You forgot Scavenging Ooze, unknown Garruk and still 100 cards remaining. And besides, do you want all the good cards to be mythic so they are more valuable? I like that both ooze and mutavault are rare
Actually, instead of doing what MaRo usually does, which is apologize for a card after it rotated for being too good/too bad (ie. Bitterblossom) he went ahead and said Liliana of the Dark Realms wasn't what they hoped while she's still legal. So instead of reprinting a well-received Liliana that is right now pushing $40+, they give us another year of that crap, and a third year of Jace, Memory Adept (don't get me wrong, I don't mind him). Scavenging Ooze will be interesting, certainly, and there might be some staples in the missing 100, but with no rare duals and a ton of jank mythics, they're not really giving a whole lot of incentive to buy a box. Like worse-than-Dragon's-Maze kind of don't buy a box.
Like another guy said, though, it's a core set, so meh. Lot of missed opportunity so far, though.
WOTC: "Hey guys, guess what..!! we are bringing back Slivers in the CORE set.!!"
The crowd goes mad..!!
WOTC: " Ummmm...yeaaah, but we are not giving you access to duals, so you can't play a 5 color Sliver deck.."
WTF?
I'm pretty sure that's not a slip-up at all. We currently have the best mana base we've ever seen in standard. Do you really think having that and slivers in the format for a full 15 months is a good idea? Because I don't.
My guess is that they either decided that since they're restricting the mana base, they could allow slivers, or (less likely) since they're introducing slivers, they had do restrict the mana base. They'll still be perfectly playable, just not completely effortless all year like they will be for a while until rotation.

Not having duals in the core just means we won't have dual lands for limited. Once rotation comes around, we'll still have the shock lands plus what ever dual lands they print in Theros.
Not confirmed. I assumed from WotC's current stance about mythic land, it's previous printing and it's power level.
Also helps that it was specifically called out as not being a mythic-level card years ago. (editing out the parts that confuse people...)
We've also decided that there are certain things we specifically do not want to be mythic rares....Some examples...would be cycles of dual lands and cards like Mutavault or Char.

Is there still space in the number crunch for a mythic sliver?
Yes. A multicoloured card will be first in the artifacts part, making it number 204 in the crunch and Accorder's Shield number 205. At least that's how it was with Nicol Bolas in M13.
The pattern for the mythic slots is five planeswalkers, five creatures in iconic creature types (edit: one for each colour, so no sliver there), and five "miscellaneous" cards. There is still an open misc slot. Se my sig for more.
Still hoping for Misdirection to show up. Aaron said before in his twitter that it was originaly on M13, but "Delver was too strong to have more free spells".

No dual lands make Magic players whiny. They forget when allied fetchlands in Theros.

Seriously, how would you have a core set without duals without then printing some major duals in Theros? To me, this confirms fetchlands as a way to sell Theros.
I also expect Thoughtseize within the year, which means Sell, Sell, Sell...
Also, Mutavault and Scavenging Ooze somewhat makes up for not reprinting Thundermaw Hellkite.

Citation needed.
Also, plenty of people play this Liliana. No, she's not tournament level, but I've seen her run at lots of FNMs. Some people like having a non-$50 card to play with.
On the matter of lack of dual lands, my opinion of it going forward is to do with them in the Core sets the same thing they did with the shocklands in DGM: Put them in the land slot and have them show up as rare lands.
Just, you know, with a slightly higher frequency than the once in a blue moon that they did with DGM.
I find that hard to believe, since the Vivid lands CIPT and the checks+shocks almost never do, but I didn't play back then, so I'll just have to take your word for it.

I guess you're talking about the overall set value or satisfaction level. In many other ways, that's a bad case of apples and oranges. Different colours, different functions in different deck strategies, different spots on the curve. That's like a store clerk saying "Sorry, we're out of toothpaste, but we have a special on shoe polish if you're interested".

Reading some older posts on Blogatog MaRo addressed the Titans showing up in M11 and M12: they figured that popular creatures like the Titans only showing up once would lead to dissapointment so they made them show up in the following Core Set. From the sound of it (or the way I read that post) I think they realized it was a mistake and that this may be why Thundermaw Hellkite does not seem to be coming back: it was an epic powerhouse for a bit.
The thing that I think they may have missed is that the cycle aspect of the Titans was a big factor in "player fatigue" about them; it didn't help that some of them were busted though

It's the fact that some of them were busted, and also the sheer number of mythic slots they took up. It made both sets feel the same.
Personally, I wish Thundermaw was coming back just to justify the price. It can always come back though.
Glad to see we get the worst of the Jaces back for the (first ever) third reprinting.
Oh wait, no, I'm not, and to add to that we have mediocre Ajani and bad Lilianna to back it up.. well, here's to hoping Garruk and Chandra are good this time 'round..

In other news, Mutavault is exciting news!
To be fair none of the Jace's are bad. It's also up for debate whether or not Jace AoT is better than MA. MA has had a bigger impact on the standard meta up to this point IMO.
How do we know bad Liliana and Co are back? I'm really disappointed because I was hoping MonoB control could maybe be a thing, or at least a heavy black control strategy.

Ajani and Lilliana are likely to be reprinted because Jace v3, Chandra v3, and Garruk v2 have had two years in standard. So comparatively Ajani v3 and Lilliana v3 are likely to get two years in standard as well. But for all I know, Wizards could print Ajani Vengeant and Lilliana of the Veil just to completely shake things up.

Oh, I just noticed that MTGS had them in the 2014 spoiler, didn't know if there was more confirmation than that.
Most of it was just card numbers and have been updated. However, there's a few names and confirmations.
#33 is not called Shandalar Paladin
#36 and #186 are apparently not Slivers
Three lands, Mutavault and shimmering grotto are in.
Liliana, Jace and Ajani are their M13 incarnations
Garruk is now "Garruk, Caller of Beasts"
Thx, I've processed all the numbers from the spoiler thread now.
Some observations:
The case of the Shandalar Knight is very strange indeed
Kalonian Tusker #181 had another number than originally deduced (#182)
Out are: Guardian Lions, Healer of the Pride, Serra Avatar, Serra Avenger, all Rings, Staff of Nin
The Slivers not on that position, or no extra Slivers period?
Other question: is Angelic Wall now really confirmed?

Though, I've also said tribal wouldn't be a theme in Theros, and Mutavault kinda points at the opposite. I guess we'll have to wait and see.
I'd say that the inclusion of Mutavault is related to slivers being in the set, and it says nothing about Theros.
Let this great clan rest in peace (2001-2011)
