THAT SAID some jobs you may want to consider that would get you moving to new and exotic places on a regular basis: Navy, merchant marine, any traveling sales job, independent contractor (I'm an independent contractor and freelancer and I've moved six states/different country in ten years), actor/musician, paramedic, search & rescue, journalist, photographer, filmmaker or camera crew, geographer/surveyor, translator, diplomat, social worker, anthropologist, CDC health minister or staffer, any sort of inspector or service specialist for a large geographic region's facilities or industrial centres. My dad's buddy was a ship's nurse for a cruise line and got to go everywhere in the world, every continent, every ocean.
Just think before you leap.
I'm going to add to this a bit more in the long run:
1. Invest every damn penny you earn
2. Become a millionaire by age 30-35
3. Have no children or any dependents
4. Marry well, and find someone career oriented that likes to travel (there's enough people out there now)
Turn "living cheaply" into a game, and get into a traveling profession and you can do great. I've met a number of people that just have their residence with Mom and Pops, owning several investments, and don't have a care in the world.
Why do you think most hippies today gave up and joined the capitalists? Because they discovered they can be hippies and continue their behomian life style with enough self funding.

Vincent: What'cha mean, "walk the earth"? Jules: You know, like Caine in Kung Fu, walk from place to place, meet people, get into adventures. Vincent: And how long do you intend to walk the earth? Jules: Until God puts me where he wants me to be. Vincent: And what if he don't do that?Jules: If it takes forever, then I'll walk forever. Vincent: So you decided to be a bum? Jules: I'll just be Jules, Vincent – no more, no less.
-Pulp Fiction (Quote from WikiQuote)
So, here's the short story for those people who don't want to read my life story and motivations: I want to travel around from place to place, essentially "be a bum". Should I or should I not do this? If I should, why, and how? If I shouldn't, why not?
Now, for the longer version. I'm 19 years old, and basically, I'm horribly bored. Got out of high school a year ago, working a low paying job as a post office clerk. I've always been a bit of a nomadic guy, someone who likes spontaneity and adventure. The thing is, I've also always been a pretty contented guy, with a go-with-the-flow philosophy. Unfortunately, my philosophy has gotten me to the point where I feel my life is stagnant; I'm still living at my mom's house and don't own a car, so not a lot of progress has been made since high school. I feel that going out and living as a bum for a year will quite literally jolt me out of this state, as I'll need to learn important life skills and decision making to quite literally survive. I'd also document the whole experience, because quite frankly, I think it would make an absolutely excellent story. I'm quite excited about the idea, as I'd meet plenty of new people, see interesting new places, eat new food...you know, all the benefits of traveling.
The other reason I'm so intrigued by this life is that, as the quote says, you become no one but yourself. You don't need to be any place at any given time, time almost loses it's meaning, save seasons. You are quite literally free to do almost anything you want to do; the ultimate freedom we can have on this planet is being a bum.
I should also mention that I'm not in a financial state to say, fly to Europe and take trains over there; that's also not the point, as I really do want to survive on only my wits and ingenuity for awhile.
So, my questions are, should I do this? If I do, what should I bring with me, where should I go (I live in Winnipeg, Canada), any other advice on doing such a thing. If I shouldn't, why, and are there any alternatives? Also, any experience from someone who's done such a thing would be appreciated.
Firstly, I'd like to say, I've been thinking the exact same thing, am in the exact same situation, and live in the exact same city, so this post is incredibly strange to read.
That said, go for it! The world is an incredible place, and you're only going to get to see it once. The happiest people I've met are "bums", and travel wherever they want, whenever they want. If spontaneity is something you value highly, and constant cleanliness is not, it's a hell of a way to spend your life.

Feeling constrained by your childhood settings and wanting a change of scene shouldn't trigger you to drop everything you've got and take such a risk for a challenge that you could easily find anyways.
Most people feel they want to break away when they've grown up and want to get out of the house. If you're looking for a challenge, just try moving to the next city and surviving on your own, getting a job, an apartment and food on the table WITH the resources YOU have available (money YOU have saved, contacts YOU know ie friends you could move with etc.). As a previous poster pointed out, you're never going to be at all at risk (and therefore not getting that feeling of independence) when your parents are just around the corner. Setting up a standard lifestyle on your own is a large hurdle in itself.
Then if that isn't hard enough, maybe consider other options. But give it a go first, I think you'll be surprised. I'm quite sure you won't spend the whole time sitting around bored. And if it turns out to be harder than expected, you'll thank your lucky stars you didn't jump in the deep end without testing the shallow side first.
In my opinion if you have cash, you are not a bum, you are an adventurer. Bums are poor and eat dead birds on the side of the road cuz they have no other options.
I eat dead birds at the side of the road, they call it KFC over here.
No offence, but if you want to 'jolt' yourself out of your current state in life, just try something different. If you want change, just pick up a full time, different job that offers a unique experience. Buying a bike was mentioned, you should do that as well. Take up hiking and other outdoors stuff (that is the kind of person who you describe as a "bum") like outdoor survival and just have fun.
Here's the best way to jolt yourself out of this funk.
Find the nearest forest, tell your parents you'll be back in five days, no more, no less. (preferably about 50 miles away so you have to make a bit of distance and fend for yourself. )
basic rules
I. YOU NEED THINGS
1. CELL PHONE, you need it, you'll want it, but don't use it unless it's for DIRE EMERGENCIES (like; you're going to die0
2. about 3 gallons of water, and a small bag of trail mix. Since most people can't forage, hunt, or anything of that order, it's best that you don't starve.
3. First aid kit, in case you almost die
4. a coat, it's summer now, but it can still get cold at night, and odds are, your shelters are gonna suck
5. A compass and a map. otherwise you'll be lost (a gps is nice, but a little expensive, and kind of counter intuitive)
II. RESTRICTIONS
1. No hitchhiking until day 5. No mode of transport other than what your feet can do for you until the day that you HAVE to get home.
2. No road walking. You're trying to be more capable, not a road *****. If you can't figure out the way, you get to hitchhike the last day.
3. If you arrive early, you must stay outside for the remainder, no food, water, or shelter.
If you can see any problems, tell me, but otherwise, take precautions and do it.
Or you could do what my cousin has done 3 years ago and sated his sense of adventure.
Go to Australia for 6 month's, take only the essentials with you.
Tent, Phone in case of emergenies etc.
He traveled from place to place earning a warm meal by working for it at random places.(help a farmer for a few days, work as a barkeep for a week that kind of thing)
It worked for him, maybe it can work for you.

