I mean, most rules are just standard Mafia rules and common sense. Unfortunately, if you don't want someone to do it, you have to make it a rule. As for notable games, there are 4 listed for recommended reading in the hosting thread.

2013: Best Non-SK Neutral Performance

2015: Worst Mafia Performance (Group) - Best Read

I'm new to Mafia and plan on jumping into the next Basic now that #65 is finished. I want to read 1-2 past games (Basics or not) in their entirety before playing. Recs?

If you want to see 6 months of depression read basic 31, that game was soooooo wierd.
Also to see how a town SHOULD NOT act read basic 38. Seriously everyone who didn't want to lynch JTM day 2 (although 3 investigative roles claimed in a basic is pretty wierd)

As I understand it, thanking posts is more or less condemned as outside influences in Mafia, right? It's not specifically banned, but now that the novelty has worn off, nobody is really using/abusing them, right?
The reason I bring it up is I'm wondering if we can put them to actual use in a way that doesn't harm the games at all. Specifically, I want to use them as progress markers.
For example, I'm in a game and catching up on 50 odd posts since my last read through. But I get interrupted and need to stop midway through the process. I "thank" the last post I read, then go do whatever it is I need to do which interrupted me. When I come back later, I find the post I thanked, un-thank it and continue reading. Once I am caught up, I thank the final post in the thread so that when I next comeback, I can easily find the point where new posts start. If I make a response, then I don't need to thank any post since my last post acts as the marking post.
Basically, I want to use the thank you capability purely as a means of keeping track of what the last post I read was. If used exclusively for this purpose, I don't see why it should be a problem to thank and un-thank posts. I think un-thanking posts, and to a lesser degree thanking posts, is only a problem in Mafia if they have some connection to the material contained within the posts. But purely as a marker, there's nothing to be gained from trying to interpret someone's pattern of thanking/un-thanking beyond possibly determining how often they read the thread.
What does anyone/everyone else think about this? I've just asked the Mod if I can adopt this policy of use for Hunger Games Mafia (and don't have a response yet), but I'm wondering about a more widespread use of it than just one person in one game.

I dislike it because it provides information in a way that can be modified, and is time-sensitive. One player in the game might be able to verify that you are doing a reread by seeing your thanks go up and down while you are doing them, while another, who is away during that time period and comes back later, would not be able to confirm it. Or, alternatively: if this system is allowed, then it could become harder for scum to lie about what they are doing, because there is a way of tracking their rereads that they would then need to spoof.
The gripping hand really is the fact that everything else in a mafia game - every way in which you interact with it - is public and unalterable. You can see exactly when a given player said a given thing. You can know that he didn't say anything else, or add to or remove anything from his post. Thanks do not allow this. Unless a mod wants to specifically allow thanks in his game and designs it with this in mind, I believe they should not be used.
If you want to track your rereads, just write it down somewhere. A text file will do. "As of 890" or whatever. It isn't hard, and it doesn't have any other impact on the game. Thanks might.
The problem in that is how do the other players know its just someone marking their place and not a scum team trying to communicate w/o daytalk?
How is that a problem? Why aren't you accusing them of using a QT thread? Why aren't you accusing them of having exchanged phone numbers and talking to each other?
The simple fact of the matter is that forum Mafia is a game where integrity matters. If you want to cheat, nobody can stop you. but what's the point?
I don't see why anyone should assume thank you's are being used inappropriately if they aren't already assuming Mafia is cheating by using other methods as well.
Sure, IF someone gets caught, they should be punished, but that's true regardless of how they are cheating. I would think any halfway intelligent cheater would use something MUCH easier and MUCH harder to detect, like QT threads.
If it is stated up front what use of Thank you's is "appropriate", then how is it a problem? Or more specifically, why is it more of a problem than anything else?

How is that any different from someone simply checking who is reading the thread at a given time? The only difference I see is that Thank you's are actually MORE transparent since some people elect to hide when they are online.
Or, alternatively: if this system is allowed, then it could become harder for scum to lie about what they are doing, because there is a way of tracking their rereads that they would then need to spoof.
Huh? How so?
Nobody is suggesting that you HAVE to use Thank you's when re-reading. I'm only suggesting that you can use them for that purpose. Anyone that didn't want to would be perfectly within their right to continue playing exactly as they are now.

This simply is NOT TRUE, as I pointed out above.
Nothing about my suggestion for using Thanks would allow a player to alter ANYTHING they've said or done in a game.
Currently you can see if someone is actively reading the thread if they aren't hiding their online presence, but you have to be there right then to see it. Using Thank you's would provide the EXACT SAME type of info that that does. Why do you feel one is acceptable but not the other?
If you want to track your rereads, just write it down somewhere. A text file will do. "As of 890" or whatever. It isn't hard, and it doesn't have any other impact on the game. Thanks might.
Which would still be available to anyone that wanted to do that.
If it is stated up front what use of Thank you's is "appropriate", then how is it a problem? Or more specifically, why is it more of a problem than anything else?
If that is the only permissible use, then congratulations: you've just invented a way to prove someone is doing a reread of the thread. You just ask them to do the Thanks on the way through, and if you see the thanks: they actually did it! Makes it harder for scum who just want to pretend to reread the thread to pull that off.
How is that any different from someone simply checking who is reading the thread at a given time? The only difference I see is that Thank you's are actually MORE transparent since some people elect to hide when they are online.
Not that much different at all, but being visible when reading is an automatic process, instead of a manual one.
Nobody is suggesting that you HAVE to use Thank you's when re-reading. I'm only suggesting that you can use them for that purpose. Anyone that didn't want to would be perfectly within their right to continue playing exactly as they are now.
Except that refusing a reasonable request to use an available system would very likely be interpreted as scummy.

