Hour of Devastation continues to settle, as the Box EV, even discounting the Invocation slot, stays at a respectable $85. None of the set's mythic rares are seeing an exceptional amount of play, with Nicol Bolas, the God Pharaoh never finding a solid home, and The Scarab God only showing up as the occasional splash in Temur Energy. Indeed, it seems that Commander popularity may be the sole thing buoying any cards in the set at all, as the only three other cards not to dip in price - The Locust God, Neheb, the Eternal, and Torment of Hailfire - aren't seeing appreciable Standard play, nor is Bolas, the set's most expensive card. Yet all four are popular in Commander. When even Earthshaker Khenra, a four-of in Standard's most popular deck, drops by almost 10%, there's not much chance anything is going to go up. Barring an unforeseen breakthrough deck in the next couple of weeks, expect this set to continue to decline across the board.

In contrast with Hour of Devastation, Amonkhet is fairly stable, with the box EV declining by less than a single dollar, with only eight cents of that being in the rare slot. A few cards are shifting, but it's mostly corrections as the meta solidifies. Hazoret the Fervent is down a dollar and change, approaching the price she was at the beginning of the month before she reached her post-Pro Tour highs. Regal Caracal is this week's biggest gainer, likely in anticipation of the Commander 2017 Cat tribal deck, "Feline Ferocity" that released on August 25th. Glorybringer and Liliana, Death's Majesty went up a bit, as Mono-Red Aggro and Black Zombies continue to be two of the strongest decks in the format. The red "bicycle" lands, Canyon Slough and Sheltered Thicket went up slightly as Red-based aggro decks experiment with ways to avoid flooding out, and non-red "bicycle" lands dipped slightly, along with control and midrange cards like Kefnet, the Mindful and Rhonas, the Indomitable, as aggro continues to dominate the format.

Invocations continue to do fairly well, with three separate cards seeing double-digit price increases this week: Wrath of God, Damnation, and Aggravated Assault. These cards all spiked rather suddenly, with their prices being stable or even dropping over the past several weeks, only to jump by huge amounts in the past several days, indicative of a buyout. This is especially likely in the case of Aggravated Assault, which gained around 60% of its pre-spike value in a short period of time. Particularly given that Aggravated Assault doesn't see any notable play outside of Commander, this demonstrates the extreme volatility of a market where extremely few copies exist. Keep an eye on Invocations with stagnant prices, especially those which see occasional Legacy, Modern, or Commander play. Vindicate, Loyal Retainers, and Slaughter Pact all fit this bill nicely, and I wouldn't be surprised to see one or all of these featured on next week's Market Index.

Aether Revolt is a set that continues to flounder. The only two cards that gained value this week are the cross-format staples, Walking Ballista and Fatal Push. In a move that's highly unusual for a modern set, the most expensive card (Ballista) is a rare and the third most expensive card (Push) is an uncommon. With the rare slot presenting so little value, and the draft format well in the rear-view mirror, fewer and fewer people choose to crack Aether Revolt packs, leading to increased demand of these cross-format cards even as everything else stagnates. Perhaps rotation can breathe new life into strategies that will cause this set to have an upswing, but for now, hold your Pushes and Ballistas and otherwise avoid the set if you can.

Kaladesh, in contrast to Aether Revolt, is thriving. The set actually gained a small amount of value over the past week, as Standard staples gain value. Chandra, Torch of Defiance is Mono-Red Aggro's preferred four-drop, and is picking up some of the slack Hazoret the Fervent is losing. Angel of Invention is a mainstay in the God-Pharaoh's Gift deck, which continues to put up some fringe results, leading to the Angel increasing even as the Gift itself declines. Cross-format fastlands, especially in Modern-popular color pairs - Blooming Marsh in Green-Black and Spirebluff Canal in Red-Blue - continue to go up as well. While the remaining shifts are ally fairly small, more cards are going up than down at this point, making the set a very attractive open with an EV comparable to Hour of Devastation.

