San Diego Comic Con Spoiler Digest

Spoiler Digest

Every year at San Diego Comic Con, Wizards of the Coast hosts a panel where they talk about all of Magic's exciting products coming out for the rest of the year. This year, we got a first look at Khans of Tarkir, From the Vault: Annihilation, Duel Decks Anthology, Duel Decks: Speed vs Cunning, and Commander 2014.

Khans of Tarkir Block
  • The Khans of Tarkir Block will be Large/Small/Large
  • Unlike previous Large/Small/Large blocks, the Spring set will not be drafted on its own. Instead, the Winter set will be drafted with both Khans of Tarkir and with the Spring set. The three draft formats will be: 1) Khans/Khans/Khans, 2) "Dewey"/Khans/Khans, 3) "Louie"/"Louie"/ "Dewey". This is the "Unique Block Structure" that Mark Rosewater had promised.
  • The block is built bottom-up around this unique draft structure.
  • The story of Khans of Tarkir block involves time travel
  • Khans of Tarkir itself is a Wedge set. Mark Rosewater affectionately refers to it as "Bizarralara". However, the block itself is not based on the Wedges, as the time travel story necessitates change.
  • Tarkir is a plane that used to be inhabited by dragons. The Khans of the warring clans drove the dragons into extinction.
  • There are five warring clans on Tarkir. Each clan has its own Wedge. Each clan worships an aspect of the dragons. Each clan has a Khan, a legendary creature in its three colors. Each clan has its own mechanic.
  • Each clan is focused on one color. This color is not the "center" of the Clan's Wedge. For example, the WBG clan (which is black paired with its two enemy colors) is focused on white.
  • Morph is a returning mechanic.
  • Morph is not the only returning mechanic.
  • Sarkhan is returning. Tarkir is his home plane.
  • The Prerelease will work slightly differently from previous Prereleases. You will still pick a faction - one of the Clans - but instead of one set Prerelease Promo per faction, each of the eight possible rares in the seeded faction pack for each Clan will be foil and stamped with the Prerelease date. The Khan of the Clan will be one of the possible Prerelease rares.
