The Magic Market Index: Set Review of Eldritch Moon

 

 

Eldritch Moon is coming out in two weeks and the prerelease is next weekend. This article will review all the cards in this set, although some cards will receive a "unplayable/Limited fodder" and move on. This is not meant as to a guide to what to play, but rather what cards will be in demand and worth it keep and/or go after.  However, cards will be said as to what they are good in and if they have a place in what format as playable cards tend to have more value and demand then unplayable cards.  

 

This set's prices are generally at their peaks at prereleases and release day, and values will go down as more product is opened. This is the same for every set before and most likely after. Only buy cards that are most likely going to go up or cards you need for day one of their release. Usually, it is best to wait until after the first two Star City Games events to determine what is really good.

 

For the list, the question of if "It is a good card?" is if it meets the following criteria: Is it playable in any constructed format?  Is the effect worth the man and other costs?  Is the effect unique and usable?  Does this have a deck it can go into?  Does it have potential to be good? 

The card answer yes to at least two, it is a good card. The question of "Will it increase or decrease in value?" goes by will the card most likely increase in value over time or immediately. A lot of cards will dip down as more enter the market, but some will go up because demand spikes hard. It is best to avoid buying into spikes unless it is for the older, lesser prices. Very rarely do the beginning spikes ever hold. There are exceptions, but it best to hold on. Comments give a view of the card and its potential or place. If there is a card that you want more of an explanation, feel free to ask about it.

Abundant Maw $0.24 No Decrease A lot of the emerge cards are quite good, but a few are not worth the effort. This is one of them.