Like Invocations, Inventions continue to do extremely well, going up almost across the board. Notable spikes include the Modern Affinity staple Mox Opal, which shot up almost thirty dollars, bypassing the Commander-favorites Sol Ring and Mana Crypt. Chalice of the Void, popular in both Legacy and Modern, likewise shot up $14, bypassing Crypt and coming within striking distance of Ring. Sword of Fire and Ice, Sword of Light and Shadow, Sword of War and Peace, and even Sword of Body and Mind continue to raise, though Sword of Feast and Famine is starting to come down from its previous highs. Gauntlet of Power is another notable gainer, gaining around $25 in the past week. Like Invocations, anything that's stagnating, but with cross-format demand looks to be at risk of a buyout, or at least a few pieces moving and driving up the price. Keep an eye on Steel Overseer, Ensnaring Bridge, Lotus Petal, Crucible of Worlds, Engineered Explosives, and Chrome Mox as potential spike targets. They've all lost value over the past month and seem primed to be snatched up by an intrepid speculator or a handful of Commander deck-blingers looking for a good score on shinies.

The threat of rotation looms over the Shadows over Innistrad block much like Emrakul, the Promised End did over Innistrad. Prices on even cross-format cards like Collective Brutality and Grim Flayer continue to depress, with the only gains being minor fluctuations on Spell Queller and Tree of Perdition. Without a Masterpiece series to prop up box price, the EV is considerably lower than that of the Kaladesh and Amonkhet blocks. Legacy and Modern players, look to pick up your Liliana, the Last Hope, Thalia, Heretic Cathar, Emrakul, Flayers, and Brutalities in the next few weeks as Standard players scramble to unload them, but everyone should avoid cracking these packs.

Shadows over Innistrad is faring even worse than Eldritch Moon is. With only Nahiri, the Habinger as a notable cross-format card, and her price tumbling week after week, the set doesn't have much to prop up its prices. Current and former Standard mainstays with minimal post-rotation potential like Archangel Avacyn and Relentless Dead are in freefall as well. Only two cards escaped this across-the-board decline: Jace, Unraveller of Secrets and Startled Awake. With neither having notable applications in Standard or any other format, it's likely casual appeal leading the pack on this one. Even still, these losses can't keep the set as a whole from dropping precipitously, leading to one of the lowest Standard-legal box EVs since Dragon's Maze.

Like Eldritch Moon, Oath of the Gatewatch is peppered with cross-format staples. Reality Smasher, Thought-Knot Seer, Kozilek, the Great Distortion, and Matter Reshaper are all popular in Eldrazi strategies in both Modern and Legacy, and Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet sees occasional play in Jund and Abzan Midrange lists in Modern as well. Unlike Eldritch Moon, however, these cards are not in freefall, and actually seem to be gaining ground, leaving the set's value relatively untouched, despite the pending rotation. The EV is still not great compared to Kaladesh and Amonkhet blocks, so I would recommend still avoiding cracking packs, but also don't expect to be able to swoop any rock-bottom deals on rotating Eldrazi, given the deck's popularity has made these cards more obvious in their eternal potential.

Battle for Zendikar has been plagued with EV problems since its release, and the pending rotation isn't doing it many favors, either. Gideon, Ally of Zendikar and Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger are still the only two cards worth more than a single pack's MSRP, and both continued to fall Drana, Liberator of Malakir continues to rise slightly in anticipation of Commander 2017's vampire deck, and the ever-casual-popular Void Winnower can't even be kept down. Prairie Stream also ticked up slightly, possibly because of its occasional Modern play in the Azorius Titan deck. But across the rest of the board, prices continue to drop, leaving box EV even lower than that of Shadows over Innistrad - even with Expeditions providing over $20 worth of EV per box! That means that the "average" box, one without an Expedition in it, is going to be worth less than $35. Unless you're a huge fan of lottery tickets, avoid packs from this set like the plague.

Overall Summary
Despite cards overall cooling, Standard-legal sets that aren't in imminent danger of rotation are doing well, especially Hour of Devastation and Kaladesh, which both have relatively high expected values for their boxes. These are further buoyed by Masterpiece-series buyouts that are spiking select cards from these sets with little or no provocation. While Standard is more or less "solved" and Ixalan's rotation looms on the horizon, cards from these sets are likely to stay fairly steady or decline slightly, while the Battle for Zendikar and Shadows over Innistrad blocks continue to erode. Expect the next few weeks to look a lot like this one, with few major shifts outside of the occasional Masterpiece spike.