Move to Austin, Texas, it is legal to panhandle here.
Oh, but I'll let you know now, nobody is going to give you any money. I've seen people give them change or a water or burger but it doesn't seem like a fun way to live.
Also a bad idea is to roast people for their opinion of the appropriateness of the post in question when your entire defense is based on your opinion of the appropriateness of the post.
My father did this, although he didn't quite become that "bum" that you are talking about.
He did, however go to all around Europe from Barcelona all the way to Berlin. So if you have the cash, you can take the Eurorail all around Europe. It was a fun experience to him.
In my opinion if you have cash, you are not a bum, you are an adventurer. Bums are poor and eat dead birds on the side of the road cuz they have no other options.

I would recommend joining a charity and doing some work in Africa or something. (I don't know anything about that, but I'm sure the internet does).
Or save and go by train or bus across the US (or even Canada). Motels can be pretty cheap, and by booking ahead you can get decent rates on transport.
In either case, it fulfils your desire to wander and see more, meet people and better yourself as a person. Go for up to a year (although even a month would be a vast change of pace).
The key is to not just decide one day to go out and wander, having a plan stops the whole thing descending into catastrophe, and adds way more in terms of actually doing things. From what I gather, you have a very idealistic view of this kind of thing, so just try not to let that blind you into getting stranded somewhere. I would save up and plan for 6 months - a year (however long it takes).
Also, I would highly recommend going to uni/getting more education. If you are well qualified, you can seek out a more demanding job pretty much anywhere. If, after a long trip somewhere, your wanderlust is sated and you feel you can concentrate on studies, then all the better.
In my opinion if you have cash, you are not a bum, you are an adventurer. Bums are poor and eat dead birds on the side of the road cuz they have no other options.

First, pull your head out of your rear. Being a bum isn't freedom like you seem to think. Its a terrible ordeal to endure.
You seem to have a very Hollywood, romanticized vision of being some amazing bum. Sure it works in the movies. But please don't confuse fiction and reality like that. Its like saying how good, happy and successful war is. Maybe you should compare the Iraq war to Lord of the Rings.
Real life isn't the quest you think it is. I have personally been homeless for a 3 year period of my life. During that time, I had to struggle to eat, stay warm, stay safe, and avoid trouble (especially the legal kind). While I didn't make a conscious decision to become homeless, I have recognized that certain choices I made in my life ultimately resulted in that.
During the 3 years on the streets, I was cursed, beaten, jailed, and treated with such disgust by my fellow peers (not other homeless, just other people) that I hated myself for allowing that to happen.
My advice if you do choose the "bum" life: Kill yourself ASAP. If you're gonna waste your life, do it right.
Sounds like "Into the Wild" would be an interesting read for you. Just don't get any silly ideas about surviving in the Alaskan wilderness without solid training and equipment.
As others have said, being a bum or hobo, in the strictest sense, is ill advised, if for no other reason than the danger of it all.
If you were to do something like this, I'd suggest something more in line with saving up some money, picking a place, finding work there, and make enough money till you can move on again. Rinse, repeat. Stay in inexpensive motels or, perhaps better, public campgrounds.
Exactly my thinking. The OP is a regular Alexander Super Tramp. Do what you have to, but I think being a bum is just a way to rebel against society since your afraid of reaching success. Maybe you should get professional help before you actually make the move. And I mean you should go just to get your head straight, so you won't experience this feeling by going out and being roughed up.
Also, surviving is hard and dangerous; especially alone. Make sure you have the right supplies, skills, and people to help you out.
I remember reading some short stories by Niel Gaiman. In a bunch of them, he brings up how people remain the same even when they travel to foreign lands. Now that I mention it, this theme was also kind of in the anime "Durarara!!".
On a different note, watch Durarara!!- 'tis a very good anime.
basically, it sounds like you want a life changing experience or you fear that you're going to turn into that 40 year old that lives in his mom's basement.
Rather than be a bum, I would recommend you either go to college or join the army. It sounds like you want more to your life then what you have, but being a bum won't do that. While it may sound appealing, it won't do you any benefit asides from making your life miserable.
with the army your life will be just as miserable, but it will have a better effect in the long run (college pay + cash). It can have a very profound effect on someone.
With college, you're gonna be strapped for cash for a while but it will open the doors to a better paying and a "not dead-end job". It may be prudent to say that while you're in a college dorm, unless your parents are rich, you're probably going to be living like a bum anyways (except you won't smell as bad)

Then there's also things such as transferring between the branches, such as enlisting into the Army, getting to a good rank and then transferring to a different branch of your better choosing.
A decent technical job in the Air Force, Navy, or Marines would allow you to travel and actually give some good skills.
Now, special forces like the Green Barret or Navy Seals can be interesting but if you don't do triathalons and have a deep seeded passion for it don't bother.
Overall, what he might do better with is to travel for a year and then figure out what to do. There's plenty of jobs out there suggested earlier, but in the case of responding to the military the Navy has the most travel so long as you're not in a submarine.