But they would be Thanking and unThanking posts. You essentially want to be able to make a post saying "Am rereading, have got up to 1234, will continue from there soon" - and then delete that post once you start rereading. This means that some players in the game may get the chance to see it and others not, and that is a bad thing.
Which would still be available to anyone that wanted to do that.
It is. And you are asking for a system that will be of incredibly dubious benefit - you save, what, ten seconds compared to having a text file open and noting the post number? A minute compared to making the "Am rereading" post I mentioned above? In exchange for that, you want a system in place that can prove what a player's activities in reading the thread are. I do not believe this is a good thing.

Why do you assume that everyone only uses one computer to do everything on? How will a text file on my computer at home help me remember what post I was on when I pick my re-read back up at work?
I don't doubt that someone is going to come up with a use for this at some point, and your system, if allowed, might interfere with that.
That's a bad argument. What if a Mod wants to change ANYTHING from the normal way it is done? Does the game collapse? Or do the rules during that game get modified out of the norm?

So e-mail it to yourself. I've done it a number of times. Or use a pen and write it down RL.

FOS for fearmongering.
No, the game will not collapse. Mods change rules around all the time in specialty games, but occasionally it causes problems when people (for instance) forget that a self-vote is suicide in that game, instead of just one vote. This might cause a similar problem to happen.
That is just a minor addition to the main thrust of my argument, though, which is that a rules change to allow people to Thank in this situation is not needed (there are several other options available, including writing down a post number or just posting in-thread) and could theoretically cause problems. And it's mostly that first point that turns me off it - if there was more of an upside, I'd be willing to see it get tried out instead of worrying about something that might happen. But the upside here is so small that I don't see why we should make an exception to a (generally needed) blanket rule.
What if there was a Chrome extension that handled certain mafia tasks you think are important? Marking posts as important, coloring known scum/town usernames, etc. This is something I'm brainstorming specifically because Ahlysis brought up his question about the thank system.
Is this something mods would have no issues with, as long as the tool was restricted to bookkeeping tasks?

I think that would be nifty. I currently use a note tool that allows me to more or less put post-it-notes on pages so that I can make notes about players right on the thread. I don't see any issue in bookkeeping tools.

That might actually get me to switch from Firefox and give Chrome a try.
Right now I'm working on the boilerplate and the beginnings of a framework. This might take awhile but I'll try to have something out in the Chrome extension gallery early next week (no promises).
What I've got planned for the initial release:
Marking games you want to track.
Marking important posts.
Marking players as town or scum.
Planned:
Notes on players
Notes in general
Links to QT topics
Pie in the sky (but might happen one day)
Vote counting
New posts notification
If you have any ideas for things you'd like to see please let me know. I can't promise that everything will make it in nor when certain things will make it in. I plan on putting this out on Github once I get the first functional version so anybody can hack away at it.
How about a +1/-1 tracker for townie vs. scum points that auto sums the current total next to the player's name?
And a highlight function that allows you to highlight parts of a post and leave them (would make sifting through walls of text easier if I could just highlight the major points).
How about a tracker that automatically reports the last post number from the previous time you viewed the thread and updates it with the last post number from the current visit. Maybe a rotating 2 number queue that pushes the new last post number on top so that the numbers just cycle themselves each time you view the thread.
An additional ability to manually set the current last post number so that the next time you view the thread it has that number moved to the #2 spot (with the new last post taking top spot) would also be awesome.

Update on Chrome extension:
I've got basic functionality done. You can star threads and individual posts and mark users as town, scum, or mod. Next up is notes; once that's done I'll put up the code on Github.
Before I can make a release I need some images. If anybody here has some graphic design experience and would like to contribute here is what I need:
Extension icon 128x128. Should obviously be mafia related.
Star and unstar icons. They don't have to be stars necessarily, but they should convey a similar meaning to Chrome's bookmark feature. Every post needs an icon so the user knows where to click. A starred post's icon should stand out.
I'm currently using placeholder graphics for the extension icon and the stars (which are actually taken from Google Code) so I can't release with those icons. I can't pay anything so this would definitely be a labor of love for the community. I don't need anything fancy; just detailed enough to associate it with mafia.
I've looked through the suggestions here and I'll see what I can do in the future. I actually like the points tracker idea a lot. Shouldn't be too difficult to implement either.
I used them on the League sign-up sheet. If I got your name and added you to the list, I thanked the post. This way I could track if I missed anyone and people could let me know that I hadn't thanked them.
Using thanking for a sign-up thread for confirmation that someone is "/in" is a good idea, I think.

