that's as far as the nostalgia goes.
I wonder if in 10 years we'll see a "Moderner" format With just stuff from like 2012 onwards or something
Could be, but modern was really put into existence in order for Wizards to have an "old" format that they could print support for. They have essentially stated they won't break the reserved list and therefor can't support Legacy in the long term to prevent it from dying. They know they can support modern however which is why they created it.

As someone who stopped playing during Judgement started playing again this year (perfectly missing the window on basically all of Modern's card base), I would love that.
There were a couple of years where Extended was just so wide open. It was an incredibly diverse and balanced format where you had everything from Goblin Agro decks, Rock Decks, blue control decks, various types of combo decks, etc. There was an interesting deck for anyone out there to take and make their own.
I hope one day Modern achieves this level of balance, but I just can't see it happening. There's just so many powerful sets and so many cards that are just inherently powerful for everything to fall back into check.
The whole Extended issue is just nuts. I'm not surprised this happened at all and wasn't really a fan of the format but I was excited when it was announced as an FNM format. External forces were working against it though. SCG gained a firm grasp on NA's Legacy scene and dueling communities of playtesters were trying out prototype eternal formats to "improve" it. I prefer it to Standard because like most people I like having a large card pool but Wizards loves making money and so nothing is replacing StandardLimited as the flagship format.
Fixed that for you.
Never played a single game of Extended, just found a new LGS that is running an Extended FNM next week, so I'll give it a go before it vanishes.
Perhaps in another 7 years when Modern is significantly different they'll reintroduce Extended.
This is my thought. Eventually Modern will have like 15 blocks, so there will probably be a need for a format that is larger than standard, but smaller than modern.
Anyways, It's been a long time since I last played extended. I remember when the format was pretty much just play anything in your collection, including dual lands. The next rotation was what I remember the most though, Tempest through Kamigawa was pretty sweet. I might be biased since I was a huge goblin fan during onslaught, and being able to add goblin lackey and recruiter to the deck for a little white was great, then they got banned -_-
While I know that Modern had for all purposes supplanted Extended as a sanctionable format before this official announcement, it leaves me to wonder about how much support Wizards actually gave to Extended.
For example, would Extended have been a viable format moving forward if they did not limit it to the previous four years, but kept it at seven?
Would Extended have been a viable format with more card support like an Extended Masters?
Would Extended have been a viable format if they had more balanced Standard decks for a number of years in a row, rather than dominance based on specifically pushed mechanics like Affinity, Cascade, and Jace, the Mind Sculptor?
With the love that Modern receives, it is no wonder that it is more successful than Extended, but I will always wonder if Extended really deserved more of a chance.
Wow, big news. I do not remember this ever happening (not counting block limited/constructed).
I'm sure there'll be a few complainers, but in the end, I doubt much will be missed. I had almost entirely forgotten about extended. I thought extended was Legacy, just under a different name.
What they retired extended? Now im sad! How could you wizards? My favorite format of all time and you cancel it? (Sarcasm). I think i saw this one coming, no one plays extended and not many care to with modern around!
This is my thought. Eventually Modern will have like 15 blocks, so there will probably be a need for a format that is larger than standard, but smaller than modern.
I agree with you. Extended "died" when they cut it down to 4 blocks. When it was larger like Modern, it was an interesting format.
I hope that eventually it does come back. As Modern grows I think the demand will be there for a format that's in between the size of Modern and Standard. I don't see it happening for at least another 3 or 4 years, but I think in time it very well could return.
I never played extended, so I shall not miss it, and that is likely why it is being retired; it was the least-played of all the M:tG formats. As long as modern and legacy shall continue to exist, I shall not at all be bothered by the retiring of extended.

At least they still support Vintage.
Edit: Oh, and that extended was kind of cool to watch, the new age extended just sucked.
I have many good memories of playing stuff like ScepterChant, DracoExplosion, and Winter Orb White Weenie back in the day.
Let a previously great format RIP.
