Welcome to the Magic Market Index. This article series documents the price changes of cards currently in print. This article will track how cards go from release to its time out of Standard, and as long as deemed necessary for non-Standard sets, as well as offer insight into what cards to invest in and what to ignore. The Magic market is a dangerous place, and this article is here to help guide players and speculators through the murky waters to greater returns.
This article will be updated once a week on Thursdays. Currently, this article series is tracking Dragons of Tarkir, Magic Origins, Battle for Zendikar Block (Oath of the Gatewatch, Battle for Zendikar, Zendikar Expeditions) and Shadows Over Innistrad. There are no current plans to track any promo sets or other non-set releases. If it can be opened in a pack, it will be covered.

Expeditions are worth money. Water is also wet. Also, the sky is blue.
Expeditions are the single worst pack-related idea to come out of Wizards since Chronicles. The concept was fine, but making it on average being one in three boxes made it feel like too much of a lottery, and a lot of people bought boxes hoping to make their money back, which ruined the weak set of Battle of Zendikar's value. If Battle for Zendikar had been a stronger set, or the Expeditions were about one in every box, the set wouldn't have tanked so hard. When you look at Oath of the Gatewatch, that set was strong and had weak Expeditions for the most part. Battle for Zendikar was a weak set with strong Expeditions.
All in all, the Expeditions were implemented very poorly in a weak set, and this carried significant price implications both for them and for Battle for Zendikar block. |

Overall Summary
Pro Tour Shadows over Innistrad really shook the market up. Eight different decks were in the top eight, and several other decks did well. A diversified field means a better market since more cards are wanted, and not everyone is after the same few cards. This also means that the format is still brewing and has not been completely solved which means there is still room for cards to grow and new cards to gain value. Bant CoCo is still the number one most consistent deck, so staples of that card are only going to go up, as seen in Lumbering Falls. The other decks are all good, just Bant CoCo is the most consistent.
A lot of cards recently spiked, and when any card spikes, only go after them if you need them. Otherwise, it is best to wait a few days to see where the spike goes. Usually, the spikes go down, although a few times the spike goes up. Generally, wait until the next major event to see if the card is play or played against to see whether to go after it. On average, you'll save more money on the spikes that go down than you lose on the spikes that go up.
Right now, Magic Origins is the set to buy packs or a box out of for pure value. There are lot of high-value cards in the set, and a lot of the cards are very good even outside of Standard. Dragons of Tarkir is the best long-term set to buy packs or a box of. A lot of the rares and mythic rares see play in many other formats outside of Standard. Oath of the Gatewatch and Shadows over Innistrad are solid sets to buy into, although the other sets are better, unless you want to open new cards, for which Shadows over Innistrad is the best for Standard due to it has the longest time in Standard of the current sets. Avoid Battle for Zendikar packs and boxes unless you either want to throw away money or feel very lucky about opening a good Expedition.
Cards to Watch
Prevuiously, these were predicted to spike:
Languish: This is now an $8 card. Hopefully you got your copies before the spike.
Lumbering Falls: This card shot up fifty cents. It is likely to move up further.
Always Watching: Went up a little, and will probably climb up for a while. Doubtful it'll spike hard unless Humans or another deck puts up a high-profile finish.
Reflector Mage: This has gone to $1.89, so it on its way to the Index.
This week:
Bygone Bishop: This is a solid card that is overshadowed right now.
Caves of Koilos: This will continue to go up.
Crush of Tentacles: This is ripe for abuse and is a good target for investment.
Dromoka's Command: This is one of the best cards in Standard and one of the most sought-after despite being cheap.
Eldrazi Displacer: This is going to be a great long-term investment card. If anyone can do something broken with this card, it will spike hard.
Lantern Scout: This is seeing more and more play, and is one of the best Allies in the block.
Llanowar Wastes: This will go up as the G/B deck does well in Standard.
Lumbering Falls: This will continue to go up.
Nissa, Voice of Zendikar: This is poised to go up to $20.
Ruinous Path: This card is starting to see play in black decks, and it should be. It's a Hero's Downfall that doubles as a finisher.
Cards to Avoid
Previously, these were predicted to fall:
Archangel Avacyn: She went down, but not a lot in relative to her price. She has seen her highest point for a while.
Arlinn Kord: She continues her free-fall, and it does not look like she is going up anytime soon.
Westvale Abbey: This went up due to the rise in the Top 8 decks running it. It was surprising, but it is doubtful it will reach its prerelease price again. Around $10-12 seems to be about where it would be expect it to settle.
This week
Season's Past: The deck is good, but it is not proven yet. Never buy into the spike for investment reasons.
Drana, Liberator of Malakir: This card will fall a lot, probably down to under $10.
Archangel Avacyn: She is going to settle somewhere around $36.00 as long as she keeps her current demand. If she sees play in another new deck, she will stop falling as much. She will continue to drop as the supply is going up.
Hissing Quagmire: This is solid, but do not buy into the spike.

Posted Apr 29, 2016It must have gone up past the 2.00 mark since I collected the data. I am not surprised it is at that. It is the best uncommon out of Shadows over Innistrad. My comments on it would be that is the best uncommon in the set and better than a lot of rares and some mythics. Definitely keep all you get and keep some in trade stock.

Posted Apr 29, 2016Shambling Vents could definitely hold, but I do not expect much of the Battle lands in Modern. The Shadow lands could be good as a one or two of, but I doubt there will be needed as a four of, outside of budget considerations.

Posted Apr 29, 2016The fact either of the new dual lands come into play untapped is a strong mark in support of them may be seeing Modern play. Right now, it is not a bad idea to get those lands if you need for Standard or for that Modern deck.