If I have time (and nobody has created them before me) I'll maybe play around and see if I can create something (shouldn't be too hard).
For the "star and unstar" what size do you want them?
Size should be somewhat small. Current size of placeholder images is 15x15 and that's about a pixel too large each way. 14x14 should work. Of course it shouldn't be too small or it will be difficult to hit.
Basically the icon appears in three places:
To the right of the thread title on the thread page.
To the right of the thread title on the thread listings page next to the attachment icon.
The the right of the post number in the top right corner of each post.
These locations can of course be adjusted.
Progress update: Notes are now working but are really wrong on postbit v3 (does anyone even use postbit v3?). I need to investigate and see about moving the note location.
Notes are attached per post. There is no limit to note size but the input box is one line for now. Notes can be deleted by removing all text.
Once I get the postbit v3 issue worked out I'll throw this up on github.

Basic implementation done. Right now I'm just using text for + and -. Should switch to images just to make the feature more discoverable. Any ideas for an upper and lower limit? Would anybody like the total colorized?

I think a total colorization would be nice with blue for +, red for -, and black for 0.

Anyone a good enough coder to find the backdoor he put in to see everyone's notes?
Type in the Konami code.

I really like the mafia fireballs at the bottom. Would it be possible to place those in a circle like the MTGS logo? I figure since this extension works just here on Sally it would be cool to give it a similar look. I'll make sure that's okay to riff on the MTGS branding before a release.

I've capped the point tracker to -5 and +5. Capped values are colored appropriately. Marking a user also colorizes the town/scum picker. I thought about coloring the name, but since the name itself is colored by the site skin it seemed better to leave that alone.

I would change it to +-25. +-5 is too small of a variation personally.
+-25 with numbers over abs(20) being colorized. I'll look into gradual colorization just to be fancy.
EDIT: Just for my own curiosity I worked out a way to have a page action popup get information from the currently showing tab. This was a lot more difficult than I think it should have been but at least it works. Not sure what such a page action popup would be used for at the moment, but if anybody has any ideas I'm all ears.

If 25 different shades is too much I would suggest just having the color get brighter each 5.

Came up with something even better. A slider that's blue on one side and red on the other. Allows you to be a bit more gradual with your ratings. Looks pretty slick.
Never mind. Had some other issues. Reverting back to text for now.

Any thought as to having a hall of fame for specific defining games on here? Or at least an easy way to show why certain rules exist....?

Probably any basic besides #65 is fine, imo.
As another player from #65 I have to agree.
I would only recommend it if you have a lot of time on your hand and would like to know what NOT to do.
Also as Iso mentioned right before, there are notable games listed for recommended reading in the hosting thread.
I'll second that one, it was a really good game.
Also if Iso is going to be in your game read one of Basic 52, 53, or 62.

And speaking of...
Your Day 2 is now on top of my "things not to do as town" list
The reason I bring it up is I'm wondering if we can put them to actual use in a way that doesn't harm the games at all. Specifically, I want to use them as progress markers.

Which would still be available to anyone that wanted to do that.

She knows why.
I'm pretty sure I gave EXACTLY what purpose I'm intending to use them for just a few posts up!
If that is the only permissible use, then congratulations: you've just invented a way to prove someone is doing a reread of the thread. You just ask them to do the Thanks on the way through, and if you see the thanks: they actually did it! Makes it harder for scum who just want to pretend to reread the thread to pull that off.
Not that much different at all, but being visible when reading is an automatic process, instead of a manual one.
Also, think about this:
I don't doubt that someone is going to come up with a use for this at some point, and your system, if allowed, might interfere with that.
Why do you assume that everyone only uses one computer to do everything on? How will a text file on my computer at home help me remember what post I was on when I pick my re-read back up at work?

Planned:
Pie in the sky (but might happen one day)
If you have any ideas for things you'd like to see please let me know. I can't promise that everything will make it in nor when certain things will make it in. I plan on putting this out on Github once I get the first functional version so anybody can hack away at it.

And a highlight function that allows you to highlight parts of a post and leave them (would make sifting through walls of text easier if I could just highlight the major points).
An additional ability to manually set the current last post number so that the next time you view the thread it has that number moved to the #2 spot (with the new last post taking top spot) would also be awesome.

I've got basic functionality done. You can star threads and individual posts and mark users as town, scum, or mod. Next up is notes; once that's done I'll put up the code on Github.
Before I can make a release I need some images. If anybody here has some graphic design experience and would like to contribute here is what I need:

Very excited for this.
Basically the icon appears in three places:
Progress update: Notes are now working but are really wrong on postbit v3 (does anyone even use postbit v3?). I need to investigate and see about moving the note location.
Notes are attached per post. There is no limit to note size but the input box is one line for now. Notes can be deleted by removing all text.
Once I get the postbit v3 issue worked out I'll throw this up on github.

Once there's actual images and any large bugs are squashed I'll package this up and put it on the Chrome web store for much easier installation.
Now to take a look at implementing extra stuff.

@Zionite

Looks pretty slick.Never mind. Had some other issues. Reverting back to text for now.
