Welcome to The Magic Market Index. This article series documents the price changes of cards currently in print. This article will track how cards go from release to its time out of Standard, and as long as deemed necessary for non-Standard sets, as well as offer insight into what cards to invest in and what to ignore. The Magic market is a dangerous place, and this article is here to help guide players and speculators through the murky waters to greater returns.
This article will be updated once a week. Currently, this article series is tracking Battle for Zendikar Block (Oath of the Gatewatch, Battle for Zendikar, and Zendikar Expeditions), Shadows over Innistrad Block (Shadows over Innistrad and Eldritch Moon) and the Kaladesh Block (Kaladesh and Kaladesh Inventions). There are no current plans to track any promo sets, pack foils, or non-set releases. Otherwise, if it can be opened in a pack, it will be covered.

Since Kaladesh's release, prices have ebbed downward across the board. With only a small spike during the pro tour, Kaladesh dropped in price ten of its first twelve weeks, and the fall seemed relentless until now. For a second straight week, Kaladesh has posted net gains and proves that last week wasn't a mere fluke. With its booster box estimated value finally settling near its actual cost, we've stabilized in a safe location where it can rest for a while.
Chandra is one of the biggest pieces of Kaladesh's climb. She bottomed out in November of last year, and has been inching her way back up ever since. This past month has seen noteworthy gains, with a 15% increase pushing her back into last October's prices.
Now that Aether Revolt is fully spoiled, expect some cards to spike out of nowhere and others to fall in the coming weeks. As people evaluate the new set and its harmony with Kaladesh, movement will be seemingly random until a clearer picture is defined. The top cards of the set will remain strong, but hidden gems will emerge and previous selections will be replaced. Even cards on no one's radar, such as Pia Nalaar, could have a sudden spike due to their synergy with the new set and mechanics.
Editor's Note: Price data were collected before the meteoric increase in Saheeli Rai's price. It is this editor's belief that the hype is unsubstantiated and unlikely to perform to expectations. The proper response to the spike is to sell while the selling's good.

The anticipation and excitement for Aether Revolt's new Inventions is considerable. Our newest additions have already claimed the top two spots, and are currently averaging a full 40% higher then Kaladesh's half of the pie. This bodes well for their future. As Oath of the Gatewatch's half of Zendikar Expeditions is considerably undervalued compared to Battle for Zendikar's half, fears of a repeat or "small set syndrome" have been pleasantly abated. If current pricing is any indication, the second half of Kaladesh Inventions should standardize with the first.
Hype over these new additions will of course settle down. Even if trends continue upward during the preordering and prerelease, these prices are still well inflated. The average Aether Revolt invention should drop between $10 and $15 from where it is currently before it starts to settle into place, even if that's a month from now.
Preordering Aether Revolt Inventions right now for profit is like buying a future on a stock that's expected to go down. The vast majority who try will lose money, but the few who can see what others don't can make a strong profit. If you don't play the Magic stock market game, buy only what you want to play with, and only if you're okay with buying it at an inflated price. Otherwise, wait for prices to settle.
With Aether Revolt's attention-grabbing influx, Kaladesh's inventions have settled down. No week this month has seen more than a 1% change, and we've stayed within 2% over the past four weeks. If you've been waiting for the market to relax, now is most assuredly the time.
Overall, this Masterpiece set looks strong, and seems to have addressed the issues that Zendikar Expeditions brought with it. |

In a quite poetic trend, the Last Hope continues to fall as the Promised End grows. Liliana has hit her lowest price since she first skyrocketed the week after Eldritch Moon's release. Emrakul has hit her highest price since last September. Both trends look to continue for some time. With Aether Revolt's release, will Liliana finally be supplanted as the most expensive card in Standard?
Collective Brutality is continuing to see play through a variety of formats, which has lead to its ongoing ascent.
The remainder of the set saw very little movement. Its mythic weight remains sharp, as half of the rare slot value comes from the much scarcer mythic rare presence. Their power still gives Eldritch Moon the highest rare slot average in all Standard sets. |

Shadows over Innistrad is nothing if not reliable in its sluggish movement. Over the last three months, it's seen only a 3% decrease in set value.
Tireless Tracker is the largest exception. Since the reveal of Aether Revolt's improvise, he's been steadily rising. If the mechanic pans out with favor to green, expect Tireless Tracker to rise strong.
Nahiri, the Harbinger has been slowly inching her way back up this month, returning now to her mid-October price. Archangel Avacynhas spent the same time slowly inching downward. Nahiri sees small play outside of standard, while Avacyn's popularity is stagnant, if not slowly fading. |

Oath of the Gatewatch saw an amazing lack of change. The only refinement in the set's value and worth came from its portion of Expeditions.
As people look forward to Aether Revolt and even Amonkhet, Oath of the Gatewatch and Zendikar block are starting to be treated like forgotten relics of the past. A few cards may move with Aether Revolt's meta change, but they will be the minority. Where we stand now in Oath of the Gatewatch will be about where we stand a few months from now, with only a little more price decay as people start to sell out of the rotating sets. |

Battle for Zendikar remains the least performing set, with the smallest rare slot and booster box averages. Almost a third of the entire set's value comes from its two strongest mythics: Gideon, Ally of Zendikar and Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger. Half of Battle's booster box value comes from these two cards and any possible Expeditions.
To put this in a more drastic perspective, if you eliminate the Expeditions and two strong mythics, Battle for Zendikar beats out Homelands as having the lowest average card price. Battle for Zendikar has become the epitome of a haphazard hit-or-miss gamble. The majority of packs and boxes end in a negative net value. |

Ancient Tomb spiked sharply over the past few days, peaking as high as $140 before settling back down some. This spike is responsible for most of Oath of the Gatewatch's Expedition and box value growth. It's a Legacy staple and the upcoming Legacy GP undoubtedly provoked some sudden interest.
Fetchlands continue to be the strongest set of Expeditions, with all of them within the top thirteen cards of the set. Blue fetchlands, specifically, take four of the five top spots.
The tango lands remain the inverse, as the lowest performing lands within all Expeditions. The five tango lands are the bottom five cards for the third consecutive week.
Battle for Zendikar's portion remains dominant over Oath of the Gatewatch's portion. The discrepancy between their average price is overwhelming, with Battle for Zendikar sometimes nearing twice the average of Oath of the Gatewatch. |

Overall Summary
All eyes are upon Aether Revolt as the set list has been revealed. Already furious brainstorming, testing, and meta game analysis is brewing in all corners of the magic world. Just as Kaladesh has finally settled down and smoothed out, things are thrown into turmoil once more. The uncertainty and unpredictability has once again taken hold of standard, and will continue to shake things up for weeks to come. Those with a seer's eye can work out what cards will spike from Aether Revolt's presence. Foresee the new meta accurately, and you can a good profit from investing. If your predictions fail, though, so too will your investment. Trying to invest for the new meta is less risky than buying Battle for Zendikar boxes, but it's still a gamble. If you're interested in investing in this, be sure to scale your financial stake with your experience and confidence.