Alchemist's Greeting $0.20 Yes Decrease  Hello to the first good card of the set on this list. Fiery Temper is completely better, but this is a fine card if you already have four and need another.
Assembled Alphas $0.43 Yes  Decrease This could be great in a budget or casual deck, but is not going to be a big player in any Constructed format.
Backwoods Survivalists $0.22 Yes  Decrease This is a fine common for delirium or Human decks. It will not make it in for high-end builds, but could be great for a budget version.
Bedlam Reveler $4.99 Yes Increase  This has a lot of potential in U/R Prowess decks. It could even see play in Modern.
Blessed Alliance $0.49 Yes Increase This is a very balanced and playable escalate card.
Blood Mist $0.24 No Decrease Do not ever play this card. Seriously.
Bloodbriar $0.20 Yes Increase This has potential in the B/G Rites deck as an alternative win condition.
Bloodhall Priest $1.67 No  Decrease If the B/R Vampire Madness deck every becomes tier one, this could go up. Otherwise, it is helping a weak deck in not the way it needs help.
Bold Impaler $0.20 No  Decrease This is horrible in any deck. It is not that bold of a statement.
Boon of Emrakul $0.20 No Decrease  Remember when Weakness was a tournament staple?  
Borrowed Grace $0.20 Yes  Decrease This replaces Fortify, a semi playable card.
Borrowed Hostility $0.22 No Decrease  The escalate cost is too much to make it worth it.
Borrowed Malevolence $0.15 Yes Increase This scales well and the escalate cost is fine. Both modes are fine.
Brazen Wolves $0.20 No Decrease Limited fodder is limited in potential.
Bruna, the Fading Light $2.18 Yes Increase  This card may not be a tournament all star, but it will be good in Commander decks for years to come.
Campaign of Vengeance $0.24 No Decrease This card tries so hard to be good, but these effects only work if on something that does something else.
Cathar's Shield $0.20 No Decrease In order for an equipment to be played, it needs to be powerful. This is not.
Cemetery Recruitment $0.15 Yes Decrease This is a solid Zombie support card that gets you two cards for two mana and no life. Black has to pay life for hat kind of advantage.
Certain Death $0.20 No Decrease Low-end removal in Limited rarely translates well into Constructed.
Chilling Grasp $0.21 No Decrease No. Just no.
Choking Restraints $0.20 No Decrease This is a good Limited card, but not anywhere else.
Clear Shot $0.24 Yes Decrease This has some potential, but most likely will not hit the mark.
Coax from the Blind Eternities $1.50 Yes Increase  This card is really powerful and will see play even outside of Standard.
Collective Brutality $2.41 Yes Increase This has combo potential written all over it.
Collective Defiance $2.21 Yes Increase This is a escalate spell to get behind. All three modes are solid and the escalate cost is cheap.
Collective Effort $4.48 Yes Increase  This will be great in the Tokens deck, and could easily be the best escalate card.
Conduit of Storms $3.99* No Decrease *This is not a correct market price. It will change to a correct price once more seller start selling.
Contingency Plan $0.17 No Decrease This effect has never made a splash in Standard when this effect is both in blue and you never do not get add a card to your hand.
Convolute $0.20 No Decrease  Spell Shrivel is a lot better.
Courageous Outrider  $0.28  Yes Increase This is good for the Humans deck.  
Crop Sigil $0.29 Yes Increase This is a solid delirium enabler and value card. It could see play.
Crossroads Consecrator $0.22 No  Decrease  This is almost unplayable in Limited.
Cryptbreaker $3.99  Yes Decrease The card is good, but not enough to make Zombies a good deck. The Zombie deck is way overrated, just like B/R Vampires were.
Cryptolith Fragment $0.38 No Decrease  This is borderline unplayable.
Cultist's Staff $0.20 No Decrease This is unplayable.
Curious Homunculus $0.44 Yes Increase This has a lot of potential and is really setting up for a powerful U/R Prowess deck.
Dark Salvation $1.42 Yes Increase If  there is a Zombie deck, this card card will be the reason. It is still good in any black deck.
Dawn Gryff $0.14 No  Decrease No.
Decimator of the Provinces $7.25 Yes Increase Favorable comparisons to Craterhoof Behemoth are a good sign the card is good. This will see play.
Deploy the Gatewatch $3.99 Yes Increase This will most likely see demand for planeswalker Commander decks but it could lead to an interesting planeswalker deck in Standard. 
Deranged Whelp $0.24 No  Decrease It is not a bad card, but is only going to see play in off the wall casual decks.
Desperate Sentry  $0.20 No  Decrease Interest in this card die long before this card will die on the battlefield.
Displace $0.23 Yes Decrease It is a good flicker card, but it will not most likely see play.
Distemper of the Blood $0.20 No  Decrease This is a fine card in the B/R Vampire Madness deck. And that deck is not doing well.
Distended Mindbender $2.07 Yes Increase This card is quite good and will only take time before people realize how good it is.
Docent of Perfection $1.23 Yes Increase  This is a card with a lot of potential to become a great and/or fun deck. Kind of a shame there is no reward for have all three versions of this card on the field yet.
Drag Under $0.20 No  Decrease No. There are a lot better bounce spells.
Drogskol Shieldmate $0.24 No Decrease  This is a weak effect, but not a horrible one. It is not going to make it in the Spirit deck.
Drownyard Behemoth  $0.24 No Decrease  Just not that great in Constructed.
Dusk Feaster $0.24 No Decrease  You can do better than playing this card.
Elder Deep-Fiend $5.43  Yes  Decrease Now this is an emerge creature. On a side note, anyone else read this as Eldrazi Deep-Friend?
Eldritch Evolution $9.91  Yes Decrease  There is a lot of buzz around this card, and while it may not perform to the high hopes for it, it is still a great card.
Emrakul's Evangel $0.75 Yes Increase This has a lot of combo potential, especially with B/G Rites.
Emrakul's Influence $0.23 No Decrease This feels like it should be good, but these card have rarely seen competitive play.
Emrakul, the Promised End $17.27  Yes Decrease  This will be a $10 mythic. She is not like her previous version and this is inferior to Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger.
Enlightened Maniac $0.20 No Decrease There is some merit to this in a flicker deck like the old Blade Splicer, but there is no Restoration Angel this time.
Eternal Scourge $1.49 Yes Increase This is good with Food Chain and could still be playable in Standard or any Eldrazi deck.
