Welcome to the Magic Market Index. This article series documents the price changes of cards currently in print. This article will track how cards go from release to its time out of Standard, and as long as deemed necessary for non-Standard sets, as well as offer insight into what cards to invest in and what to ignore. The Magic market is a dangerous place, and this article is here to help guide players and speculators through the murky waters to greater returns.
This article will be updated once a week on Thursday. Currently, this article series is tracking Eternal Masters, Dragons of Tarkir, Magic Origins, Battle for Zendikar Block (Oath of the Gatewatch, Battle for Zendikar, Zendikar Expeditions) and Shadows over Innistrad. There are no current plans to track any promo sets, pack foils, or non-set releases. Otherwise, if it can be opened in a pack, it will be covered.
Card prices are picked on Thursday morning from TCGplayer mid price, the price used by many for trading cards for cards. Going by the selling price involves whether to go by Ebay, TCGplayer low, Star City Games, or another vendor. It is just simpler and cleaner to go by the trade value of TCGplayer mid. Comments about cards are the opinions of the author, and should not be taken as facts or divine intervention. That said, comments and predictions are based on data and experience, not on idle speculation or an attempt to move certain cards. Cards that are worth $2.00 USD or more will be on the list. If a card is worth $1.99 or less, it will not appear on the list even if it was on the previous week.

Overall Summary
The state of the Magic market is fine. It is losing value, but not enough to believe it is unhealthy.
Eternal Masters' higher value cards are going up, which is most likely because they're the ones people actually want. The sad thing is the packs are so expensive and the chance of opening a rare or mythic worth more a pack at MSRP is low at about 24%. Approximately three out of four packs will lose value even under the best case. The real value is in the foils, which can be worth a lot, but that's reliant on randomness. A box of Eternal Masters is basically a complete gamble. You could walk away with a lot of value, but most likely you will get around $200 in value. It is better to buy the singles you need, but the allure is likely too great for many people.
Eldritch Moon spoilers have started and the two mythics so far are fine, but not game breaking. The three rares are amazing, though. The new Thalia is very strong and could be played in older formats. It also looks promising for the Humans deck. The "Eldrazi Wish" is going to make blue-based Eldrazi quite strong. The half of the Hanweir card we've seen looks powerful, but it remains to be seen what triggers it and what's on the front. All of those rares are exciting and will be on the top list of what people want for the set. The set is starting off strong and that bodes well for preorders. That also gives hope that the Shadows over Innistrad block will be a great block to recover from the previously weak Battle for Zendikar.
Standard still seems to be dominated by white. Whether it is W/x Humans, B/W Control, Bant Company, or G/W Tokens, white is the color of Standard. Stock up on the notable white cards like Declaration in Stone, Gideon, Thalia's Lieutenant, and Archangel Avacyn, as well as the lower end cards like Stasis Snare and Linvala.
It is best to hold off from buying packs of any set out right now and wait for Eldritch Moon to come out. If you are wanting to buy packs of a Standard set, buyOath of the Gatewatch for Standard interests or Dragons of Tarkir for long-term value.

Thalia's Lieutenant: Well, it went down. That is surprising.

Gideon, Ally of Zendikar: This has been stagnant for too long. It should go up soon.
Oath of Nissa: This is seeing more and more play. It should see an uptick in value.

Anything on this list that has a lot of value. Values are generally going to go down further before they have any chance of coming back up, especially with Eternal Masters.
Well, that turned out wrong for Eternal Masters since they went up almost across the board. All the other high-end cards from Standard went down or stayed the same.
This week:
Kytheon, Hero of Akros: It may go up a little, but unless you need the card for a deck, avoid it.