Extricator of Sin $0.24 Yes Increase The front side is okay but its flip side is a power house in that is gives Eldrazi vigilance.
Exultant Cultist $0.20 No Decrease This is bad.  
Faith Unbroken $0.24 Yes Decrease  This card has potential, but not in Standard. This might see play in the sideboards of Bogles in Modern.
Faithbearer Paladin $0.20 No Decrease Creatures like this never make it to Standard. or any Constructed format.
Falkenrath Reaver $0.14 No Decrease A 2/2 for two with no effect is never going to make an impact even if it the first time it has happened.
Field Creeper $0.22 No Decrease The only thing less playable than a 2/2 for two with no effect is a 2/1 with no effect.
Fiend Binder $0.22 No Decrease If this was a three-mana creature with everything the same, it might see play, but not for four mana.
Fogwalker $0.22  Yes Decrease This could see play in Company or Spirits decks.
Fortune's Favor $0.25  Yes Increase This is the best version of Fact or Fiction printed so far and it could see play. It has so much potential.
Foul Emissary $0.37  Yes increase This has a lot of potential for some great play.
Furyblade Vampire $0.29 No Decrease Please never play this.
Galvanic Bombardment $0.18  Yes Increase This will be the replace for Fiery Impulse. It scales better when you play the third and fourth copy. 
Gavony Unhallowed $0.22 Yes Increase This has potential in the B/G Rites deck as an alternative win condition, although not as good as the cheaper Bloodbriar.
Geier Reach Sanitarium $1.79  Yes Increase It is a cheap alternate Mikokoro, Center of the Sea for Commander players.
Geist of the Archives $0.24 No Decrease This card is bad, and almost never see play in anything outside of the most defensive blue deck.
Geist of the Lonely Vigil $0.24 Yes Increase  This gives U/W Spirits and non-G/W decks a solid creature that can stand against aggro. 
Geist-Fueled Scarecrow  $0.24 No  Decrease Cards like these never make it to Constructed play. It is the not the worst offender of this type of drawback, it is still bad enough to not warrant it.
Gisa and Geralf $4.97  Yes Increase This is a solid creature but it does little to help the Zombie deck be great. It is nice to cast Zombies from the graveyard, but it dies to a lot of removal and this card needs to be on the field in order to get the full effect of it. Also, since it is not a Zombie, it does not help with the other Zombie synergies, although there are way to change that. Overall, it will be in demand so it is worth getting them.
Gisela, the Broken Blade
$27.99  Yes Decrease Gisela will go down, but she is not a bad card.  She is a solid white creature suffering from the new set hype.
Give No Ground $0.24 No Increase Give this card no place in your deck. For four mana, it should do more than give a small increase in attack and block any number of creatures.  
Gnarlwood Dryad $0.44 Yes Increase  This has potential to fit into Modern Zoo, especially if the deck can get delirium quickly and easily.
Graf Harvest $0.24 Yes Decrease The market on this card will not be there. It fits into a narrow deck but is a quite solid card.
Graf Rats $0.14 No Decrease This is unplayable outside of melding, and the flip side is not that amazing.
Grapple with the Past  $0.17 Yes Increase This is one of the best Regrowth card printed. Being restricted to lands and creatures is a sad drawback but being instant is nice.
Grim Flayer $12.75 Yes Decrease This card will make the B/G Delirium a thing. That said, that deck will not be strong based on the current card pool.
Grizzled Angler $0.23 No  Decrease This fisherman will not make a splash. It can be cute for Limited, but it will not be alluring to Constructed.
Guardian of PIlgrims $0.22 No Decrease This is a decent effect, but not good to make it into the U/W Spirits deck.
Hamlet Captain $0.24  Yes Increase This card will go ham in the Human decks. 
Hanweir Battlements $2.54 Yes Increase This is a solid creature in any aggressive deck even without its meld ability.
Hanweir Garrison $3.70 Yes Increase This is a solid land even without the meld ability. The ability to give a creature haste for a red mana and tapping this land is solid.
Harmless Offering $1.63 Yes Increase Kitty! What could be wrong getting such a sweet kitty? If you get this card, do not pass up on it. It is quite good, even if it is not actually harmless.
Haunted Dead $0.22 No Decrease Never put this in a Constructed deck, ever.
Heron's Grace Champion $1.96 Yes Increase This is a great human and will help make that deck better.
Identity Thief $0.49  Yes Decrease The effect is good and really interesting, but it doubtful it will make an impact at all in Standard, although it can definitely be good in Commander.
Impetuous Devils $0.97 No Decrease A Ball Lightning that can act as a removal spell is decent but rare makes a mark on Standard. Being two red instead of three might make it easier to play.
Imprisoned in the Moon
$3.09 Yes  Decrease This is a great blue card that will do well, but it is usually paired with other colors in deck that generally have better removal for those things that this card deals with.
Incendiary Flow $0.75 Yes Increase Welcome, sorcery-speed Incinerate
Ingenious Skaab $0.23  Yes  Decrease This is another solid card for the U/R Prowess deck.
Insatiable Gorgers $0.24 No Decrease More expensive madness vampires is not what the Vampire deck needed.
Ironclad Slayer $0.22 Yes  Decrease This is a great card, but not in competitive Magic. It could find some play since it is a 3/2 for three mana.
Ironwright's Cleansing $0.22 No Decrease They should just reprint Disenchant.
Ishkanah, Grafwidow $2.99 Yes Increase This is a Commander general, and that means that Commander players will want it, especially a foil version of it.
It of the Horrid Swarm
$0.22 No Decrease The only home this will find is the bulk common piles.
Kessig Prowler $0.28 No Decrease  If the Werewolf deck needs a one-drop, there are better choices.
Laboratory Brute $0.22 No Decrease These cards never see serious Constructed play and this is no exception.
Lashweed Lurker $0.25 Yes Increase This is a great emerge creature and fine as a eight-drop. It could see play in Modern Tron.  
Liliana's Elite $0.39 Yes Decrease The elite have a chance at playing well in a self-mill deck.
Liliana, the Last Hope  $23.63  Yes  Decrease First off, she is not Liliana of the Veil. She is a strong three-mana planeswalker. She is removal and graveyard retrieval with the potential of a game ending ultimate. She will not dominate Standard or warp other formats, but she is not a bad card. That said, she will drop in price since her current value is due to new set hype and she does not have a home yet.
Lone Rider $0.50 Yes Increase This has potential to be quite strong in Human decks, just like several werewolves that appear in some version of Humans.
Long Road Home $0.24 Yes Decrease Instead of an Otherworldly Journey, one takes the long road home. Seems about time they made a version of this card that was not an Arcane spell.
Lunar Force $0.24 Yes Increase When a card is consider for Vintage, it is a good card. This is going to have the most request for alters to something to do with the anime Sailor Moon.
Lunarch Mantle $0.22 No Decrease This will see no play. 
Lupine Prototype $2.15  Yes Increase This is waiting for either a hellbent or discard deck to make this into something.
Make Mischief $0.22 No Decrease Thee mana for one damage and a 1/1 creature that deals one damage is not the worst, but this will be in any decks outside of the word U/R Prowess deck.
Markov Crusader $0.24 No Decrease The Vampire deck did not need another decent but expensive creature.
Mausoleum Wanderer $3.61 Yes Increase Spirits are slowly becoming the Merfolk of Standard, which is not a bad thing. This is one of the top rares of the set and will go up.
Mercurial Geists $0.24 Yes Increase Another "prowess" creature that has built-in evasion.
Midnight Scavengers $0.14 No Decrease Scavenging for times this a good card are taking up too much time. This is simply not good and not worth for the meld ability.
Mind's Dilation $2.25 No Decrease  The casual and Commander mythic that changes how the game functions. A decent but overcosted card for competitive play.
Mirrorwing Dragon $4.47 Yes Decrease This is a great five-mana dragon with a nice take on "target one, target all" effect.
Mockery of Nature $0.24 No Decrease World Breaker is generally better than this, so it is a cheap replacement for that card.
Mournwillow $0.24  Yes Decrease If there is an aggressive delirium deck, this belongs there and may be made it worth it.
Murder $0.49 Yes Increase Ruinous Path is better than this, but it is nice to have the option of reliable instant removal.
Nahiri's Wrath $4.99 Yes  Decrease A good red removal spell. This would have been too powerful if it hit players.  It will see some play, but not enough to keep it worth much.
Nebelgast Herald $0.26 No Decrease  A decent effect and everything, but not good for Constructed play.
Nephalia Academy $0.39 Yes Increase An interesting effect, but time will tell if it is good.  
Niblis of Frost $0.75 Yes Increase This will help make the U/W Spirit deck into a counterspell deck and thus a solid deck.
Noose Constrictor $0.49 Yes Decrease Wild Mongrel has been remade, but it is doubtful it will be as good.
Noosegraf Mob $0.46 No Decrease  A cute rare that is not worth what ti does. 
Oath of Liliana $1.99 Yes Increase The black Oath will be the second best one, with the green one still being the best.
Olivia's Dragoon $0.22 No Decrease A 2/2 for two in black with upside is solid, but the Vampire deck was not looking for another enabler.
Otherworldly Outburst  $0.22 Yes  Increase This is great for trading and then leaving behind a 3/2 creature behind. This will see play.
Peace of Mind $0.24 No Decrease White is not generally in the business of discarding and the other madness colors have better ways to discard.
Permeating Mass $1.61 Yes Increase  This is one of the best cards in the set, flavor-wise. Give this first strike and the game just became funny. 
Prey Upon $0.16 Yes Increase  This will see some play after Dromoka's Command rotates out of Standard.
Primal Druid $0.22 Yes Decrease This is a nice little roadblock that helps ramp.  
Prophetic Ravings $0.22 Yes Increase A combo deck will appear from this deck in some format.
Providence $0.55 No Decrease While the effect is neat, lifegain-only spell rarely see play. Lifegain effect do see play if they are attached to something good like Lightning Helix or Sphinx's Revelation, or if they simply generate a ton of life like Feed the Clan.
Prying Questions $0.24 No Decrease This is an interesting effect that will not be worth it in most games.
Repel the Abominable $0.24 Yes Increase This is might see play in sideboard against non-Human decks.
Ride Down $0.24 Yes Increase W/r Humans will love this card.
Rise from the Grave $0.24 No Decrease Other similar cards have not made an impact. This one will be no different.
Ruthless Disposal $0.24 No Decrease Straight to the bulk uncommon section.
Sanctifier of Souls $0.49 No Decrease Interesting effect, but not worth it for Constructed.
Savage Alliance $0.28  Yes Increase This red escalate card is really powerful and will see play.
Scour the Laboratory  $0.24 No Decrease Card drawing is good, but the reduced cost is not worth playing this card.
Selfless Spirit $2.66  Yes Increase This is a solid two-mana spirit in any deck that can play it. It might see sideboard play in Modern for several decks.
Shreds of Sanity $0.29 No Decrease This card is a gamble as to whether it will get to keep what you wanted to get.
Shrill Howler $0.24 No Decrease  This is not worth trying to make good or sell.
Sigarda's Aid $4.58 Yes Increase This is the enchantment and equipment support players were looking for. This will be a card worth its value for many years to come.
Sigardian Priest $0.16 No Decrease  Limited fodder has limited appeal.
Skirsdag Supplicant $0.22 No Decrease   This is not worth trying to make good.
Slayer's Cleaver $3.99* No Decrease  This is bad even for equipment. Most of the time, you do not want your creatures blocked by Eldrazi. Also, the price is not correct, as it is only held by one seller.
Smoldering Werewolf $0.24 Yes Decrease  This is good, but needs a good Werewolf or red aggro deck to be in demand.
Somberwald Stag $0.24 No  Decrease  The effect is good, but the card itself is not.
Soul Separator $0.69  Yes Increase This card is going to be a Commander card, and someone will try to break it in Constructed.
Spectral Reserves $0.22 No Decrease While it is nice that they tried to make a card as good as Lingering Souls, this falls quite short on that ambition.
Spell Queller $8.99  Yes Increase This is one of the best cards for the U/W Spirits deck, and one of the best cards in the set period, thus worth going after.
Spirit of the Hunt $1.03 No Decrease This is solid in the Werewolf deck that is still out hinting for a place in Standard.
Splendid Reclamation $7.46 Yes Increase This has "exploit me" written all over it. This will be a card for almost every green Commander deck.
Spontaneous Mutation $0.22 No Decrease This is cute card in Limited, but not in Constructed.
Spreading Flames $0.24 No Decrease

 This is a good card, even for Constructed, but it costs too much and is not that impactful versus other cards that you can put in your deck.

Springsage Ritual $0.22 No Decrease Naturalize is still better.
Steadfast Cathar $0.22 No Decrease  This is steadfastly going nowhere in Constructed.
Stensia Banquet $0.22 No Decrease  This is a card Vampire decks can feast on. It is removal and a draw spell. Or would if it hit creatures. Another card that falls short of being playable.
Stensia Innkeeper $0.22 Yes Increase With a repeatable flicker, this can lock an opponent out of a critical land.
Stitcher's Graft $0.61 No Decrease This might find some use in very aggressive decks or with creatures with vigilance, but for the most part, this will be overlooked.
Strange Augmentation $0.22 No Decrease This enchantment aura might see play in some aggressive delirium decks.
Stromkirk Condemned $2.17  Yes Increase This is a madness enabler the Vampire deck can stink its teeth into. The double black is not great, but it is worth trying out.
Stromkirk Occultist $1.53 Yes Increase This is another madness card the Vampire deck is going to love. It is pseudo card drawing on a 3/2 body for 1R via madness. And at three mana, it is still reasonable to cast.
Subjugator Angel $0.24 Yes Decrease This will see play in some flicker-based and Commander decks.
Succumb to Temptation $0.22  Yes Increase

There are three good black card draw spells in Standard. It all depends on whether you want instant speed, to control the amount, or want to scry two.

Summary Dismissal $0.99 Yes Increase This is the counterspell players who hate Eldrazi spells were waiting for.
Swift Spinner $0.22 No  Decrease Please do not run this card.
Take Inventory $0.24 Yes Decrease A decent draw spell in Standard, if you run multiple copies. Usually not worth it.
Tamiyo, Field Researcher $24.90 Yes Decrease  All planeswalkers drop, and this one will be no different. This will most likely be the new "Sarkhan Unbroken," meaning it is a powerful card that never sees play. This is in a better color combination and the effects are individually extremely powerful, so it might be worth trying her out.
Tangleclaw Werewolf $0.24 No Decrease  Not worth the effect for the cost and stars.
Tattered Haunter  $0.22 No Decrease Another Limited card that has no place in a Constructed deck.
Terrarion $0.22  Yes  Decrease A solid card that will not see any play outside of some weird multiple four plus or more color decks.
Thalia's Lancers $0.99 Yes  Increase This ccard will see play in several Commander decks.  
Thalia, Heretic Cathar $8.44 Yes Increase This is probably one of the best rares out of the set and maybe the block. This will see play in Modern and older formats. Keep copies of this and go after more.
Thermo-Alchemist $0.16 Yes Increase This will see play in the U/R Prowess deck and most likely in some Pauper decks.
Thirsting Axe $0.24 No Decrease Do not drink from the well that says this is a good card.
Thraben Foulbloods $0.22 No Decrease This has fine stats and a decent delirium effect, so if the delirium deck takes off, it might run this.

$0.22 no Decrease  Discarding a card to get a 1/1 human feels weak and not worth it.
Tree of Perdition $4.93  Yes Increase This has a lot of combo potential and is a cool effect that can see play in Commander.
Turn Aside $0.14 No Decrease  Turn aside from this bad counterspell.  
Ulrich of the Krallenhorde $5.39 No Decrease Wizards gave us the legendary werewolf we wanted, and he is not that decent in the werewolf deck. There will be some backlash on this card, but some player will be the purist and want him because he is the legendary werewolf. Be sure to have a copy for those players.
Ulvenwald Captive $0.16 No Decrease This is a decent ramp creature, but not being able to attack and having weak stats makes him not worth it. His transformed side is a slightly better Kozilek's Channeler.
Ulvenwald Observer $0.45 No Decrease This might see some play in a Commander deck that can get high-toughness creatures to die. Otherwise, it still be observing games instead of playing in them.
Unsubstantiate $0.85 Yes Increase This is the best uncommon in the set and probably one of the best bounce spells printed.
Vampire Cutthroat $0.24 No Decrease This is not a horrible card, but the Vampire deck does not have a spot for it.
Vexing Scuttler $0.24 No Decrease  Emerging from the Eldrazi spells is a good effect. Returning an instant or sorcery in blue is usually good.
Vildin-Pack Outcast $0.14 No Decrease The effect for this five-drop is not worth it for Constructed.
Voldaren Pariah $0.86 No Decrease Limited-only card.  
Wailing Ghoul $0.14  Yes Decrease These cards almost never see serious Constructed play and this is the exception. A 1/3 for two mana is good, and it is in black, not blue. It is a good blocker that does not enter the battlefield tapped.
Waxing Moon $0.22 Yes Decrease Good in Standard to transform werewolves, but this is no Moonmist.
Weaver of Lightning $0.24 No Decrease This card is not good in the deck it should be in.
Weirded Vampire $0.22 No  Decrease A decent madness Vampire, but that is not what the Vampire deck needs.
Wharf Infiltrator $1.10  Yes  Decrease This is a good skulking creature. It is not going to break blue, but it gives it a good creature. If you can trigger the 3/2 Eldrazi token, then that is just gravy.
Whispers of Emrakul $0.48 Yes Increase This a great flavor card and an even better effect. Hymn to Tourach for 1B instead of BB is great. This might see Modern play.
Wolfkin Bond $0.17 No  Decrease It is a nice enchantment, but that is all it is.
Woodcutter's Grit $0.22 No  Decrease  The cost is too high for the effect to be good in the decks that want this effect.
Woodland Patrol $0.22  Yes Decrease This is a fine card if you do not have better cards than it.
Wretched Gryff $0.16 No Decrease This has a small chance of seeing Constructed play, but not likely.

 

 

 

 

Overall Summary

 

 

So the set has fully spoiled. No more investigating and looking for clues. The secrets are out in the open. So, for the set, how was it? Overall, it looks like a solid set. A lot of rares and mythics are playable and not terribly expensive at the outset. A lot of commons and uncommons are playable, if not great. There is chaff in the set, but that is to be expected of every set. The chaff is limited in this and mostly for.... Limited.

 

Limited looks like it will be fun, but that will be determined by the prerelease. The flavor and artwork are spot on. Even though it is another Eldrazi-based set, it does not feel like Zendikar, rather an Innistrad-flavored Eldrazi, not Eldrazi with some horror aspect  Hopefully, Wizards will not be revisiting the Eldrazi any time soon.

 

There are some serious negatives about the set, but not enough to ruin it. The legendary werewolf players have wanted is barely playable in Werewolf tribal Commander decks. There are better G/R generals for werewolves. The other big issue is the lack of any meaningful reprints in this set, or in Shadows over Innistrad block at all. Snapcaster Mage and Liliana of the Veil were not likely to be reprinted due to the former not fitting mechanically in the set and the latter being too powerful. However, why were some cards not brought back from original Innistrad like Gravecrawler, the tribal lords from Dark Ascension, Cavern of Souls, or a Modern staple like Blood Moon or Horizon Canopy? Instead, we got Murder, Convolute, and Turn Aside. Wizards might not like reprinting valuable cards anymore, but players need those reprints in order to keep older formats and Commander affordable.

 

This block set the bar back up after Battle for Zendikar dropped it hard. This will build upon what Shadows over Innistrad started and maybe breathe life into the embers of some old decks that feel by the wayside, like Zombies, B/R Vampires, Burn, U/R Prowess, and R/G Werewolves. Existing decks like the Humans deck gain a good amount of support, but nothing degenerate. Humans can go in multiple directions, which is good. U/W Spirit Control looks viable, and there could be a planeswalker deck in Standard. Modern and other formats got some new toys to help existing decks.
